If there is a lull in your conversation, try using, "So what keeps you busy during the week?" I said that to a girl over the weekend and she laughed. She said she liked that way of phrasing the question, "So what do you do?"

GOD NO QUESTIONS, only statements, " you seem pretty tired" is better then are you tired ? now you gotta watch yourself and not over do it, cause you don't want the girl bitching that your completely wrong about her and keep making your opinion of others when they aren't like that, as a fix for that you can add "maybe" in your phrases, "maybe" is not a bad word, it invokes mystery "maybe you need some rest" is all good, because she's allowed to say "no" without fighting you off. You should never tell maybe as a reply that is meant to be taken serious if you get asked a question, example: girl: will you be at my house at 5 ?
guy: maybe? that's bad that's a lack of confidence, and most of the time resonates "no". however if its to defend yourself it's good girl: why did you not call me at 7 guy: maybe I did not feel like talking to you =P

I think the best thing here is to not have a general 'go-to' question, for the most part they don't exist. It's all based on context, make it personal. For instance if you just got out of class with someone ask about something that just happened in class.

Also if you've talked to them before there's probably something that you can recall to bring back up. This shows you care and are thoughtful and since they've previously mentioned it you know they are interested in it too regardless if they are actually interested in you at this point. If you share enough interests eventually they'll get confused and think you're one of them.

"So what's new and good?"

I only use this type of question with people I've talked to before and I usually bust it out after the initial "Hey, what's up?" crap that seems to go down at the beginning of each conversation. It's a great way to get launched into a conversation because most people will come up with something, even if it's trivial like, "I finally finished this book I've been reading for forever!" (Actually gotten that one before) Whatever they say can be used to springboard into a thread about that topic and then you're off to the races. Unless they say, "Nothing", in which case you can just leave. Who wants to hang around someone who has absolutely nothing good going on in their lives? Not me!

Plus, if it turns out you're speaking to a magician, you can pretend to by psychic.

What will really engage someone is to ask an "appreciative inquiry" question.

The question will be along the lines of "What's something that has happened recently that was most exciting for you?" or "Can you remember a time when you felt the happiest?"

The basic purpose of the question is to get the other person on the track of thinking about something that excited them, or made them happy, or made them feel positive emotions. You're getting them to talk about and appreciate a positive experience that they had.

Contrast that with what you don't want to ask: "what was the most boring experience you've had?" or "How frustrating has your week been so far?" You can see that the resulting response will have negative feelings attached to it.

If you feel comfortable getting into sexual conversation with someone, you could ask something like "what was the best kiss you've ever had? What about that made it so good?" or "can you remember a time when you felt the most incredible pleasure in your body?" Stuff like that.
