Sometimes people get into a pattern of not having sex and it becomes difficult to break that pattern, on both ends. If you stop hanging out with a friend for a while, it becomes awkward the next time you see them, so you may end up avoiding them... people don't want to feel uncomfortable, and sometimes it's more comfortable to ignore a problem than to deal with it.

'Dead bedrooms' are a broad spectrum of bedrooms, some of which may look like the bedroom you describe, but some of which are dead because someone just had a baby or a surgery or started working 12-hour days, and some are dead because of the inertia generated by this kind of event, and some are dead because someone's cheating, and some are dead because someone's lost attraction but won't admit it.
