I just finished reading No More Mr. Nice Guy and I feel like it's changed my life and how I think. Never have I felt so perfectly portrayed before. I knew I could related to the beta in that book. It's something I'm glad I read, something I plan on reading again shortly, and something I plan on reading many many more times.

Reading it and being an avid reader here on this subreddit have got me thinking about confidence. It's a word i see thrown around here a lot... Confidence. But I think I have a hard time understanding clearly what exactly confidence is. I'm 24, I live on my own in a nice apartment, I have a good well paying job, a good career ahead of me, and I'm in the best shape of my life due to working out several times a week for the past few years and eating healthier. I mean I'm no Adonis and I'm maybe just slightly above average looking, but I give it my best at the gym and I'm working on my wardrobe constantly. I put in plenty of effort. I took the advice from a lot of different areas and applied them to my life. Get money, improve your body, get talents/hobbies, etc etc. I'm a talented guitar player/music writer, learning to cook, and play volleyball with some people once a week. In summary- I've taken that basic advice that you see people give with regards to "How to obtain confidence". And yet... I'm not sure I feel any different. Sure, I'm a lot happier than I used to be. I used to be an overweight kid in college who never had girlfriends, dates, sex, or any female attention really. I played video games all day. I squandered a good portion of my college social experience, something I regret deeply. But I've come so far. People tell me I'm in a really good place for someone my age and my parents are very proud of me. And it's true, I have come so far and accomplished so much as someone who I don't think a lot of people really expected much from. Along the way I've even managed a girlfriend, some dates, and some sex.

So here I am. I've taken that advice on how to obtain confidence and I've got out to seek it. I've done the hard work and I continue to everyday. I read new books, I travel to new places, and I continue to work on my body. But I'm not sure I feel any more confident. When I go out I still get nervous about talking to girls and new social situations. I moved from home, halfway across the country, to a big city to change my surroundings and get out of my shell. It's been about 7 months and I'm constantly trying to meet people. It's slow goings, but I try. While reading that book has taught me to just go after things, take what you want, and face your fears, it still makes me think about what exactly confidence is... I still wonder how doing all that self improvement makes you more confident when approaching girls and in other aspects of life.

I'm just not sure I get it. I simply pose this question to you- what is confidence?
