There wasn't even any "science" in mind when it was done to me. When I was a few months old, according to my mother, my father announced that I was going to be circumcised. My mother tried to talk him out of it, saying that no one in her family had it done to him. My father apparently said "Well, that's you guys. I'm circumcised, so are my father and my brother". I've never seen either of my grandfathers' penises, and I've never even met my father's older brother, whom I presume he meant, much less seen the man's penis. I don't think I've even seen a photograph of him.

When I think about it, considering I was born premature, and it wasn't done immediately, my father must have been waiting for me to get stronger. Even not taking into account how I might feel about it as an adult (which he obviously didn't), could he not have had some compassion for a tiny little baby? I've seen shitloads videos of baby boys having this procedure inflicted upon them, and they disgust me. If I feel protective towards a child I don't even know, then how could my father do that to me?

The youngest thinks that it's fucked up. When I told him that the only reason he has a normal penis is that my father couldn't afford to have him mutilated, he was appalled. He then tried to make excuses for my father, saying that coming from another country, maybe he didn't know any better. I told him that considering my father had lived in England for 16 years by the time I was born, that's bullshit. He knew what was what. My youngest brother also said that given our father imparted almost none of his culture to us growing up (I don't care, my brother does), it's bizarre that he'd go ahead with the cultural mutilation. I said that "culture" is an excuse, it's really about his ego.

My youngest-but-one brother once made a joke that nearly made be punch him in the face. I was at my parents' house, preparing a meal, and I was peeling some vegetables. Trying to be a funny cunt, he made some remark about me and the brother who is closest in age to me being circumcised with one of those peelers. I stopped what I was doing, and walked out of the house. My mother told me that she spoke to him about it, and that he's sorry.

I haven't discussed it with the only one of my brothers who was mutilated because we just aren't that close.

As an infant I was circumcised by a Rabbi in accordance with Jewish doctrine. I certainly think in this day and age, the practice is completely unnecessary, and persists from some religious overlap for jews/muslims and dubious science for others. Every time I have this kind of discussion I am shocked to hear how late into life this is performed on others, and how sloppily it is done as well...I don't have a ragged scar and I certainly don't remember it happening, and I feel badly for others who did not have a similar experience. I have no intentions of having my potential future son(s) circumcised either, it seems like a pointless procedure except in very specific situations--and even then based on what I've read it should still be viewed as a last ditch effort.

With that being said I don't think it is entirely fair to compare male circumcision with something like female genital mutilation. I understand that feminism is an extreme position and so we must respond with equally extreme positions, but the scope of the comparison is just so large. I get the same feeling every time someone invokes the Nazi comparison in every. single. political. debate. and it really doesn't do much to further the cause of mens rights IMO.

Anyway not even sure why I posted here, but the article and thread struck a chord with me and I guess I just wanted you all to know I support most of what is said here and I hope we can hold ourselves to a higher standard than our detractors, even it seems unfair and stupid to do so.

Firstly, I refuse to use the word "circumcision". I call it what it is - male genital mutilation. Notice how much of an outcry female genital mutilation (female "circumcision") received, and how much more rare it is in most modern countries. Most sources I've seen say that FGM is far worse than MGM but either way, it's genital mutilation and neither is okay.

However, I was circumcised young too. Honestly, I won't lie - I think I prefer not having foreskin (aesthetically and maybe functionally speaking). But I still get pissed off every time I look down there. It just makes me think that I went under surgery without any say or choice in the matter. I had a part of me removed that I'll never get back. Foreskin is known to be much more sensitive than the rest of the penis, and I'll never know what it's like to have.

So I don't think it should be downright illegal, but classify it as cosmetic surgery, if anything (there are a few situations where it might be necessary for medical reasons, especially if it's at a high risk for getting infected.

So what if it's easier to clean? By that logic we should cut off anything that protrudes from the body. Teach proper hygiene instead and stop stigmatizing it instead. Let people make the choice for themselves when they get to the age of consent, and try to remove the stigma surrounding it all. It's not like it really makes a huge difference functionally even, as far as I understand, the foreskin basically just slides back and stays mostly out of the way, regardless.
