tl;dr: The approach means more than the reaction.

So I was sitting at a Starbucks when these three women walk in. They are clearly a group. One of them sits down while the other two order. I want to approach one of them, but I have never approached a group of three before. I cop out and leave the Starbucks. Filled with instant regret, I walk back in and open them with the line "Are you girls ballerinas?". It turned out they were. We chitchatted for a minute about where they perform and what they do. I get their names and shake their hands. Let's say their names are X, Y, and Z. X is the talkative one but Y is the one I want to get a number from. Z is silent. So after a minute or two I part ways from their table and go to order. When I come back I say to Y, "Hey Y, I think you are really cute---" she cuts me off and says "Umm no." She continues "Can you please go away?". X pipes in "Go away!" I walk off with my tail between my legs and no number.

Doesn't matter. I approached a girl and her two friends. That is a huge accomplishment for me. It is hard af to approach a girl, let alone approaching a group of three. So for me this was a success, regardless of how I was treated.

Lesson Learned: Push your boundaries and go for what you want. The minor butthurt from a mean girl's reaction is minimal compared to the accomplishment of approaching.
