No theory, but my experience: recently divorced and getting rid of the ring & ring tan line improved my ability with women 1000000%
However, I go for women mostly in mid 20's, who still think the idea of hooking up with a married guy is skeevy. To the point of some being sketched when they found out I was separated, even though I had my own place and the divorce paperwork was filed.
I've hooked up with some girls in their 30s too, and they were pretty much the same, except more accepting of the separation deal. A few were off put by the recent divorce, since they knew I'd be playing the field for awhile.
The other reason I don't use it is that I run exceedingly honest game. I tell women that I'm not looking for an exclusive relationship, and I answer most of their questions. It works for me, to the point where I can have 3 regular partners at one time. Using a prop like a wedding ring would upset that balance.
Maybe it will work with women in their 40's, but in my target demographic, in my experience, it is a game killer.
upvoted the thread. I don't think it's effective, but I think it is a good discussion to have. I think there is too much petty downvoting in Seddit.
[–]new_player 9 points10 points11 points 15 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Agreed, the downvoting is hilarious. It's as though there are some people around who are entirely anti-seduction just running around hitting downvote as fast as they can.
[–]MrRisky 7 points8 points9 points 15 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, I think that's the case. Either some bitter AFC, a jilted boyfriend or a few yetis from TwoX.
It's not like I want this shit on the frontpage or anything, but if interesting threads get downvoted before they can take off, this /r/ is practically useless.
[–]ymrhawk 8 points9 points10 points 15 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
a few yetis from TwoX.
Most likely
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yah, one would have to be some kind of yeti to disagree with you; you're just THAT agreeable.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
a few yetis from TwoX
sigh :( (male here)
[–]mitigateaccomp 8 points9 points10 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Let me clarify; Yetis are often classified as being big, hairy, and mean. What the above comments were doing was likening the people that frequent the /r/TwoXChromosomes (twoX for short), which is mainly made up of women (I would assume not having any statistics in front of me.), to that of a yeti.
The above comments were trying to associate the negative qualities of the yeti to that of the women on twoX. Which, albeit quiet sexist, is still rather comical.
I hope this has cleared up any ambiguity you may have had when responding to their post.
I´m imagining a large hairy beast with a grimace and horns wearing a purple dress hunched over a computer, eating a very large container of haagen das ice cream.

He said 'Yetis from twoX', not 'twoX are yetis'.

The kind of girls who will sleep with a married man are the kind of girls I don't wanna sleep with, generally.
Then that's more likely to be the issue than the ring. I find the kind of girls that gets freaked out by a ring are the kind of girls I want to stay well clear of because what they're after clearly isn't what I'm after (a casual hook up with someone who won't go around thinking it can ever become anything else).
I think for a discussion like this, goals / what you're looking for matters a lot.

Slutty isn't a bad thing in my book, and I couldn't care less about "dateable potential" - I'm not looking to date them. But I don't agree - I've seen no pattern at all in appearance and behaviour of girls that don't care about a ring, and I have seen a number of cases where it definitively helps. More than one girl have confessed that the thought of being "the other woman" turns them one, for starters, and several others have confessed that they like it because it guarantees to them that they don't have to worry about me looking for a relationship when they just want fun.

I am married. Open relationship. And I've had a reasonably number of women over the years I've been married and engaged (I wore the wedding band as an engagement ring, so in total I've been wearing the ring for 9 years).
but when I actually had the ring on none of them must have been brave enough to try.
Brave enough to try what? You're the one that should be leading; they shouldn't have to be brave enough to try anything.
The way I see it, whether it's the ring or me telling them I'm married, the main purpose for me is to make sure they don't get any illusions about things I have no interest in offering them.
I don't know whether it overall makes things easier or not - if it does it's not a massive effect. I do know that some of the girls I meet claim it makes them more interested, but then again I also know some girls get less interested.

I like your answer. Upvote to reverse the trend.
[–]lyingit 12 points13 points14 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I'd think the amount of gals that would be turned off by the idea that you were a cheating husband would outnumber the ones that would be turned on.
I've been hit on a few times while out (I'm married) but I'll tell you this, the gals hitting on me because I'm married are basically what I would equate to bar flies.
[–]Krieger9 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think quite a few will hit on you with the ring hoping to assert some sense of quality when they can grab his attention but they never plan on following through.
Well rarely. The married cheating ones may be interested.

The overall math is irrelevant. In any sort of marketing, when you define your targets, you also define your non-targets. If wearing a ring helps him attract the kind of girls he's targeting, then the fact that it turns the rest off is a bonus; it saves him time by quickly disqualifying the non-targets. As you get better at defining your targets, you want more instant-qualifiers like this.

I'm not married but I wear a ring that happens to look like a wedding ring. I wear it in my right hand and I've had mostly positive experiences. I don't wear it to pickup girls but it's a conversation starter and a DHV. They almost always ask me about it. Usually I simply say I'm not married, it's just a ring. Sometimes I evade the question and change subject. This can be really fun if done well. Sometimes I say I'm married and got 5 kids, etc. And then sometimes I'll change fingers to avoid questions. I'm still experimenting with it.
For what's worth, I'm in Japan. Your mileage may vary.
[–]MrRisky 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
upvoted Thanks for sharing your experiences. This is exactly what Seddit should be about.
I'm actually thinking of getting a plain titanium band for my right hand because I miss being able to open beer bottles with it.
[–]FearDrow_TrustDrizzt 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
How do you open bottles with a plain band? I could google, but I prefer the conversational exchange. Thanks in advance.
[–]MrRisky 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It's hard to explain, but I'll give it a go.
Hold the bottle in the non ring hand.
Point the ring hand with fingers up towards the sky.
Wedge the top lip of the ring under the cap
Wrap the ring finger over the top of the cap, while keeping the lip of the ring firmly wedged under the cap.
Lift your hand up to cause your ring finger to act as a lever. Keep it close to the bottle so that the ring stays wedged under the cap.
Cap should pop off.
Now, this actually can hurt like a son-of-a-bitch. If you do it once, people will want to see you do it again, and your finger will get sore by the 4th bottle or so. Also, if you slip you can scrape your hand pretty good against the crimps on the cap. Still, it's worth it IMHO.
[–]FearDrow_TrustDrizzt 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thank you. I think I have the imagery.
Trick for you from me, a waiter.
Warning: this only works with twist offs! Take the bottle. Hold upright and place cap into fatty portion of non-dominant hand's forearm. It will be the underside 2 inches toward the wrist from the elbow. Push cap another 1/4 inch into skin. Twist in correct direction. This works great and if you do it right doesn't hurt, but I have scars from doing it repeatedly on a drunken night.
Pro-tip: for non-twistoffs, take a lighter (butt end) and place under opposite side of cap. Wedge it good. Now, place non-dominant hand over total system so nothing (lighter or bottle) is mobile. Finally, press down with dominant hand on ignitor end of lighter whilst holding system still. This is hard, and will scar lighter, but in a bind it gets the job done. May have to do it twice on the same cap.
Carabiners work as well.

I used to work with two different men, one put a wedding ring on to pick up chicks and the other took his off to do the same thing. When I was married I almost felt like it definitely felt different as if it had some kind of psychological/symbolic power. What I'm getting at: it's all about state of mind.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I asked my girlfriend about this subject the other day as we were looking at engagement rings and she said that at least for her, she is more receptive talking to a married man because she assumes that his intentions are not immediately to get in her pants, but if he would to try hitting on her, her repulsion to him would be much worse then a normal guy
[–]Khatam 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree. I don't find sleeping with a man just because he's married attractive, in fact quite the opposite. Flirting with me with a ring on will probably make me give you the "did someone poop in here? what's that smell?" face.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Well, my buddy had a ring trick that he would use to moderate success. He would walk around the room and keep introducing himself to the women in the room and would 'propose' to them at some point in the conversation and would give then a little 25 cent wedding ring. By the end of the night, most of the women would have rings on their fingers and he would have given the entire party an easy way to remember him by. What he ended up doing is NOT giving the ring to the women he was actually attracted to. Thus, they felt that his attention was valuable and they started qualifying to him. You can also stage little mini-divorces as a slight neg. It's a really fun way to run game on an entire room.
[–]diamond29 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
This is kind of weird. How old is your friend?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, he doesn't do it anymore, but it worked for him in high-school.
That is bold and inventive.
[–]philosarapter 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I do this, but instead of little rings, I use beads. And all of them have to earn it.

It can work, but it depends on the weight of the girl and the harness that she is sitting in. You simply attach the harness to the ring, and then attach the ring to the lifting device. However, if the ring is gold, you will find that the metal is somewhat soft and will bend easily when you pick them up, even though it won't break due to the weight.

Maybe I'm idealistic but I have zero interest in women who would date a married guy, and I have zero interest in being untruthful to pick up women.
I was married for two years, wore a ring, but didn't try to meet women romantically during that time and didn't have any Costanza-like experience of women throwing themselves at me because of my ring. Have had plenty of success since then without relying on gimmicks. Improve your value by actually becoming a higher value person!
