Lately, I’ve been inviting people out for bubble tea as a first date. It’s simple and relaxed, but I’ve noticed I’m not getting many second dates. Most of the time, we end up sitting across from each other and just going through the usual questions like what we do for work, hobbies, and general small talk. It can start to feel a bit like an interview.

Aside from a quick hello or goodbye hug, there’s usually no physical connection, and the interaction stays pretty formal.

That said, I’ve had a different experience in the past. I once took two people I really liked skating as a first or second date during winter. Since we were moving around and a bit more active, there was more natural interaction, including some hand holding, while still having conversations. In both cases, those dates eventually turned into relationships. It’s a small sample, but the outcome was 100% successful for me.

Now I’m wondering what other people typically do for first or second dates that help create a better connection. I live in a suburban area, so getting around usually involves driving or public transport.

Would love to hear what kinds of date activities you’ve found work well early on.
