I did something stupid, but I won't tell you about it. Now my wife is mad, and we have to do something together, but I can't tell you about it. Please tell me how to improve our relationship, but I won't tell you my current status as a leader or what effort I have put into solving my own problems.

You should read about the prisoners dilemma - marriage is just an iterative version of that game. If you are in a bad spot in your relationship you play your nice card every day regardless of the previous day - if things are okay play your mean card until she straightens up - problem solved.

Operant conditioning is way more important than I realized when I first started this.

Also if you make a bad choice as a captain you own it move on and learn from it.

I would sit her down and tell her that you are going to have a great time on this trip and while you hope she does too, that’s up to her. Tell her that the fuckup is over and done and will be fixed and you are moving on. Then get up and go somewhere she can’t follow you like the gym.

If the conversation is more than 3 min, you’ve fucked up. This approach allows her hamster time to digest what happened and then move on.
