Holding eyecontact can show confidence. Staring someone down is being a douchebag. Prolonged eyecontact is an indicator of autism. They are initially afraid of eyecontact and are taught to make it, but don't understand how to mete it.

A lot of crossover between red pill "alpha" douches and autism. If you don't know how to interact in society, it's better to temper your interaction than take it to an extreme like this.

This is just another example of people with no confidence trying to figure out how a person with confidence would act.

If Jay-Z walked into a club, he would make eye contact with people because he's fucking Jay-Z and he's not afraid of anybody or intimidated by anybody, especially girls.

However, Jay-Z would certainly NOT walk into a club thinking "let me make eye contact and make them break it first to show my 'social dominance' because it's 'fun'." Confident people don't waste their time thinking about how to be socially dominant - they just ARE.

Just because a person breaks eye contact doesn't mean that they're passive. Some people scout shit out. Holding eye contact too long can be viewed as hostile behavior. You can't go around constantly in the social dominance mode. Not everyone is out trying to be the alpha male and meet girls. Most people honestly don't give a shit. Most people quickly glance away when making eye contact with a person. It isn't because they're passive, but because they're trying to learn about that person if they're interested. View eye contact with a girl as a playful, flirty gesture. Simply a game of cat and mouse with the eyes till you approach. Conversation wise use this to determine her interest in you. If a girl can't hold eye contact with you when you're talking to her, chances are you are not drawing interest from her.

Staying in this mindset is dangerous. Be able to pull yourself in and out. Don't let it consume you.

Just watch out who you look in the eye actually. I've read one tip some time ago to acknowledge the person with "hi", "What's up?", smile or something like that. In UK I've heard that "what's up" is thrown left and right so that's probably it, in other countries something other must work.

Almost a year back I remember this one situation. A guy typical white gangsta/ kid of the street wanna-be looked at me and I looked at him as I was standing in the empty corridor of subway entrance in the daytime. Our eyes met and he just walked past me. When he looked back after a few meters He just stopped, turned around and looked at me again (I looked his direction because I was waiting for someone). Our eyes met once again and he proceeded with a bit challenging/ kind of dominant "You want something?" to which I replied just "no, I don't" in a non-threatening way. That's it, noone got hurt.

While I never did so extreme version of it to stare down everybone I can say this helped me much with eye contact since it was non-existent back then.

I agree with the comments there are two different eye contacts. One is staring at them like a douche. And the second one is holding eye with a hint of sexyness and you should know when to do what.

I understand everyone's fear of douchery here, but it really does work as a confidence booster. You don't have to make hard eye contact or appear threatening. Just stare as though you're genuinely curious. This whole eye contact staring thing comes from the Book Demian, which is a must read foranyone who struggles with insecurity.
