Have met with and been in the presence of many eagle scouts. My father was one. All extraordinary men, skilled, and well spoken. These skills are retained for life with a sense of pride and accomplishment, and rightfully so. I barely made it to Life Scout as I was moving a lot from 15-18, but I probably could have made it had I applied myself more. Had something like 20 badges and I remember going to all the events as well. I always wish I could go back and achieve that Eagle rank, what an honor. It has gotten my father instant raises, and respect at work at high ranking corporate jobs and even small companies. Eagle rank on a resume is something you can carry for life to show you are a distinguished individual from even a young age.
This boy in the picture will grow to be a fantastic man and a prize. The woman in the picture will never understand this and sees no value in it. Good, she doesn't deserve a champion like this.

Not all eagles. I worked with the bsa for three years (any other Charlie guides on here?) and met a lot of eagles who had done shit projects and gotten the title anyways because their parents knew someone. To say nothing of the mormon scout troops (before the mormons left scouting because they allowed women and gay men to participate) who were well known for forcing all their kids through the eagle program wether they deserved it or not.
I have still met some amazing young men who i expect will change the world one day. Like the young man who was building a horse barn for kids with disabilities, at 17 he's telling me how hes sourcing lumber through donations, and he'd already raised ten grand on top of that to pay for carpenters.

I had a friend who was a boy scout (when it was still the boyscouts). He got eagle scout at like 19 (and he was in since like 7, it took a long time and he needed to learn and demonstrate a lot of shit). That shit has gotten him jobs and salaries that people who aside from eagle scout, had the same credentials but couldn't dream of getting. It's even got him out of tickets and a few other perks. That's because people value hard work and dedication, and that's the epitome of eagle scouts (and I was never even in boyscouts but I can see that). Really man? Maybe I live in the wrong state and/or I don’t tell people about it enough. I’m an Eagle but I haven’t gotten anything notable that wasn’t purely verbal. I wanted to join the military and get in at a higher rank due to my eagle status, but unfortunately they wouldn’t let me join because I had asthma medication prescribed like, 3 years earlier. I waited 9 months after getting a 92% on a PFT (pulmonary function test) just to hear ‘no’. In that case, being honest about my medical history (honesty being a tenant in the scout law) fucked me over.
Then there’s my current job as an electrician apprentice, and while I’ve been doing well, (been at this for almost a year not counting the quarantine) they haven’t given me anything tangible for being an eagle. The most I’ve ever really gotten is verbal praise and some respect, something I always appreciate.
I’m not saying I regret it, not at all, but for me, being an eagle has always been something that was far more impactful on me as a person than impactful on people around me. (From what I’ve seen at least)

Yeah, I don't want to doxx my buddy but he got his degree in criminal justice. He got a state job (benefits, even a pension if he sticks with it) at nearly double what his peers got out of school. He attributes it to his boyscouts credentials, but it could very well be for many other reasons even just been sheer luck. He also got caught going 85 on the freeway in a 65 zone one time, and "accidentally" handed the officer his eagle scout card instead of his ID, in the ends of ends he just got a warning and went on his way after reminiscing over boyscout shit. I've personally seen him talk up other boyscouts at bars and shit and they give him discounts left and right. It's not a golden ticket for everyone necessarily (and probably doesn't compare much to say military service), but from what I've personally seen it can definitely come in handy and put you ahead of others if you know how/when to bring it up and use it to your advantage without coming across as arrogant or self-righteous/entitled.
Admittedly, this phenomenon seems to be fading, and the boyscouts are becoming more bastardized and less credible more and more each passing year in the name of affirmative action and a few bad apples.

I was looking back at car prices back in the 60s/70s, how much it cost back then compared to how much people earned, and thinking about how many hours a teenager would have had to work in order to buy themselves a new car then to customize it, etc. I remembermany teenagers having cars, spending lots of time cleaning them in the driveways, fixing them, and so forth.
