Some good news:

Since I've started to realize that a shit test can't hurt me and ignored them, they've decreased.

This morning, wife asked in a reasonable tone "You seem to be buying a lot of new clothes lately" (true)

I replied "My old shorts are starting to not fit, I rewarded myself. Got 'em at the outlet mall cheap."

(Yes, a too much detail on my part, DEER-y. okay.)

She said nothing for a moment, then apologized for accusing me "I'm really glad you are getting the results you want."

On to the next Q:

She is into prepping and wants to get an AR-15. I took the request seriously. She is a stay at home mom and I am a reasonably successful consultant. We can afford it.

The problem: The AR-15 would be a /reward/ right? For good behavior? She seems to need my approval. I told her that she could use a credit card for it and I couldn't stop her, but she still seems to want my approval.

She also seems to be unable to have a conversation about it. Honestly, we haven't had a meaningful conversation for perhaps a year. It's all logistics about the kids and arguments.

I suggested we could make a list of our prepping goals and monthly expenses - so if we ant to spent $200/mo on prepping, then we can get it in 5 months. She said that wouldn't include ammo, etc, she didn't know if it would be good for hunting. (I don't hunt, my brother, 2K miles away, does.)

My next idea is to frame it as a prize for good behavior. I'm looking for advice for how to word that. My offhand ideas are very blue-pill-y "This sounds like a want, not a need. We have needs that aren't being met. I'd suggest that when our needs our met, and we can have a conversation, we look into an AR-15 together."

Better ideas to word it or better yet, actions I can take? She currently thinks of me as LMV. Demands will be laughed at. I get it.
