The NFL kicker Josh Brown has admitted that he has physically, verbally and emotionally abused his wife.

I will assume for the sake of argument that we all think physical abuse is wrong.

You may be aware that women who are emotionally and verbally abused often do not leave that man. Quite frequently their self-esteem is decimated by this process and this plays a part in their unwillingness to leave him.

So therefore:

(i) is it not acceptable and even logical to abuse your wife verbally and emotionally if it means that she'll stay with you?

(ii) is there any argument against verbally and emotionally abusing your wife if it 'works'?

(iii) if there is a distinction between verbal abuse, manipulation and acceptable conduct, could you explain the difference between the three? Or are they all the same?
