I've improved my conversation skills a lot. I started out as below average.

Talk to anyone for practice, not just HB's, it's easier to learn without sexual tension. Collect a number of openers and re-starters. Re-starters are like openers, but for then the conversation has stalled. With practice you'll learn to improvise.

A conversation is like a dance, you make a move she makes a move you respond, she responds etc. You have to give your "partner" something to continue the conversation with. She has to do the same, and it's your job to pick it up and respond.

An ideal answer to a question will : 1 answer the question and 2 : add a new element to talk about. A general rule could be: answer with 2 lines, not with 1 line.

For example: she: "nice weather" you: "yea it is" WRONG.

she: "nice weather" you: "yea it is" "I'm so lucky I took a day off today" she: "starts babbling about time off, and looking around to see if she could take some time off" (day-game:Damn I forgot about that,I should visit her again)

Looking people in the eyes a lot is not natural for me, I developed an internal timer to remind me, and it's getting more natural.

Conversation stalled, you're standing in a group without talking, lots of environmental noise. Touch the person next to you on the lower arm/shoulder , and use a restarter.

Just practice listening. Listening is 90%. Ask the kind of questions that show you have been listening with interest, and then just sit back. You might say only 5 words, but people will say "Wow, it's been so great talking with you" or "It's been fun! You're a great conversationalist!"

Serious.

EDIT: Of course, you'll want to use open-ended questions to really get them talking.

I talk to myself in the shower. I go over different conversations during my week and break down the voice tone, body language, and words to better fit to my goals.

search this sub-reddit. This topic has come up quite a few times. You should find most of what you need there.

Also, I suggest you watch DJ Fuji's The 21 Convention talk from 2009 (or 2010, but I'm pretty sure it's 2009). In the last 10 minutes or so, he gives a couple of drills to work on getting better at improvising conversation topics in set, that have helped me out a bit. Between this and conversation threading, you should make vast strides in your ability to converse with others
