I don't think the price is what matters. What matters is only 2 things:

you liking it
it being durable

Generally, more expensive rings have better materials (gold, diamonds) that withstand the test of time. Silver may tarnish quickly, which is why people usually go for white gold. A crystal will scratch or even break, whereas a diamond won't (or moissanite which is durable but much cheaper than diamond). That's the main discerning factor for the price imo.

Unless - you don't want to wear the ring daily into your marriage. If it's only for the engagement period then that's perfectly adequate! Just not sure how it'll hold up after 10y of daily wear. It may be fine if it's nice silver and a good quality gemstone, but it'll at least take more trips to the jeweler for cleaning, polishing, reshaping (since silver tends to get warped with time), and replacing the stone if it breaks.

I can't see any reason not to go for it, other than checking it's good enough quality to stand the test of time (I've heard silver can be less durable but I'm far from an expert). The only problem I can see would be if you were repressing your desire for something more valuable but it sounds like that's not the case.

I ended up picking up an antique ring as a combined wedding/engagement ring, I love it and have never regretted it.

I picked out a ring that I adored and had a strong sentimental attachment to. It was fragile and non-traditional, we were warned by the jeweler it wouldn't last five years.

The jeweler was correct. However, I've found that as much as I loved it and was complimented on it, I don't miss it. I kinda dig just rocking our matching gold wedding bands.

I would probably just go for it. If yours doesn't last you could always commission a similar design with more durable materials down the road.

My wedding dress was also $100. I'm someone who genuinely gets a thrill out of spending less though. All that extra money we get to put towards the retirement accounts.

I think it depends on the true reason for picking the ring. If your reason for picking the $100 ring is because you don’t want someone else to spend more money on you, then check in with your self esteem. I’m not saying it’s definitely low, just that it’s worth checking in with yourself and making sure that you’re not minimizing your true desires. The same sentiment goes for people seeking big diamond rings, they should check in with why? Are they doing it to impress other people? Do they get more self worth from having a bigger ring?

If you really like the $100 ring for the style of it, then I would just make sure it’s made of quality materials and go for it.

Traditionally, an engagement ring price was three months worth of the man’s salary, so he would save up and show that he was committed, financially stable enough to take care of her and a future family, and truly valued her love. HOWEVER, that was something that was created by the diamond industry, specifically DeBeers in the 1930s, and times have changed! If you love that $100 ring, just tell him you really love it and would love to have it! Let him make you happy. Mine cost quite a bit more, but my husband picked it out himself (and did a fantastic job!) so I’m sure your boyfriend would be thrilled. As someone else said in the comments, the money saved on a ring can be put towards your life together. Show him rings that you love. You’ll be wearing it for the rest of your life! 💖

There's nothing wrong with a more affordable ring, but there is a reason people choose materials like diamonds and white gold. It's not just because of marketing, as many will claim. It's also because of durability. I have friends who buy cheap rings together every few years and mix it up. They both prefer that to an expensive piece of jewelry. Personally, I like knowing that I'll wear the ring my husband proposed to me with for the rest of my life and that it'll hold up to that. You don't have to spend several thousand on a ring, but I would personally want something durable. Just consider how you plan to wear it and how long. Lab created gemstones will hold up just as well as natural and save a mint.

It's not about the price but the commitment. If you are happy with it then that's great! Spend any extra money and go on a date or save it for the honeymoon.

We upgraded when we got engaged but my promise ring my husband got me right after we graduated high school was $60 I still wear it on my right hand and it's been 12 years.

My ring was about $100 off Etsy. It’s somewhat non traditional but I sent it to my now fiancé and he got it for me. I personally don’t mind if it doesn’t last too long. I might want a different style by then, or I could replace it if it’s still available since it was so cheap. I also might need a different ring size by then.

So if you love it, I say go for it!

Engagement rings are vestigial. They were conceived at a time when people didn't cohabit or know each other much before getting engaged, purity in women was a highly valued asset, and there were "seducers" duping women by telling them they would marry them and fleeing after laying with them (or pump and dump them as we call it today). So the meaning might elude you.

The whole purpose of an engagement ring was for it to be expensive enough that a man couldn't possibly afford more than one to give to multiple women at the same time. It is absolute proof of commitment. It is a safety mechanism against seducers.

My engagement ring was only $115… it’s just high quality sterling silver and a series of moonstones. I think it’s beautiful and fiance is really struggling financially, so it made sense for us. I wouldn’t worry about the financial value because really all that matters is that you love it and that it’s a symbol of your guys love. No one else even needs to know what it cost and if you think it’s beautiful, no doubt others will think it looks beautiful on you.

For me, engagement ring was around $50 and the wedding ring was around $300 (I wanted a dinosaur bone ring) I don’t wear much jewelry so spending a lot didn’t make sense to me.

i’d personally opt for the best ring within your guys’ budget for the engagement ring. pick a more affordable wedding band. you’re likely to lose your wedding ring, and probably don’t want to be walking around with $15,000 on your finger 24/7 365

then you can break out the engagement ring on date nights and anniversaries
