Cleaning is never fun

I enjoy cleaning quite a bit. It's satisfying.

Farming leads to sedentary high-density living, making for a dirtier and more infectious environment, and putting farmers more on their guard for tidying up and napalming household surfaces.

I actually found that the city accumulated more dust, and gross air. It's almost like the gross dirtiness settled more heavily in the city.

I couldn't relate to this article in any way. In fact, I felt like it was written by someone looking into the world of cooking and cleaning and coming up with assumptions. I wonder if that's because of my culture?

[–]Sunhappy_DC 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

I think it's western-centric. In my experience, his assumptions were reverse: I'd say pastoral culture is less about cooking where my parents are from and more about cleaning and empty spaces. Meanwhile my parents' tribes are agricultural and love cooking and shared meals like fufu and large family rice bowls.

I also observed that women in my culture who like more to clean are not as submissive naturally as their cooking counterparts. Cleaning is pretty straightforward, whereas when you cook for your husband or guests, it's with their preferences in mind. If that makes sense. You clean to your liking. You cook to theirs.

This is just from my cultural bias, igbo/Efik. FYI yall.

Great blog find Camille

It's cool how even if the location details are different, the cooking vs cleaning model is pretty similar, with cookers being more feminine than cleaners! And thanks glad you enjoyed it, I've been going through the archives, there are a lot more posts to discuss in the future :)

Edit: As I've said elsewhere in this post, I've changed my mind I don't think it's about femininity vs masculinity I think both cookers and cleaners are exhibiting different clusters of female traits, some more desirable than others.

[–]SuperSlavisWife 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Viewed as two sets of personalities (not inherently completely linked to cooking or cleaning], it makes a little more sense. Some people want to nurture, others to protect. Nurturers will be more creative, softer, desperate to produce. Protectors will be more defensive, harsher, on the lookout for the good and the bad.

That said, my cyclothymia throws me a lot between the two. One day/hour/minute I will be full of energy, happy with everyone and eager to feed and care for those around me. Another my energy crashes and I feel guilty I can't look after anyone so I retreat into art to feel productive. Another I am full of energy, angry and frustrated at myself for my clumsiness, constantly cleaning and tidying. Another my energy crashes again and I just go to bed early and lie in late to try and recover. But that the split still exists in my mindsets is interesting.

Farming leads to sedentary high-density living, making for a dirtier and more infectious environment

that's not even true at all. just because there's dirt doesn't mean there are more infections. in fact, people who grew up getting dirty and playing outside are sick less in their overall life spans because they develop a working immune system. and allergies correlate with "more hygenic" conditions as well.

[–]OrganicSprout 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Right. I think it's a different kind of dirt too.

[–]Camille113251 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Based on what you've shared in the IRC you fit the "cleaner" mold more than the "cooker" mold when it comes to personality, so that's no surprise that you enjoy cleaning. Farm life has a higher amount of dirt, bugs, hair, and other contaminants. I know you enjoy ranches and the outdoors so maybe you don't notice it as much/it doesn't bother you. This doesn't mean city living is super clean, but you're not tracking dirt, animal waste, and who knows what else into your home every day. And the amount of sweat and dirt that gets onto your body on a farm is also increased in comparison to non rural living situations.

As far as not being able to relate, what are the women in your life like? Or even in the media or online? Have you read a lot of homemaking blogs? I used to read a lot and the women really fit into the 2 categories. There is a clear difference between the blogs about cleaning, organisation, routines, laundry, schedules, etc. and blogs where the women loved to cook and share recipes and meal ideas. This goes beyond the focus of the blogs, the moods and personalities of the women gave a very distinct atmosphere to the sites.

To be clear this isn't an official RP theory or anything I just thought it was a neat idea and I am interested in hearing how it lines up with everyone's observations!

I LOVE cooking and I have to really force myself to clean...for me, cooking is creative, whereas cleaning is the very opposite of creative, you're just putting things back the way they were before! I love to cook for the people in my family but I can be shy cooking for those I don't know well. The article made it seem that cookers are more expansive whereas cleaners are more inner-focused...I'm definitely inner-focused. Cooking is one of the ways I look inwards and center myself.

[–]Camille11325 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thank you for sharing, I totally understand when it comes to cleaning, but thank goodness there are ways to make it fun (I have to do it daily as a homemaker so theres no escaping it at the moment)! That's awesome that you can use cooking to centre yourself, this theory is just a general - and really cool - way to approach people, I don't think it has to explain every facet of our personalities. I do think overall "cookers" are going to have more expressive and dynamic especially when it comes to the ones they love.

[–]TempestTcup1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Cooking is one of the ways I look inwards and center myself.

Cooking after coming home from work is the best way I have found to de-stress and relax into home mode; I think that it is the act of concentrating on something completely different than what I do all day long, and in the process, create something from start to finish. Then I get to relax more and enjoy a great meal with my husband :)

[–]liftinginthemoment27 | LTR | 3 years 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Lol what if you're neither?

I definitely prefer cleaning to cooking and fortunately SO absolutely loves to cook. However, I also enjoy eating very much haha.

[–]Camille113251 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Honestly I think if you're a girl and you don't like to cook or clean then you aren't feminine and possibly have bad character. How wonderful that you and your SO have a great balance :)

[–]jade_cat2 points 10 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

What an interesting point of view! I would never have thought of opposing cleaning and cooking, much less use that dichotomy to learn more about a woman's character. But it definitely makes sense!

I'd say I'm a mix of both, but primarily cleaner. I absolutely adore cleaning, and when I cook, I like to cook alone, but I love cooking for several people.

It might also be possible to make a parallel between the Myers-Briggs types and the cleaner/cooker types. From what the article say, it definitely sounds like introverts would have a strong tendency to be cleaners and extroverts would have a strong tendency to be cookers, and the three other MB traits would either reinforce or inhibit that tendency.

[–]Camille11325 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actually I changed my mind I don't think it's about femininity vs masculinity I think both cookers and cleaners are exhibiting different clusters of female traits, some more desirable than others.

[–]Camille113251 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Glad you liked it! Yes this definitely seems to be tied to MBTI, I think that Feeling vs Thinking may be the big distinction here. It also seems to be tied to femininity levels in general. We all have a blend of good and bad female and male traits within us, perhaps cookers are more on the feminine side and cleaners on the masculine side?

Interesting article, the women in my life are all cookers. On my dad's side, my grandmother was both a cooker and cleaner, she was always making all sorts of desserts and meals, and her house was always spotless. My mother's side is definitely more of the cooking, not so much cleaning.

I find myself right in the middle, I enjoy cooking and actually enjoy cleaning.

[–]Camille11325 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That is awesome! How does everyone's personalities match up with the general ideas of this post? The women in my family and M's family are all cookers and we are all warm people, whereas the women that I know who are cleaners are more reserved.

[–]VintageVee29f, engaged, together 2yrs 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm a cooker, I hate cleaning. I'm reserved until know people, then very chatty , warm, loyal. Hugely empathic and overly sensitive.

Such an interesting read.

[–]kitsunethreetails27, married 7 years, together 10 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My grandmothers were kind of the opposite, unfortunately. My father's side, she was very social but very high strung and difficult to get along with. On my mother's side, she is always picking fights with our other family members, and giving others silent treatments that last months on end. She's sometime else.

My mother is different at least, she's close to us, visits regularly. My MiL is pretty social too, I see her weekly and I do spend time alone with her for some outtings.

[–]am3liia 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Interesting post! I definitely prefer to cook. I can easily spent hours in the kitchen, and I read tons of cooking blogs and tips everyday. It's fun for me, whereas cleaning is definitely a chore and something I have to force myself to do. I would say my father's side would lean more toward cleaners, and my mom's more toward cookers. The cleaners (and that culture in general) are more reserved socially and concerned with efficiency and simplicity. The cookers/my mom's culture are more social, decorative, and carefree.

[–]CoochQuarantine 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I do not clean. Like at all. Don't get me wrong. I tidy up and organize. But anything that requires me to touch chemicals or cleaning apparatus makes me cringe..... however.... I can Cook all day long. I love love love to cook. When my man is fed I'm happiest. When he's got his lunched packed I'm happiest. When his coffee is brewing I'm happiest. I dunno what it is about the act of feeding people that brings me such joy but it does.

[–]Camille11325 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is such a neat idea and in my experience/observations it holds up well. How do the women around you match up?

I personally am a cooker and have to listen to music, watch a show, or have a makeup tutorial playing whenever I do any cleaning to make it bearable. In contrast I sometimes spend hours in the kitchen making elaborate meals, and all of our food is from scratch on a daily basis. There is definitely a connection between cooking for others and expressing my love/care for them and the only time I actually enjoy cleaning is when I am stressed out and need to reset emotionally, in isolation.

Please keep in mind that this post is a generalisation, and women can be a mix of both types as well.

[–]littleteafox 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I enjoy cooking much more than cleaning, especially baking! It's so relaxing to me and I love giving away the goods ;) it gives me personal satisfaction when I can cook for my bf.

[–]Sunhappy_DC 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know about yall but I'm a cleaner. If you get me an afternoon, I'll clean my house top to bottom spotless. I also do it to relax my mind. I am an aspiring minimalist -- I HATE clutter. I love having an almost empty and visually clean place to come home to.

Some friends I know, when they are stressed, they will bake like tons of stuff for nothing. Cooking is their go-to "me time". I find that interesting.

[–]trynarpw 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hmm, that's interesting. I personally love to cook and I love to clean but I HATE washing dishes. When I'm at home all day by myself all I want to do is cook and clean, but after cleaning the whole place, I hate the thought of cooking since I'd have to wash dishes afterwards. A constant struggle in my life, especially with a job that is 10 hours a day with 2.5 more hours of commuting on top of that. Oy.

[–]whistling_dixie 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is a really interesting article - a few of us were just talking about cleaning being a solitary activity earlier. I don't know what it is, but even if you don't like cleaning, it's just so much easier to do when you have the house to yourself.

I think I'm more of a mix of both. If I am home alone, I will idly pace the house and clean and reorganize as I go. In the same vein, I get really creative and adventurous with my cooking when I'm home alone - I like to surprise my fiance when he gets home with something he's never had before that he'll love.

That said, the standard in our home is that it's MOSTLY clean and MOSTLY organized and I cook pretty simple meals on a nightly basis. I do both, but I do less normally.
