How does one balance their self improvement with seduction?

I keep reading that like attracts like: meaning that if you're a 10, you'll attract a 10, and if you're a needy chode, you'll attract a similar girl.

The natural conclusion is to simply wait until you're a 10 yourself to begin looking for a girlfriend.

On the other hand, you need to be dating a shit ton of women in order to find out who you're most compatible with. So...how do you justify dating someone when you're still in a state of evolving as a man?

Sorry this is a bit esoteric, but I'm having trouble rationalizing these seemingly-conflicting paradigms.
