Is overdressing when going out good or bad?

Dress to the occasion, I know the true pua's say the more flamboyant the better. But you don't want to wear a suit to a back yard barbecue, u also don't want to blend in. I like how one commenter said they're almost always in a sports coat, I like that, it subtle enough where you don't look like you're over doing it, but sharp enough to say hey I got style and class. With that said I'm not wearing a sports coat to a brew pub.

You want style, just like anything a guy does for women you don't want to under or over do it. For example, confidence is great, over confidence/cocky is bad. Look sharp, dress sharp and look a little better than everyone there...not a lot.

There was a saying, I think, from the GQ style guy (or esquire) that it is better to be overdressed because it shows that you either came from or are going to somewhere more important/interesting/fancy. Basically along that idea. Like others are saying, better to standout by overdressing. Now take that, and make it a conversation.

I think you always want to be on the top end of the "niceness" scale of wherever you are going, but not off the scale. Example: If i'm going to a downtown bar - Yeah there will be guys there with basketball shorts and rock t-shirts on. I'm going to be wearing slacks and leather shoes, nice shirt. Be the sharpest dressed there. People are always subconsciously making value judgments on your clothes.

However, I don't put on a suit jacket and tie when i'm going to the same bar. Even though i'm sure i'll be the best dressed, you'll look like a choad. You wanna be one of the best dressed there, but not by a great margin.

Always better to err on being overdressed than underdressed.

One of my friends goes all out, but he does it to a T. That means perfectly trimmed hair, custom-fit designer suit, ironed shirt in the latest design, immaculate shoes, a slick watch, everything matching well, etc. He does it because he loves that shit, not because he's trying to get girls, and he looks damn good.

I would encourage you to try it, for fun. If it's not you though, then it's not you.

The type of bait you use depends on the type of fish you want to catch. Think about what kind of woman you want to attract and wear the kind of outfit she would expect you to wear in that venue.

If you're going for the girl that's always the best dressed in whatever room she's in, you should be too. If you want a casual, down-to-earth girl, she's going to think you're vain if you're over-dressed, so you'll want to keep it casual too.

Or just wear whatever the fuck you want to wear. You're allowed to have your own preferences.

Overdressed can easily be bad. Say, suit at a barbecue. You look, obviously, socially retarded but also arrogant.

That said, it's nearly impossible to be overdressed at a nightclub with a doorman. Strike that, in the United States. (Some bohemian European clubs loathe ANYONE in even a button down, sometimes, that's an exception).

Eh, I lost my train of thought. Actually, you can certainly overdo the dressing up part, like if you wore a tuxedo to some place -- you'd just look like a stiff.

But you can get away with a notch or two above the average populace.

Look, a blazer and jeans is fine everywhere. Suit? At a decent club, sure, but don't make it a boring charcoal suit. "Fun" it up ... ostentatious belt, alligator shoes, flamboyant pocket square, loud shirt + tie. Or wear a white jacket (or shiny jacket). This makes you look less serious but still like an 'elite asshole' if you get my drift. And you stand out.

In the summer I wear a white seersucker blazer to the bars and people love it. I feel better and look better and people react. Frankly I don't wear full suits, because, well, it sucks to wear a full suit when you don't have to. And I hate wearing anything too expensive that might get booze spilled on it.

I used to dress exactly like you did, and then I updated my clothing choice to nice looking, but slightly more casual (nice T shirts and henley shirts), with slim cut or straight cut jeans of like 10 colors.

Instantly I started getting compliments from friends at parties saying that they love my new "look" and that I look so much more relaxed and at ease.

If you know the place and know how the majority of the people there dress, I'd say dress a little nicer than the usual crowd but nothing more. That way you stand out in a positive way, without coming across as unapproachable or tryhard. I'd say vests, ties and the whole nine yards are a bit too much and make you stand out in a (possibly) bad way, but that's just me.

IMO it's much more about how the clothes fit than the clothes you wear. Of course, it depends on the event. Don't go to a formal event in jeans and a t-shirt. I've done very well some nights wearing just shorts and a v-neck. The clothes fit like they're supposed to, so I looked good.

It probably depends a bit on your age, your build, and your ability to wear clothes properly... But I'll say that weather permitting, I'm almost always in a sportcoat.

You want to match the formality of the event, but maximize your style.

Also, there are cultural norms for how much you dress up or down. I won't get into it cuz it's kind of depressing to hash out, but basically pay attention to how people of your own ethnicity dress.
