As someone interning in SF, I'd say that suits were killed more by tech culture than by women looking to separate alphas from other men. The removal of suits is symbolic for an attempt to inject a whimsical, childlike air into their workplace environment. This is supposed to stimulate workplace morale, which will prompt employees to work more efficiently

Wearing properly fitted suit makes you look and feel like a champ. Wearing a suit in an atmosphere where nobody else is wearing a suit, makes you look like an overdressed dipshit.

You can look sharp and professional without a full suit. I live in the desert, a pressed button down and some nice nice slacks is more preferred because no sane person wants to wear a suit in 115 degree weather. Also, plenty of people look like morons in suits because not enough people know how to get a suit properly fitted.

Fuck I hate suits. 20+ years of wearing one 4 days per week (yay casual fridays) has crushed any enthusiasm I once had for them. I wish they were banned. It's been 90 degrees out lately, I want to wear god damn shorts.

I work in video production. Lots of people dress for comfort because it tends to be a lot of physical work. I always come dressed well. Not in a suit, because that would be highly inappropriate, but in a button-down shirt, good-fitting pants, and quality shoes. No matter what role I have on set, people assume I was the director. It's a good thing to note that when you dress as if you probably wouldn't be comfortable doing manual labor, people will assume you are above manual labor.

A month ago, I was on a job in the unusually low, for me, position of a mere production assistant (driving the van, getting coffee). Note that I only took this job because the client was a major men's magazine and a luxury car company. It's worth a low job just to be on set with clients that big. But I dressed like I was ready to go out for cocktails as soon the shoot was over.

I chatted with one of the crew members at lunch, the sound guy. He told me that when he first saw me, he assumed I was part of the client team, i.e. an advertising exec for the men's magazine or the luxury car, and thought it was strange that I was just a P.A. I laughed and said, no, that's just how I always dress on set, to always keep a professional attitude. Usually, I am the cinematographer or director. He told me that he would like me to work on his team, doing sound, something I don't even have the most experience with, because I looked like a guy who is capable. He said I probably knew enough that I could be trained in 2 days (which I could) and he needs people with that attitude to present well when he sends his guys on shoots.

One of the great things about a suit, is that it is a uniform.

Once you have it dialed in, it always looks great, and, with a glance, you can check that everything is buttoned and being worn properly.

I find "business casual" too vague and really a pain to dial in; and it can mean different things for different people. Wearing black or dark blue twill pants (like the Express for Men "Producer Pant" which is the thinnest I can go at my current fitness level), dress shoes and a button down, works 90% of the time otherwise.

I drive a truck and work as a contractor for a government agency.

When I walk into the warehouse I am usually wearing khakis and a button down shirt. I have steel toe boots on but they are polished nice.

Big deal you say? Except that only management dresses like I do. The forklift drivers, dock techs, and other truck drivers wear jeans and t-shirts and often those aren't even in good repair.

I stand out. Even though there is little chance for advancement in this company, people still respect me more because I put in that effort. When I first started dressing better about a year ago people at first thought I was one of the managers!

Now that I'm more fit I look even better in an athletic fit V-neck T-shirt with khakis. In fact, I look pretty fucking awesome since I'm doing over 300 pushups a day my chest sticks out farther than my stomach for the first time in years.

So, yeah. I totally agree about dressing better. I can't wear a suit doing some of the work I do, but I can look better than the rest and that's enough.

I work with all out of shape dudes. They used to wear suits. Myself and one of the other single dudes work out religiously and have pretty good figures. We got custom suits made that fit amazingly. All the dopey older dudes in ill fitting suits stopped wearing suits. Corporate events now require ill fitting polo shirts that were made shitty.

Suit bro and I said fuck it once wore our baller custom suits to a corporate event (dressed better than our first line boss) corporate boss was loving it. Suit bro is now head presenter over front line boss. Front line boss is PISSED but fuck him and his dopey sagey polos.

The days I could wear suits have been rare, closest was dress blues in the military. Required to have them, but working with aircraft I rarely wore them, and never to work. Shit I've never had an office job in my life. Suits are made to make you look wider, more muscular, since I am short and very muscular I look like a brick with pinstripes in a suit. I had my blues tailored in Korea, and a couple suits too because for $150 it's dirt cheap to have clothes that fit because they were made for me. That was almost 15 years ago and I haven't worn them at all, simply because there is no need....And I look like a brick.

For you office guys suits work, for sweat equity dirty hands types they're rarely utilized, funerals, court appearance, and shit like that is all we wear them for.

My uniform is the Johnny Bravo, black t shirts and jeans, because I have the V shape already and accentuating it makes me look like a caricature.

So I actually had a front row seat to the whole dotcom revolution (1.0) back in the late 90s and yeah, it was quite the running joke: you always knew who had the money in the room based on whoever was the most sloppily dressed... If you're in a conference room with a dozen people, and there are 11 guys in suits and one guy in shorts in flip flops, it's the guy in the flip flops who has all the money—saw this time and time again...

Of course my staff and I wrestled with this ourselves, when we were out meeting with potential investors, doing the whole VC dance etc—like, do we wear suits, go ultra casual, what? Suits, we thought, were a bit too “try hard”—like they reeked of “We’re desperate for your money, please please PLEASE give it to us!!”… But the shorts and flip flops, on the other hand, although intended to signal “We’re so wrapped up in our own work that we just don’t care how we dress”, really just (I thought) came off as asshole-ish… Like: dude, you’re basically on a “first date” with these people (the VCs you’re meeting with, or whomever)—let’s show a little respect, yes?

I agree that if you’re a coder or whatever and you’re bent over a computer all day long then a suit becomes superfluous (you can go ahead and dress purely for comfort)—but if you’re interacting with clients, trying to raise money, dealing with people etc then you have to present a certain kind of polished image, and the flip flops just don’t cut it. Bit of a tightrope really, between the formal and the casual, but we found that (when it came to actually impressing people and successfully raising money) the trick was to be fairly casual, but then to toss in one or two items that were extremely high value, just to let people know what was up…

Example: you wear the company T-shirt, a pair of ratty old ripped up jeans, comfy sneakers, and then you throw a $3,000 dollar tailored jacket on top of it all… I still remember the first time I tried out that combo—I was having drinks one evening with the CEO of another company we were thinking of merging with, and at one point (totally out of character) the guy was like “Man—that is a NICE jacket…” I shrugged and said something like “Yeah, I kinda like this one. Just got it! Impulse buy…” Take away message: we (at my company) have money and we’re not afraid to spend it on nice things we like and thus no, you’ll not be screwing us on any deals we might be talking about in the not-too-distant future…

So yeah, for the artists and entrepreneurs out there, when you’re making the rounds, showing off your work, raising money etc, try for the “casual—plus one expensive peacock item” look (a nice jacket, an expensive watch etc)—you'll get the best of both worlds with this combo for sure. (Bonus!! Works great on dates as well.)

If suits and ties would go I'd say "Good Riddance!" It's an unpractical and uncomfortable set of clothes that get in a way of productive work. There's one thing when you dress well - clothes all match colors and styles, clothes fit your bodytype - and another thing when some fashion dictates you should dress in an irrational fashion - say, wear a tie which is basically a suffocation device which makes your brain get less oxygen and thus function poorly, or, wear a suit in a room where tempreature is already high, thus making you even more uncomfortable and thus work less effectively.

Also, just to be clear, most guys in suits look like their dressed for their Bar Mitzvah. You actually have to get a suit tailored to make it look good. Also if you aren't in at least reasonably good shape a suit can just make you look bigger and boxier than something more casual.

suits are ugly and conformist. The reason I don't wear them is because they represent nonsense (except at a funeral) and are incredibly uncomfortable.

NEVER do I see women pining for men in suits.

I see them drooling over men wearing tight-fitting shirts or no shirt who are fit.

It really just sounds like you don't know how to dress, and are constantly around poorly dressed people. I went to private school k-8 so suits were my default until I learned what looks just as sexy. Things like henleys, unexaggerated v-necks, a WELL FITTING button down, tapered pants, wingtips (yes with any outfit), Raw denim/well fitting jeans. I used to literally have everyone know me by how well I dressed in college, and didn't wear a suit once. You have to learn the essence of a suit, and what makes it sexy. Don't make it your crutch, and don't be the one that looks weird as fuck outside of the office in plain clothes.

I disagree. Around the 90's a study came out of Cornell University (if I recall correctly) that discussed the various health issues neckties caused, such as restricted blood flow to the brain and potential eyesight issues.

I went to school with a kid who was going for his first job at a gas station down the street. His dad told him to wear a suit for the interview and he thought his dad was nuts but did it anyways.

He said he was hired ahead of 10 other applicants at the end of the interview and told he got it because he was the only one to wear a suit.

In SF as well. I find a well tailored sport coat with good dark (I prefer lucky) jeans and a French cuffed shirt hits that nice line between looking awesome and looking like a try hard. The girls notice, the audience with customers and clients notice and you co-workers notice. In the land of the fashionless the one with a bit of style is king.
