From Saturday night

Approach #1:

Three girls at a high-top table. All attractive. Laughing together. One has a birthday tiara on. Energy was high.

My Approach: I walked over with my drink. "Hey, I'm going to guess which one of you is the birthday girl."

I looked at all three, pointed at the one NOT wearing the tiara. "It's you."

They laughed. The birthday girl said, "Um, no, it's me. Obviously."

What I Did: I went into teasing mode. "Oh, so you're the one. You know, you don't look like a birthday girl. You look like you're about to go to bed." (Cocky/funny, straight face).

I turned to the other girls and used the "you're my friend" frame. "Girls, your friend here is a little high maintenance, isn't she? I can tell."

The kind of just stared at me with dead eyes. The vibe shifted a little maybe

I tried to bring it back. "Alright, I'm just messing with you. Happy birthday. I'm going to go find my friends." (End it first.)

Birthday girl said, "Okay, bye." Very cold.

DeAngelo Technique Used: Teasing, group approach, friendship frame, end it first.

Approach #2: The Smoker Outside

The Set: A woman in her late 20s, smoking outside the bar. Dressed casually. Glasses. Alone. She looked like she needed a light but was just standing there.

My Approach: I walked outside, pulled out my torch lighter (remembering the PDF story). I walked up, lit my own cigarette, then said, "Hey, you need a light?"

She said, "Oh, yeah, thanks." I lit her cigarette with the fancy lighter. She noticed. "Wow, that's a crazy lighter."

What I Did: I launched into the cold reading line from the PDF. "You know, I can already tell something about you."

She raised an eyebrow. "Oh yeah? What's that?"

"You're one of those people who is really interesting, but you don't think you are. You probably have this whole inner world that nobody really knows about." (The "secretly sensitive" cold read from the book.)

She took a long drag and looked at me and said something like 'it's not that deep' and said something about it being a pickup line lol. I laughed it off.

We talked for another minute. I tried to be "mysterious" and not give direct answers. She asked what I do. I said, "I do a lot of things. I'm more interested in what YOU do." (Turn it around.)

She smiled. Then her friend came out, grabbed her, and said something about the 'hot Barman' who I guess the friend thought was hot

The girl said, "Oh, okay. Nice meeting you!" and literally ran off. Her friend yanked her away.

DeAngelo Technique Used: Prop (fancy lighter), cold reading, direct/evasive conversation.

Approach #3: The Girl at the Table with Friends

A girl, maybe 18, sitting with two friends. She was very attractive.

I walked up to the table and said, "Hey, I'm not trying to interrupt. But I noticed you from across the room and I had to find out what you were like." (The compliment opener from the PDF.)

She looked at me, confused. One of her friends said, "She's not interested. Bye"

I didn't back down. I used the arrogant/cocky recovery from the book. "Whoa, relax. I'm not trying to take her. I'm just being friendly. Are you always this protective?" (Turn it around, challenge)

She done the 'we're lesbians. bye' thing that girls do

I looked at her. "So, is she always this territorial, or is that just how you like them?" (Testing, staying in control.)

They just looked at each other

I said, "Alright, well, I'm going to go. You guys have a good night." (End it first.) I walked away before they could say anything.

DeAngelo Technique Used: Compliment opener, cocky/funny, stay in control, end it first.
