Your idea of tango is in the right vein, but probably a little too far into the realm of "serious business" partner dancing for what you're looking for. It's an amazing dance and about as pure of a lead-follow connection as you can get, but requires both partners to be very much engaged in the dance and has a steep learning curve. (Like, you-will-have-to-relearn-how-to-walk steep.) If you adapted tango so that it was easier for beginners to pick up, sprinkled in a bit of swing dancing and hip-hop, and did it to non-tango music...you'd end up with blues dancing. :-)

I go to bars all the time, and have been to a handful of clubs, and I've literally never seen any real dancing. It's always grinding, in some form or another. I don't really know what it was like with this girl, but if she's basically facing you, get real close to her, put your hands on her hips or around her back a bit (or just one arm around the back while the other's swaying or up in the air), and just kinda move to the music. That's all I do- and it's what most people do, because most people haven't taken formal dance lessons (especially if they're younger than like 25).

You don't really need to "know" how to dance if you're not at a place where real dancing is happening. But you do need to have some rhythm. Sometimes I just watch what the girl's doing and mirror her movements a bit, other times I basically just stand there and let her do all the work.

I will say though, it can be good to have a general knowledge of the song that's on, because the moves might change up when it gets to the chorus, or when there's some random beat that comes out of nowhere (it's not too important, but I've been in a ton of situations where the girl knows what's about to happen so she dips down all of a sudden and basically bumps against me cuz I didn't realize that part was coming up. And a lot of girls like to sing along to shit, so I'm just sort of standing there nodding my head while she's expecting me to be singing with her. Fuck that shit).

Learn salsa. It's hugely popular and it's only growing. All over the world. There are many Latin styles of dance which are close relatives: merengue, bachata, cumbia, rueda, etc. giving you an arsenal that you can use nearly anywhere in the world.

I've recently gone salsa dancing with some female friends, they are good and apparently I am too for a beginner. Fucking awesome way to dance with a girl. Its all about hip movement and you get to lead her and spin her (I was in Brazil for 6 months and picked up some spinning aspects of salsa from a similar style of Brazilian dance).

You don't really want to learn a set dance routine or something that serious because she may not know it, not be comfortable with it, or it can just come off awkward.

If she's facing you directly (body facing you) it is definitely an IOI. Make sure it's her body though. Lot of people spin their heads around checking people out on the dancefloor, but just because she's near you and looks at you doesn't mean she wants to dance with you. If she turns and is facing you head on, go for it.

As far as the dancing itself, honestly I think it's easier now than ever. As long as you have rhythm and are smoothly moving to be beat, you're good. The reason I saw it's easier than ever is because there doesn't seem to be any really complicated "cool" moves or really simple "stupid" moves that are common. I guess what I mean is you look at a dance like the Dougie. That looks really similar to what Carlton on Fresh Prince was always doing, but back then if you did that, you were seen as just as lame as him. So basically, use your hips, bend your knees, rock your shoulders, and just move to the rhythm. Keep in mind you can pull off just about anything with a smile on your face.

But back to the girl. So she's facing you, get closer. When you're on the verge of stepping on her feet, if she's still making eye contact and facing you, time to start kino. Start by putting a hand on her hip and see how she responds.

The only good "traditional" move I know, that is pretty much imbedded in all girls is the twirl. You're holding her hand, you raise it up and scoot away from her a little. She knows what to do. You pull it off right and it realigns the way you're arms are so that you're in a position to pull her in closer.

I agree with comments about Salsa, but a couple other dance types are "Night club swing" or "Hustle" - which is 90% of club music (like Katy Perry or Lady Gaga). Hustle gets a bad rap for being "Disco" - but at the end of the night, chicks love disco.

Cha Cha is pretty cool in the club too.

I've been taking dance lessons for about 6 months, focusing first on Swing, Hustle, Rhumba and Salsa... But have done a bit of Cha Cha, & Tango.. once you learn the basics, you can really go out and enjoy it.

I went to a party a couple of months ago with a Beatles cover band. My friend is a pretty good dancer, and we started cutting the rug... our space widened, and we were really rocking it; people were looking at us like "I wish I could dance like that..." and a lot of my friends said to me after: "Jeez, I had no Idea you could dance like that..." They were pretty blown away... all for a couple hundred bucks in lessons, and some time.

Go for it; dance is one of the best investments you can make for yourself.

Forget dance that is too technical and out of place with most western venues. You want to stick with dance that is done in 4/4. Latin music has an odd pulse, blues is in 12/8. Don't worry about the numbers if you don't understand music. Just feel the difference between dancing to them.

Unless you're really into blues and latin music, just stick with moves you see on seventies disco videos. Think James Brown, Michael Jackson, even robot dancing lol.

The reason we aren't dancing waltzes (3/4 time signature) in ballrooms any more is because they went out of favour seventy years ago. These days we imitate assholes in hip-hop music videos and the latest vapid brainless slut who sucked a mile of cock to get the label boss to chuck 20k at a music video to satisfy the desperate craving of her ego led existence. /cynic

tl;dr - just move from left to right and copy the dickheads on MTV
