I saw this first hand in Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong: the local women despise the local men. EDIT: However, the local men are fawned over by other Asian women, especially from less-developed regions like Mainland China and Southeast Asia. I've even read Eastern Russian women are starting to go after Japanese and Korean men.

HK has be to hypergamy hell: it's one of the few developed regions where young women significantly outnumber young men. You'd think there would be fierce female competition for average men right? Wrong. Throw in a tiny uber-elite class of businessmen and bankers, and average men are invisible. HK women are so utterly miserable in their desperate pursuit of status; they would rather be 10th on an elite man's list and jump at a 3 am booty call than have a decent middle-class man to themselves. A tiny fraction of people actually get what they want.

[–]watersign 21 points22 points23 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

that sounds fucking miserable. holy shit.

Asians for you.

Source: I'm Asian.

[–]icanteventhecat 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It is. I love traveling in Asia and I love Asians, but everywhere I go I meet stressed out and frustrated 20 and 30 somethings of both sexes. At least North America is a comparatively less stifling culture where there are no real rules.

[–]watersign 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

How is Singapore? As someone who is a neo-objectivist and libertarian, it sounds like the place to be.

[–]icanteventhecat 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've been to Singapore for only a few weeks some years ago. It's similar to Asia with respect to hypergamy but not nearly as bad as lets say HK. I should note this is based on my limited experience with Singaporeans, which was mostly elite university students and going out to few bars. However, I saw a lot more happy-looking couples around town, especially average men with average women. Didn't notice much overt hen-pecking like in HK.

There appears to relatively less materialism in SG than HK, and on the surface it promotes itself as meritocratic heaven. Of course, the reality of living in a wealthy city state is that connections do matter a lot, but there are great opportunities for foreigners.

You'll hear a lot about "sarong party girls," i.e., girls with white fever. However, actually dating non-party SG girls is slow and conservative.

Personally, I really enjoyed SG (and HK) and would live and work there for a few years if the opportunity arose. However, many foreigners think it's boring and too hot. Note that SG is not socially libertarian at all despite being socially conservative. It's economically free and that's about it. Best food in the world though.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's awful...and totally, utterly predictable.

After all, her biological imperative is that she can still get pregnant with alpha seed from that 3AM booty call. Contraception's got nothing on instincts.

[–]icanteventhecat 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup. Even my "white privilege" wasn't very valuable in HK compared to other places in Asia. It's the kind of place where everyone's trying to look rich or go into debt trying. Coming from Western Canada, I just don't do this.

On top of everything, average HK women are bumped up a notch or two by non-Asian men in terms of attractiveness due to cultural perceptions of beauty. So, even the women who can't screw elite Asian men can still screw elite foreign men.

So when women are behind it's a gender gap.

When men are behind, it's not a gender gap. It's a reverse gender gap.

Otherwise we dilute women's monopoly on victimization!!

The only gender gap I care about is the gender gap between your thighs.

I thought the article was pretty even-handed. She says women are on the ascent - which can only mean men are on the descent. All said and done, men and women are fully equal in the US, and have been for years. Yet the women's rights movement is stronger than ever - someone has to be detracted from. In this case, men. There are more women than men graduating with degrees, which in a few more decades is going to relegate more and more men to blue collar work or starting thier own businesses. It's only going to further the 80/20 rule to a 90/10.

Ya know, this might be an irrelevant point, but I genuinely feel bad for the men of those Asian countries. Their suicide rate and prevalence of mental issues is only going to worsen as many of their best women move out of the country.

And Japan, as I understand it, has totally become subsumed by feminist ideology, to the point that Japanese women are as bad entitled as American women when it comes to their expectations of men. Hence the herbivore man phenomenon and the apocalyptic birth rate

[–]kinklianekoff 20 points21 points22 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

the education system in most of the West is fast track streamlined for the women described in this article to arrive at their service sector job with bloated salary compared to production.

With that said, I doubt the analysis is even correct. Saying that there isn't men who earn more than them in their area is unlikely as the pay gap if there even is one is not huge. What I'd rather think is an issue is that these are post-wall women with a serious hamster issue seeing as they have effectively broken the af/bb by providing for themselves while simultanously not begin attractive enough for the small amount of AF at their age.

yup..the older i get the more i realise life is either be alpha go to a top school and work in london/nyc or be a fuck-all nobody.

[–]TehFuggernaut 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I visit NYC fairly frequently - and it blows my mind how many young people are there trying to 'live the dream' and then within 3 years realize they capped out their salaries, can't afford the apartment they want, and have to move out of the city/stop partying 3-5 nights a week, and grow up.

[–]watersign 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

haahah as someone who grew up in the northeast..i laugh when someone tells me their profession and it isnt finance or some other high level corporate job. id love to live in manhatten but im only moving there if i ever get a job at a hedge fund

[–]TehFuggernaut 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Exactly - I was jealous at first of my friends getting jobs in NYC out of college making 60-70k. But then I realized that we've been gradauted for 4 years, they are making marginally more, still paying $2k in Manhattan rent, and I have my own house and make ~$50k a year (still in the Northeast, just not in NYC).

[–]watersign 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

yup..one of the reasons why im leaving the northeast..you can live a decent middle class life on 40-50k a year in texas or utah and a young single dude making that kinda $$ with no debt is good to go! if i was making 50K in nj or ct id still be living with mom and dad

[–]TehFuggernaut 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In Texas you can buy a $200k house equivalent to a $400k+ house in Jersey.

Because by "men" they mean "extremely wealthy men" like stockbrokers and other businessmen, who do cluster in places like NYC. It doesn't matter if the average guy is there or not, because they won't notice him anyway.

[–]strimpboi 8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thing about rich bankers is...they tend to date/marry other rich bankers. I would love to see the smirk on some Private Equity guy's face when he is approached by a bumpkin marketing director from Omaha.

This happens a lot in London. Go out to the bars and clubs in Mayfair, the City, or Canary Wharf on a Friday night and most of the girls aren't local office workers - they're Essex girls tarted up to the nines and trying to shag a banker

[–]Lithiumthium 9 points10 points11 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

First of all hello from Brazil.

Yeah it is happening around some cities here, women's behaviour is almost men like, they hit you, they use pickup lines, some of them do the "hiwhatsyournamedoyouwantmetospitorswallow" approach.

My theory is that these women, while on their 7 to 10 in hotness scale can't compete with those 5's and 6's that knows ( thanks to lots of failures ) what men seek in a SO, they are nerdy, these 5's know politics, they can engage in a conversation, they understand their role and the role of their opposites, of course ye olde rules apply for beta/alpha/etc, but they are not that strong in 10 women for 1 man enviroments, women that can't adapt this new enviroment tilts, myself and some other friends had this strange situation where a car with 3 women "asked us out", it was... weird, they were open, 0 shit tests, looking for something more 'deep' like a relationship, DTF, it was... Damn...

But well, it had a catch, the 3 girls were as crazy as they were hot, pure Barney Stinson's Crazy/hotscale.

Anyways it comes to this: Intelligent 5's and 6's gets the best men and they end up in a happy relationship while dumb 7's+ gets desperate cause the only thing they get is one night of sex then get dumped, and most men are taken or gay, and there aren't much left.

Sorry for my bad engrish.

Many couples are perfectly content and well adjusted, but for the stigmatizing opposition of friends, family, in-laws and even religious traditions...

...The stigma, sometimes subtle, sometimes blatant, undermines relationships between high-earning women and the husbands or boyfriends who are secondary earners or “househusbands,”

LOL

Husband- "We never have sex anymore!!"

Wife- "Quit yelling at me. I told you, these religious traditions make me feel stigmatized!!"

[–]2johnnight 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This made me mildly angry.

At no point would the f*ing NYT consider hypergamy as a biological constant in women. Noooo, poor women were 'tricked' by friends & religion into being that way. Can't blame women for their choices!

“We’ve arrived at the top of the staircase, finally ready to start our lives, only to discover a cavernous room at the tail end of the party, most of the men gone already, some having never shown up — and those who remain are leering by the cheese table, or are, you know, the ones you don’t want to go out with.”

Hm, sounds a lot like what happens to the aging blue pillers.

[–]TehFuggernaut 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The men never showed up because there are women taking those positions. Its not rocket science.

[–]otiswild 12 points13 points14 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What would be sad if it wasn't so deliciously schadenfreudesque, is that the women most likely to be high-T and career driven are the ones most hypergamous. So their drive is pushing them to need to compete for higher-and-higher status alpha males, who have NO LTR/marriage interest in them. If they were smart, they'd go for SF/SJ/Palo Alto and hope to find the highest possible status betas etc., who are hopefully (for them) too stupid or brainwashed to know them for what they are: status-diggers. And even then, the lower-T females who are more feminine and who haven't sacrificed their youth to their ambition will likely win out aside from the most heavily-programmed males (who will make them the MOST miserable).

[–]2johnnight 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

status-diggers

You coined a new word!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This reminds me of those guys who actually think they can just mail order this perfect, submissive, beautiful bride from Ukraine or Colombia for 50-100k and they can circumvent being a total beta bucks loser with a one time payment. It's a delusion - you can't just be this low value dude who can't get girls, and then just cheat the system and have a 9 waiting to cook for you and suck your dick. Even if you have the money required to buy that, she isn't going to be content in that role for long, she'll say thanks for the American citizen ship, divorce you, take your shit, and prepare to go jack a richer guy.

The problem for these women looking to travel to richer pastures to find a beta bucks is that there is a true scarcity here. While there will always be an abundance of pussy, there is an actual # wealthy, desirable men. In the past that number kept increasing due to the benefits of capitalism and patriarchy, meaning more and more women were able to date these guys, get put into at least a middle class comfortable life, etc. Yet now with 40:60 male - female graduates, pussy passes in virtually all difficult fields / careers for women, male taxes such as alimony / CS... good luck.

If you want to view men as a resource to extract, as nothing more than a commodity, then you have to get in line behind every other gold digger trying to do the same. Beta bucks will keep on growing and growing in demand, but the supply is hard-locked by socio-economic factors. This means that the in-demand commodity, even if they are beta, can raise their price and in this context that means only more attractive girls will be getting their beta bucks.

Plus in economically tighter times for men, where a lower % of men will be succeeding through various biased environments... you've gotta assume that the ones who do "make it rich" will be smarter. During financial downturns, it's the crafty ones, the ones who intuitively understand the reality at play who manage to succeed. While the boom of the 90s basically let any moron with a little work ethic and luck make it into the middle / upper middle class, it will be very, very different for the next 20 years or so by my estimation. (Which, take it for what you will, I'm not a econ phd).

Women want "alpha bucks" basically. The comfort and security of beta bucks + the thrill of dating a high status, powerful guy. Women will SETTLE for beta bucks and be reasonable happy, so the media figured there would be no harm in beta-izing men and pussifying the western world. Fine. But when you redistribute the wealth via socio-economic tinkering / soft-engineering, then you create BROKE BETAS, the absolute worst combination to a woman, the ultimate pussy-drier.

I think this kind of guy genuinely understands in many cases that it's over as soon as she gets her citizenship. But here's the deal: that's still four years plus of a 9 waiting to cook for you and suck your dick. They think that's a good trade-off. Same for the fat ugly dudes who marry 6s from the Philippines -- four years plus of much better than they could ever do for 'free'...

This quote is particularly obnoxious. "If, in all sectors of society, women are on the ascent, and if gender parity is actually within reach, this means that a marriage regime based on men’s overwhelming economic dominance may be passing into extinction.”

This so called "marriage regime", for the past 50 years, has been men handling the needs of women so they don't have to break their backs working 60 hour work weeks. Yes, men have been dominating women by paying for their shit... What is she talking about "passing this marriage regime based on men's economic dominance into extinction"... what exactly does she think will replace it?

A marriage regime based on female's economic dominance is the obvious answer, but certainly they can extrapolate from this phenomena what that would look like.

what exactly does she think will replace it?

A system of common-law gimmiedats where being in a relationship for greater than 6 months entitles her to half his shit when she breaks up with him?

Hah, don't compete. Up your game and you'll do fine. There's plenty of beautiful women in Boston to go around.
