This explanation won't satisfy progressivists.
First, everything about their viewpoint is that men and women are the same. Period. I was talking to a guy that worked at the New York Times, and as soon as I mentioned that human beings are sexually dimorphic, he said, "Oh please. Human beings are one of the least sexually dimorphic species." This man is very well educated and in his 50s.
Therefore, you can't say things like, "Well, women are less aggressive about negotiating a higher salary. Women prefer different career fields." In their mind, men and women are exactly the same, and if there are any socioeconomic discrepancies between men and women, that is in itself, evidence of misogyny, sexism, and discrimination.
That's why we need more affirmative action in the workforce, because assholes like me are discriminating against women.
Women are less aggressive about negotiating salary? Must be that society is discouraging/oppressing/brainwashing women into being submissive.
Women prefer different fields? Must be that society is discouraging/oppressing/brainwashing women into preferring different fields because they are exactly the same and have the exact same abilities as men.
Modern progressivists absolutely will not accept that sexual dimorphism accounts for the socioeconomic discrepancies we see. Why? Well, that's sexist. All people, everywhere, on the entire planet are totally equal.

Shit, man, if someone gave me a billion dollars, unless I decided to buy dozens of mansions in wealthy areas (which, why? I can only sleep in one bed a night.), I'm not sure I could spend that much money in a lifetime.

Often they're so irrationally angry they want to completely ruin the man no matter the cost.
I know a guy who lost a six figure job and spent some time in jail when his ex ratted him out for dealing drugs during the divorce. Dumb bitch bragged that she was going to ruin him and "take everything."
The cops seized most of his assets, so she didn't get shit. He's now an unemployable felon, so her child support and alimony dreams are gone. She's a single welfare mom and since she also lied about him being abusive in order to kick him out of the family home, he can't even help her raise the kids because he's not allowed to be around them except for a couple hours a month of supervised visitation. The bank foreclosed on the home while he was in jail, so she lost that, too.
Yet she still blames him for it all and accepts no responsibility for her part in what happened. All she had to do was keep her mouth shut and she could have walked with six figures worth of assets and a huge monthly stipend from his on-the-books day job.

Think of it like this. Let's say he was worth $100k, that would be equivalent to him offering her 5 grand.
So is a billion dollars more than enough? Of course it is. But relative to his net worth, its not a very high percentage. This is her rationale.

The rationale behind alimony is to compensate the women for her lost opportunities in career advancement because she choose to be the spouse to take care of the house/children/whatever. I highly doubt this woman could have made $1bn on her own, let alone $9bn (50% of his supposed net worth).

While I understand your point, and I agree with it the issue here is getting married, not the greedyness IMO. Both men and women will be greedy, its on everyone's nature. Getting married without a prenup or asset protection is the main issue, but most people get married knowing the consequences of a divorce (splitting assets 50/50 that were made during the marriage)
I dont blame the woman for turning the 1 billion down, it would be idiotic to do so if by law she gets to up that to 6-7 or 9Billion.

I dont get your mentality. It angers me that divorce laws suck but this is different. The guy went ahead and got married without a prenup, no protection whatsoever.
Laws are in place that marital assets are split 50/50. There is no arguing that, it is a reality that everyone getting married needs to realize, regardless of who makes the money. It is not fair to the main contributor but it goes both ways (KFed and Britney for example where the woman makes the money)
If the guy make say 10B over the marriage then she is entitle to 5B. Yes, its stupid but thats the law. He and she both knew the law before hand and still got married. To say she is stupid to turn down 1B is stupid. Under the law she deserves 5B so she'd be leaving 4B behind.
The law is the law until it is changed. If the woman was a man and the man was being forced to accept 1B instead of 5B, would that make any difference?
Asset division sucks, but it happens when you get married. The only way to not lose is not getting married and not allowing common law marriage to creep in as well.

I got sucked into an office argument about this which I should have avoided but I was in a debating mood and was against the HR dept and accounts payable. That was the mistake, they (4 women) thought that since she was with him for 26 years she should hold out. And my argument was that he had been the CEO since 1967 while it was still the Shelly Dean Oil Co. and what part of her eventually working for him caused her to earn anything other than her normal salary, she did not help him increase his wealth in any way. So I was called an asshole by them and they hope I never raise children.
So I have that going for me from now on here. Lesson learned, the hive mind knows no bounds.

He is worth $18billion but almost certainly doesnt have most of even half of it in liquid assets. She is going to want, and the courts are going to grant her, cash instead of assets. So he is going to lose more than 50% when he is forced to prematurely sell off assets to get $9billion in cash, as he is going to try to keep investments in the most profitable ventures. I would have definitely gone for it and it seems fucked up to turn it down. But the girl is represented by counsel who know a lot more about the situation, facts, her rights, and his assets than we do, so rejecting the offer is not that crazy to me. This seems like the McDonald case all over again - Looks silly to the general public, but makes a ton of sense when you have all the facts.

I just don't understand why someone should get half of your shit just because you get divorced - that makes no sense to me. Take my situation...I'm in my mid-twenties. I met my current fiance in my senior year of college. She was there with me for moral support, sexual release and even for that simple advice that you already know but you just need to hear from someone. I'm now making decent money for my age living in NYC. Can I say I wouldn't be where I am without her? No...but can I say that I would be here without her? No...that being understood, the FACT remains that she WAS there providing all of the aforementioned support. She's even paying half of our bills which is allowing me to save money and make investments...so I can say, I won't be where I'll be when I'm 30-35 without her. So, if we got a divorce at age 40, instead of auditing every single expense, penny and receipt for the last 20 something years and figuring out just how much she's entitled to (I don't think anyone keeps track of something like that in the level of detail that would be required to prove what percentage of financial assistance one's SO provides) it's just easier to say 50%.
