IDGAF side of me says do whatever you enjoy regardless of what society says.

Quit now and never look back. It's no different than any other addiction.

[–]Senior ContributorOmLaLa1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah quit while you can. I've just begun making strides in quiting after over a year of attempts (ecigs and vaping helped immensely).

[–]toss_me_awazer0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Have you tried the patch? I liked it more than gum because it helps get rid of the ritual around smoking (smoking after meals, smoking after sex, smoking after drive... etc.), as opposed to the gum (vaping wasn't even an option when I quit, but I bet that's even worse).

[–]myexile0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Quit, it really provides no benefits. Only negatives.

Just prepare for those "fucking christ I really want a cig" moments when you have quit. Those suck

[–]fuckin_retard1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Furthermore, its not pathetic because its a "chemical addiction"... plenty of people are chemically addicted to coffee but its fine because coffee doesn't give you god damn lung cancer. Cigarettes are literally the number one surefire way to die young, get your tongue/throat removed, have shitty skin, bad teeth, bad breath. For fuck's sake, its not cool anymore. Drop the habit STAT

[–]TRP VanguardWhisper18 points19 points20 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The nihilistic, IDGAF side of me says do whatever you enjoy regardless of what society says.

If you had this attitude about cake, you'd be a fat slob, wouldn't you?

How is lung cancer any different?

Society doesn't make you fat. Cake does. Society doesn't give you lung cancer. Tobacco does.

[–]fnordsnord10 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Quit smoking.

[–]SaintMarinus8 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Go through 7-10 cigarettes a day and extremely enjoy it

TRP would say to cut your bad habit. It has a negative affect on your health and your finances. You could be using that money elsewhere.

If you have family (Wife, kids) then you need to stop now.

My grandparents both married as smokers and are clean for 30+ years. My uncle smoked his whole life until he got cancer and beat it two years ago. He used the blu vape pen to quit his addiction.

[–]Anon_Dutch2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Think about it rationally. Does it contribute to or detract from your SMV and long term happiness? The answer should be obvious.

I quit my almost 10 year long 20 cigarette a day addication abojt two months ago and will never go back. I bought a high end e-cigarette, which I fill with zero-nicotine e-fluid. It helped enormously to be able to continue the habit of puffing on something while I overcame the physical nicotine addiction and accompanying withdrawl symptoms. Now the e-cigarette is gradually and effortlessly starting to fall by the wayside. Some days I am still shocked to realize that I did it, I am a non-smoker now and better for it.

[–]RocketManV2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ex-smoker here, I read Allen Carr's Easyway. Getting off cigarettes was easy, enjoyable, and I didn't get anxious or overeat. There were literally no downsides to getting off cigarettes, and the book walks you through the whole process.

[–]pinstrap1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I read EASYWAY also. Would recommend it too every smoker! Fuck cigs, they do nothing for you.

[–]fuccboi9000 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

smoking and addiction is being indentured to Big Tobacco. Are you your own man?

[–]_Stardog1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'd definitely quit since it's a habit that can seriously damage your health.

I smoke a pipe once every 3 or so days and I find it much more enjoyable than cigarettes. It's a significantly different experience from smoking cigarettes. Because a pipe can be quite annoying to carry around, you rarely do it in public, making it less convenient that just taking a 5 minute break to smoke a shitty cigarette. I usually smoke in my back yard while reading a book. A session lasts about 30 minutes, and as long as you don't inhale and make it into a habit, you should be mostly fine. I'm not going to hamster and lie to you and say that pipe smoking is healthy, but its negative effects are negligible when compared to cigarettes. Pipe tobacco is usually just tobacco with a tiny bit of flavouring in it, much unlike the additives and preservatives that are packed into cigarettes. Also, I broke the ice and picked up a couple of girls in college simply by sitting on a bench and smoking something pretty smelling, like cherry flavoured tobacco. I didn't even have to do anything.

[–]TheLife_1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I quit. I tried to Charlie Sheen it (closed my eyes and made it so,) and while successful, it was far more expensive to do it this way than gum or patches. I still have to chew gum (not the quit smoking kind) when I have cravings.

Basically I hit it cold turkey. The problem with that is that I hit the withdrawals hard. I hadn't heard of monk mode or thought to try meditation. I spent three weeks stomping around, putting holes in the walls and being an aggro fuck.

On the plus side I learned about plastering.

[–]Sam_Who_Likes_cake2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I'm glad I read this. I actually just started smoking a little but I was unsure whether I should continue this or not I'll stop now. Thanks guys

[–]pinstrap0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I used to smoke and thought I manly as fuck. I've quit since, but in truth there's nothing manly about it at all. There's nothing manly about systematically destroying your organs and giving yourself cancer. But unfortunately the media has just brainwashed us into thinking its a manly habit through film and other media. Wanna know what's really manly? Lifting, eating right, and taking care of your body and mind.

[–]MeatCurtainRod0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Quit smoking. We all know the reasons why you should stop. It cripples you. There is just as big a negative social stigma against smokers, compared to the few and dwindling positive stigmas around smokers.

Besides, you aren't a master of yourself if you are a slave to an addiction.

[–]wont_tell_i_refuse0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Get an e cig for weekdays, smoke when going out.

[–]FelixCopy 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I did this and accidentally quit altogether, including vaping, when I stopped going out as much.

[–]Myrpl0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

I used to smoke 40 cigarettes a day while having a sedentary office life, for over 8 years. I was coughing like a maniac whenever I was going to sleep, cold hands, indigestion. One day I decided to man the fuck up and take the cold turkey road like a man and boom, cough + cold hands gone. I guess I don't have to remind you to lift, right?

Don't wait until the moment when the impact to your health is visible to everyone and their dog and quit that shit before that.

[–]1nyrp0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

How does the cold hands come about? Poor circulation?

[–]kawasutra0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep

[–]throw_em_all 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Half a pack a day smoker here, is it financially irresponsible? Probably, does it hold me back in other aspects of life such as lifting? Most likely, is it unhealthy? Most definitely, so why do I keep doing it? Half physical and mental addiction, half I like tobacco.

I'm not going to rationalize my reasons, I enjoy it period.

As for quitting, I recommend throwing away all paraphernalia, ashtrays, lighters, every single one and go cold turkey, since you're smoking less than a pack per day, cold turkey shouldn't be that hard, also timing it with your bulk could be beneficial, hit the gym harder and throw in cardio to clean the pipes faster.

Also if you smoke inside your house, ventilate that shit 24/7 and spray it with perfume or something every day, also I've found that leaving cups with white vinegar in each room helps a little with removing the smell.

[–]Anon_Dutch1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I "enjoyed" smoking for almost 10 years. The "enjoyment" is nothing more than a rationalization of the addiction. Unlike marijuana, alcohol, and caffeine, nicotine has no mood altering effect. The only effect nicotine has is to relieve the withdrawl symptoms that developed since you put out your previous cigarette. An addicted smoker is thus tricked into believing that the cigarette has a positive effect, that it makes him feel better when in fact all it does is reduce the negative effect that the previous cigarette created. As David Carr put it, the enjoyment of smoking is like the enjoyment of taking off a pair of shoes that is too tight. It is an illusion, not genuine enjoyment. Don't put on the shoes in the first place (i.e. break the addiction). A smoker who is smoking feels no better than a non-smoker who is not smoking, but a smoker who is not smoking feels worse than a non-smoker who is not smoking. TL:DR Non-smoker > smoker.

[–]throw_em_all -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Have you ever tried rolling tobacco? or you used to smoke packed cigarettes only? Because I'm not denying it's harmful and addictive, that's a fact, but there's as many types of tobacco out there as coffee and booze, packed cigs taste and smell like burning newspaper, although I do recognize that I started smoking with packed cigs and continued to do so for the first year.

Chill man, I'm not encouraging anyone to smoke and as an ex smoker it's pretty hypocritical of you to lecture people of how bad cigs are and how we are all tricked into this good feeling don't you think? How many times have people done this to you while you smoked? I've heard this story a million times and I've told it a billion times, don't lecture me.

[–]Anon_Dutch0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No dude, it's not at all hypocritical, I quit. It would only be hypocritical if I advised others against it while I continued to smoke myself. Since I quit, I can recommend others to do the same without an iota of hypocrisy. I didn't lecture at all on how bad cigarettes are, I didn't even mention any of the ill effects, I merely explained how the "enjoyment" is an illusion and a rationalization of what is purely an addiction. I know it's unpleasant to hear, it was unpleasant for me every time someone mentioned it, but that unpleasantness contributed to my positive decision to finally quit. FYI, "don't lecture me" makes you sound like a whiny teenager. PS I smoked Marlboro Mediums for about 5 years, rolled my own with Nat Sherman tobacco for a little over a year, then switched to American Spirits for the last four years.

[–]throw_em_all 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I merely explained how the "enjoyment" is an illusion and a rationalization of what is purely an addiction.

Nah, you merely assumed that I was too stupid to know that. But whatever, I guess there's some feeling of superiority involved in quitting smoking, cheers.

[–]Anon_Dutch0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I didn't assume anything, you literally said that you enjoy smoking. Hence my response, you think you enjoy it, I did too, but it's not genuine enjoyment, it's an illusion, the addiction is playing a trick on your mind. I would not have bothered to explain that if you hadn't literally said that you enjoy smoking. Since you mentioned a feeling of superiority, that has actually been one of the hardest parts of quitting. Smoking was part of my identity. I was a bad ass, a fire breather, one of the chosen few. Smoking was my bad boy side, which balanced out my overachieving side. I have needed to actively convince and remind myself that I am better for being a non-smoker, that I am more of a bad ass for quitting, that my SMV has increased, that smoking is not manly or cool, but dumb and weak. So yes, I have a feeling of superiority for being a non-smoker, and it's completely justified, I hope you feel the same some day.

[–]throw_em_all 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hence my response, you think you enjoy it, I did too, but it's not genuine enjoyment, it's an illusion, the addiction is playing a trick on your mind.

You're still assuming I don't have the ability to discern withdrawal relief from actual enjoyment of something I can taste and smell.

Maybe that's because you never saw tobacco that way back when you smoked, so there's no way you can understand that I'm fully aware of the vicious cycle that addiction to cigarettes is, yet I still enjoy the different aromas and flavors, so further discussion is futile.

[–]Thizzlebot0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I too enjoy smoking but don't enjoy the feeling cigs gave me the next day and I couldn't exercise. I switched to vaping and never looked back. If you enjoy the effect of smoking switch to vape or just drop it all together.

[–]94redstealth0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

QUIT, you can't be at your best when you are a slave to something.

The nihilistic, IDGAF side of me says do whatever you enjoy regardless of what society says.

That's the same mentality that keeps betas orbiting

[–]rubixx392 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a pathetic chemical addiction. There are plenty of other vices out there – replace yours with something that won't give you lung cancer by 50. If you have to smoke, why not just switch to weed or try vaping?

[–]Duellator 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You can't "cut back on your habit". It's a drug that requires ever increases doses to acheive the same level of dopamine rush.

My advice: switch to vaporizer. google vape shop for your city and go get a starter kit.

Other option: Quit nicotine altogether. This is hard. I have done it with the drug Chantix. Ask your doctor.

[–]WillWorkForLTC0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Quit. I am like you and unlike the majority of folks in that I miss it so much! But you miss it less and less little by little every day. Eventually it's not on your mind except when you smell it the odd time. Smoking was intensely enjoyable for me as it is for you. Make it a was. You owe it to yourself and no one else.

[–]3alreadyredschool0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not hard to stop, people just try to convince them and others that it is so that they are not failing hard.

[–]iBeNiko 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's your life do whatever the fuck you want. You know what smoking can do to your body.

[–]KaribouLouDied0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I smoke to isolate potentials. That's it.

[–]thefisherman19610 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Addiction is a beta behavior because it means you are not in control of yourself. Being out of control is blue pill.

[–]BoatAccidentAccount0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Smoking is disgusting and you should quit for the sake of your health and for the sake of your wallet.

[–]69Cobalt0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you like the smoke whatever appeal switch to a vape at least or only smoke on special occasions,it's such a ridiculously harmful habit to have there is no justification.

[–]ChiefBigLeaf0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Imagine pulling money out of your wallet and lighting it on fire every time you light up a cig.

[–]NidStyles0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fuck that, it's literally burning money for no benefit.

[–]Quadraphonic- 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To paraphrase the late Christopher Hitchens nicotine is really the Perfect drug. It will help you stay awake when you need to AND clam you down for sleep. It can curb your appetite while also being the perfect finish to a nice meal.

The post sex drug of choice. Hitch also said about alcohol and all drugs they are better servants than masters. Meaning when your in control it's a nice ride but they are unforgiving slave drivers when they run the show.

hitch died of cancer from smoking so take his advice to the grave. I wish I never started.

[–]Senior ContributorMentORPHEUS0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Quit! I smoked for 7 years, tried many games and tricks but couldn't quit. A political awakening caused a mental sea change in me, and I stopped cold turkey and carried the open pack in my shirt pocket untouched for 3 days before finally giving them to a smoker.

Quit cigarettes, they bring no value and lots of harm to your life.

[–]Endorsed Contributorvandaalen0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Quit. The increase in life quality is just amazing.

If you want to, subtitute with vaping. I switched from 30-40 cigarettes a day to vaping and never looked back. I tried everything else before and even with nicotine straps I couldn't go longer than a day without smoking a cigarette.

It's not the same as smoking a cigarette, but can be as enjoyable and relaxing like it and it's easy to develop some kind of passion for it, like mixing your own liquids, or coiling your own vaporizers.

Check out /r/electronic_cigarette/. If you choose to switch to vaping just make sure you aren't a crook when it comes to buying your device. It makes a huge difference if you are using this or that.

[–]brujon1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Fellow smoker here.

The fact that i smoke has put off a LOT of girls that would otherwise have totally gone for me. This is one issue. Stamina, that's another issue. I find it hard to maintain good cardio because i smoke so much, and this leads to me not having as much stamina as i would otherwise like to have. It means i get tired faster after sex, can't maintain 100% pumping speed for as long as i would want to, etc. Not to mention all the potential health problems in the long run, plus increased vulnerability to flu's, throat infections, pneumonia and general airway related illnesses.

It's a bad habit. It spreads to your clothes, your hair, your room, everything you own ends up smelling like an ashtray, and people do notice this.

Because of my smoking, it's harder for me to bulk up and exercise, simply because my conditioning has been shot to shit. It's much harder. I still do it, but, it sucks big time.

Everything would be a lot easier if i quit, but i know it's hard to. I have quit before, spent months smoke-free, and ended up getting back into it.

I'll tell you, because that's how it has always worked for me, that the only person that can weigh the pros and cons here is you. You're the only one that can say that enough is enough, and that you don't need that in your life anymore.

I'd advice you to at least switch to e-cigs, see if they work out for you. They do almost no damage to your health compared to normal cigs, don't smell bad or leave smells on you or your stuff, and basically have no impact on your quality of life, contrary to cigs.

Failing that, there's other options. When i did quit for months at a time, nicotine patches helped out with the cravings during the first few weeks, as did reducing my drinking significantly - to me, at least, there's a direct and proportional correlation with how much i drink vs how much i smoke.

I didn't like nicotine gums, they taste like shit and make your mouth feel all weird and you lose your palate. Not recommended.

Exercise helps out a lot. You can't smoke while you're on the gym, and when you get out, i find that you don't feel a craving for a cigarrette right out the door. That's at least 2-3 hours you aren't smoking in a day. On the same vein, changing your routine is also a good way of trying to kick off the habit of smoking, which is a big part of addiction.

If you hang out with a lot of people that smoke, try and hang out with them somewhere where they can't smoke, or back off of hanging out with them, at least for a few weeks. It can be extremely difficult to try to stop smoking when you're constantly hanging out with people that smoke. The smell alone gives you the craving for one.

But, so far nothing in this life has determined that we'll get a second chance, so, pardon the expression, but YOLO, right? If it's something you've learned to coexist well with, and you aren't feeling a lot of impact from it in your life, i'd say, yeah, keep on puffing dead dried burnt leafs.

You're the only one that can make that call. I know i'm going to quit, definitely.

[–]SgtRimjob1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Everything in moderation. I work in health care and you wouldn't believe how many marathon running health nuts tend to have just as many problems as obese alcoholics. The healthiest people are the average ones who enjoy the occasional outlet.

I could see the benefits of smoking if you have one every now and then to destress or wake up. However, 7-10/day is doing way more harm than good. Putting aside the inevitable short and long term physical effects, the mental addiction and constant compulsive need for that immediate satisfaction are detrimental to RP lifestyle. You should get smoking out of your regular routine.

Try running and/or working out. You won't want to smoke anymore after you struggle through a long run, along with the endorphins and other immediate effects filling that stimulus gap. Plus sweating and speeding up your metabolism will "flush" your body quicker of the nicotine. The first week or so will suck, but push through and it's easy.

[–]Red-Zen1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You have an addiction. Some chemical substance has its control over you.

It show's a lack of self control, and a lack of respect/care for your own health.
