Hi rpw, wanted to start off saying that a lot of what I read on this subreddit resonates with me.

That being said, I was curious to know your thoughts on what "commitment" looks like today, mainly in the US (and more westernized nations). Divorce rates are right around 50% last I checked, and society doesn't really look negatively towards divorce now the way it used to 30 yrs ago+.

I know TRP theory talks of women being the gatekeepers of sex, while men being the gatekeepers of commitment, and that each sex desires what the other controls. My question mainly has to do with commitment and what that looks like to you. Does that have to entail marriage? If so, why, considering how easy it is to leave the institution of marriage these days. Has anyone here been victim of this ... they committed to another (man or woman) only to be abandoned down the road for reasons that did not justify divorce (ie. cheating or abuse)?

I'm coming from this .. my ex-wife left me after cheating because she "wasn't happy" in the relationship after less than 5 years. To be honest, I got out extremely lucky ... no alimony, no children, etc., but it has left me with a pretty sour taste in my mouth when it comes to trust and ever getting married again (mainly because I know how much worse my situation could have been had we ever had children, had she been a SAHM, etc.).

Just curious to get some thoughts on any/all of this ... thanks!
