When my son was born I questioned the reasoning for the doctor's suggesting (almost demanding) he be circumcised. They only said it was customary and that it was easier to clean. When I said it didn't seem like a good idea, they seemed taken aback. They made me feel like an idiot for not wanting to traumatize my boy and stressed the importance of doing the procedure as soon as possible. The pressure put on new parents to cut away part of the male genitalia is very disturbing. It's genital mutilation, plain and simple. I think it's seen in the medical field as a good way for new docs to practice a procedure with relatively little risk. What is the purpose if not religion?

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

$ is the purpose.

Scalpel happy doctors.

[–]BrSy 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yep, pretty much this. As a medical student from Northern Europe, the way American healthcare works is absolutely disgusting for me. The amount of useless and even harmful procedures done there just to milk the $$$ is enormous.

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I worked in a rural hospital for a bit and the conditions and practices were absolutely abhorrent.

[+]MitchCinderblock points 9 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

What about where there's free health care ?

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not widely practiced in those places.

[–]TommyK154 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The funny thing is when this happens to genitalia mutilation happens to women everyone gets up in arms and the UN loses its mind over the inhumanity. But no one gives a fuck when it happens to men coz it's "normal". There's no good reason to even do this. Wash your dick more than once a month and there's no problems. Not having a natural piece of your dick cut off because thousands of years ago some dudes made up a bunch of stories and said you should cut your children's forskin off to show g-d you love him shouldn't be the "weird" option

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

But no one gives a fuck when it happens to men coz it's "normal".

Which is stupid, because it's "normal" where girls are being mutilated. So by the same standards of normalcy and acceptance, even down to the false justifications it's not any different.

We act so morally superior to the "barbarians" who mutilate little girls, but then we do it to our boys without any issue. No different at all. Women do it to their daughters, women say they prefer it, like it better, have no problems with it. Claim it's cleaner, claim it's safer, feels better, looks better, all of it.

Mutilating children's genitals is disgusting, period. It's really not hard to hold that opinion. Yet, people struggle.

If you're an adult and want to do it to yourself, more power to you. It's your body. But leave children alone.

edit; I'm reminded of some female politician that tweeted a picture of a mutilated 'girl' bleeding after the mutilation and about how horrible it was, and how it was terrible... except, the picture was of a boy. Oops. You got tricked into caring about a boy that was mutilated in the third world and bleeding for no reason.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Sure are a lot of people supporting baby torture in here.

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I find it absurd that men advocate for the violation of mens rights.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I blame ideological subversion.

The counter arguments are so weak:

It doesn't serve a purpose besides sexual stimulation/lubrication.

Even if this was true, which of course it's not, if their logic is going to remain consistent they have to include that they also support the removal of the clitoris since that actually does only serve the sole purpose of stimulation.

They're too young to remember the trauma to it's okay.

I won't even get into the can of worms that that opens up because it's disgusting.

[–]0908908909089 17 points18 points19 points 9 years ago* (15 children) | Copy Link

That we even need to specify this or have a discussion around it says everything.

What would we do if it were girls? Are we a honest culture?

When they say "clean" they mean "sexually pure." Anyone who tells you it is easier to clean is a lying low-level intelligence (easier than the normal penis you would have cleaned had yours not been mutilated, but which you never had so can't compare with any honesty? so it's easier to clean, according to you, than something you by definition never experienced? Is there anything else you'd like to lie about while you have the floor?). Even Rabbis will admit they mean "clean" as in sexually pure. It's no different than cutting off a clit. That woman will be sexually clean and will no longer seek sex (pure). What's what clean is. How is this going over your heads? Codefied language. It's politics, it's feminism, it's everything. Dogwhistling. Denotative vs. connotative.

Why was the other post hidden? What the fuck... It's incredibly hard to respect people who support this under the guise of my heritage, when most of them were probably converts and are connected to the heritage through name only.

[+]Ovedya2011 -11 points-10 points-9 points 9 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

It's no different than cutting off a clit

Unless there's a new form of curcumcision in which the practitioner cuts the head off a child's penis, yes, it is.

[–]Foregen_Is_Life 20 points21 points22 points 9 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

There are 20,000 nerve endings in the foreskin. There are only 8,000 in the clitoris. Do some research. Also, try reading the article.

[–]SaiHottari 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Here, you dropped the mic.

[+]Ovedya2011 -9 points-8 points-7 points 9 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

I see, so then your argument is that cutting off a clitoris is less important than cutting off foreskin?

[–]SaiHottari 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

No, he was making a point that your point was wrong. Cutting the clit off is not the same as cutting off the glans of the penis. No implication of which is more or less important was being made, just a counter to your ill-informed remark.

Overdefensive much?

[+]Ovedya2011 -9 points-8 points-7 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

So wait. For clarification we are talking about the difference between male and female circumcision. A process, which on the one hand is typically done with a dull knife or a sharpened stone to remove the female "penis", and on the other hand is largely done under mild anesthesia with precision instuments in a sterile environment by a professional trained in surgical procedure. The former is a barbaric practice performed entirely by the superstitious, and the latter is performed by a medical practitioner. The two things being not remotely related as to physiology, and you really think that my comment was ill-informed?

[–]SaiHottari 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You're the one injecting the circumstances of the procedure when he was only remarking about the procedure itself.

Assuming both done by professionals under clinical conditions, your point is null.

Further, most circumcisions are also done with shit tools in shit conditions. The USA is the only modern country that so widely practices circumcision. Most of the third world, which all together consists of a much larger population, also still practice it. So your point is further null.

[–]Ovedya2011 -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No, actually, irrespective of the environment, the cutting off of a piece of foreskin is not remotely the same as the severing of a clitoris. The apropos comparison would be that of cutting off the head of the penis and the clitoris respectively. I don't give a shit about nerve endings in the comparison.

[–]SaiHottari 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't give a shit about nerve endings in the comparison.

Then what metric are you going by? Because if you're going by pure physiological tissue types, then cutting the breast off a woman would be no different than cutting the breast off a man.... which, it should be glaringly obvious is much more severe a problem for a woman.

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're comparing the "worst" with the "best."

Boys are also done with dull knives and stones.

We need to tell circumcised men that nobody blames them for the fact that they were circumcised, their parents did so on incorrect medical advice from criminal doctors.

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I don't blame them until they start defending it with bullshit and push it on children.

[–]TorontoIntactivist 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

That's the crux. Many American men will vehemently defend it. Some of those men will become doctors and repeat the trauma thousands of times over. Some of those traumatized children will then grow up and repeat the cycle yet again. In the U.K., Ireland and N.Z. it seemed to die out without too much issue. The United States, Canada, and to a lesser extent Australia seem to be holding out for some reason.

[–]SaiHottari 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Canada, at least, is shifting at a fair pace. My father, despite being circumcised, did not circumcise me. Most of my friends are in the same position. It's led to some hiccups; My father didn't know the first thing about how to look after a non-circumcised penis so I ended up with phimosis and frequent infections. But I eventually figured that stuff out on my own and got it all sorted out. I can now pass that experience on to my son and to my friends who need the info.

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Phimosis is the natural state of children. The foreskin separates later into puberty.

www.yourwholebaby.org/basic-intact-care/

[–]SaiHottari 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I'm 26. My phimosis only cleared up two years ago when I took action to cure it. I'm well aware of how this stuff works, as I said in the comment you are replying to.

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I was just clarifying that phimosis cannot be diagnosed in children. The foreskin is fused to the head of the penis possibly until latter puberty.

Improper care of forcibly retracting causes issues.

How did you go about clearing up yours?

[–]SaiHottari 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I did research when I noticed sex was causing the skin to tear near the opening. I then went to my GP who, when I explained the problem, prescribed steroid cream and explained a regimen of stretching exercises to make the opening in the foreskin wider to accommodate rolling over the glans. I had allowed the tearing to progress to scaring, so unfortunately it took at longer to do it, but I eventually got it wide enough I have no further problems. It's just preventative upkeep now, stretching it in the shower and applying moisturizer if it gets dry.

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Awesome that you had a doctor that didn't want to cut you right away!

[–]SaiHottari 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It helps being Canadian.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's hard too because there's a religious component and a masculinity component. Next thing you know you're considered antisemitic and have questioned someone's personal self-worth.

[–]DerangedGinger 24 points25 points26 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is an issue that needs a lot more attention. Routine circumcision is a barbaric practice. It's also too commonly proposed as a solution to problems that either aren't problems due to the person's age, or problems that should first be tackled with steroid creams. Even in those cases there are alternative procedures that don't require complete removal of the foreskin.

Circumcision is torture. Irrefutable.

Torture. Really?

[–]SilencingNarrative 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

If you had an adult man restrained and used a scalpel to remove his foreskin without anesthesia, there would be no doubt in your mind that it was torture.

Why does it cease to be torture if you do it to a helpless infant? If anything, that makes it seem even more cruel to me.

BTW, an adult man's foreskin is not fused to the glans like a male infant's would be. This requires the foreskin to be separated (peeled back or separated with a knife). Something that would be at least as painful as having your nail separated from the nailbed its fused to.

[–]Ovedya2011 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Well, uh, because it's a surgical procedure done with clean tools and mild anesthesia?

Also, we're not using the procedure to get critical information about subversive actions from foreign enemies.

[–]SaiHottari 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Well, uh, because it's a surgical procedure done with clean tools and mild anesthesia?

Sometimes. In religious settings or third world countries you can forget clean tools. As for anesthesia, again, not always. Most anesthesias can not be used on infants because their bodies cannot safely metabolize them due to undeveloped organs. The anesthesias they can use are still risky, expensive, and often difficult to get a hold of. So most infant circumcisions even in the first world are done without. Many doctors justify it by saying the infant won't remember the excruciating pain, which modern science knows is patently false.

Also, we're not using the procedure to get critical information about subversive actions from foreign enemies.

Torture doesn't need such defined purpose to be torture.

[–]Ovedya2011 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Many doctors justify it by saying the infant won't remember the excruciating pain, which modern science knows is patently false.

Really? Can you describe the very first rug burn you experienced as a child learning to walk? How about the first time you bumped your head on a table edge? I doubt you (if you're circumcised), or anyone else remembers that "excruciating pain." When I was 9-years-old I fractured my leg while playing with my dad. Funny thing: I vaguely remember the event, but I still can't feel any pain, and I definately have no mental trauma because of it. However, the fact that my dad was an asshole alcoholic? Yeah, I remember that shit.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

With that logic, all child abuse up to a certain age is acceptable. It doesn't matter, they won't remember~

Trauma effects the brain, and strapping a child down, ripping the foreskin from the head of the penis [it's fused, and later detaches naturally], then cutting off the foreskin while the baby screams bloody murder is traumatic.

We have no real idea of what issues we're causing for newborns by bringing them into the world, and then submitting them to forced cosmetic surgery immediately.

If your alcoholic father broke your leg as a baby in a drunken outrage, then you'd carry that trauma with you. Even if you don't remember the event. The brain still works as a baby, you may not be able to form exact memories, but your brain is still functioning.

[–]SaiHottari 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Actually, research suggests that infants record memories as emotions rather than sights and sounds. Your early life experiences form things like your fetishes and phobias. Further, there's strong evidence linking neonatal circumcision to detachment and social disorders. Source

I didn't see any article about what you referenced, however:

This is an opinion blog, not a set of research articles, intended for the public not scientists.

[–]SaiHottari 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Darcia Narvaez is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame.

Also, read the next sentance after the one you quoted. She has data to back up her "opinion". She even puts citations in the article!!! Her academic works are highly sourced.

I get that she also goes into her feelings on the matter and opinion, but she's also applying her scientific input. If that's not enough, her position is backed up by other psychologists and neurologists.

Read the whole thing for goodness sake.

So female circumcision should be legal in the west? The tools are clean after all and the western form of it was very mild.

[–]ItsJustASnip 22 points23 points24 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Torture. Really?

Pedophillia, fondling, masturbation, rape, penis torture, genital mutilation, oral sex, herpes infection, brain damage and death.

You can watch an infant boy being sexually fondled and masturbated here by a mohel. He's given a forced erection, so then it's easier for the child sex-abuser to mutilate his penis:

https://youtu.be/yaaw7wivUN4?t=3m12s

And here is the proof that this is all deliberate:

In the "Surgery of Ritual Circumcision", Dr. Snowman states, "When the penis of an infant is in a state of erection the operation is more easily performed and the dressing more efficiently applied."

A PDF of the book can be found here:

https://www.15square.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/ND000946.pdf

Here a mohel describes how the point of circumcision is to damage the boy's sexuality:

https://youtu.be/XN65C9tbLP0?t=10m34s

And here he is again, showing the torture and rape tools he will use:

https://youtu.be/XN65C9tbLP0?t=4s

And here's the mohel applying his penis-torture clamp and then amputating the boy's foreskin and mutilating his penis. Turn your volume up to hear those screams! LOL:

https://youtu.be/TEJrYltJzi0?t=3m18s

You can watch a full mutilation here in a child-sex-abuse hospital. The little boy will be raped by having a metal probe forced in-between his foreskin and the glans of the penis. The foreskin is adhered to the glans and birth, and does not separate until he is older. The rape-probe tears the two apart — rather like having a needle forced under your fingernail.

Then the boy will be tortured by having a clamp applied to his penis and his foreskin crushed. Then the child sex-abuser will mutilate his penis by amputating his foreskin.

https://youtu.be/W2PKdDOjooA?t=3m2s

This lucky little boy then gets a "Happy Ending" — the child sex-abuser sucks his bleeding penis, gives him herpes and then the kid gets brain damaged for life or, SPECIAL BONUS, dies.

https://youtu.be/TEJrYltJzi0?t=3m40s

http://failedmessiah.typepad.com/failed_messiahcom/2013/03/15-babies-die-every-year-in-nyc-from-metzitzah-bpeh-herpes-hospitals-cover-up-deaths-leading-yu-rabbi-claims-567.html

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2304793/Two-babies-stricken-HERPES-ritual-oral-blood-sucking-circumcision-New-York-City.html

And note that Jewish ritual sexual mutilation specifically prohibits any attempt to reduce the pain of the amputation. These guys, are hard-core Taliban/ISIS types who specifically state that the fundamental point, or "commandment" (mitzvah) of the mutilation is to cause physical pain to the infant victim:

"Most prominent acharonim rule that the mitzvah of brit milah lies in the pain it causes, and anesthetic, sedation, or ointment should generally not be used. However, it is traditionally common to feed the infant a drop of wine or other sweet liquid to soothe him."

"Eliezer Waldenberg, Yechiel Yaakov Weinberg, Shmuel Wosner, Moshe Feinstein and others agree that the child should not be sedated, although pain relieving ointment may be used under certain conditions; Shmuel Wosner particularly asserts that the act ought to be painful, as per Psalms 44:23."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brit_milah#Anesthetic

"The bodily pain caused to that member is the real purpose of circumcision."

— Moses Maimonides (1135-1204). One of the greatest Jewish sages.

http://www.cirp.org/library/cultural/maimonides/

This poll shows the vast majority of Jews say no anaesthetic should be used:

http://www.thejc.com/poll/should-a-mohel-use-anaesthetic

Even the UK Jewish Medical Association states that no anaesthetic must be used by the child-sex-abuser:

http://jewishmedicalassociationuk.org/uk-jewish-medical-issues/circumcision

So pedophillia, fondling, masturbation, rape, penis torture, genital mutilation, oral sex, herpes infection, brain damage and death.

All in the name of "religion".

Nice.

I held my son while the doctor performed the procedure. It took about a minute and the boy stopped crying in about 2 minutes.

I dunno about you, but to me "torture" lasts a lot longer.

EDIT: Yeah, yeah, I know this will get nothing but downvotes, but let me just say that I'm neither for or against this issue. My comment was more about the absurdity of this article's author, of comparing the removal of a small piece of flesh with things like thumbscrews, waterboarding, child sex slavery, and other actual forms of torture and human rights violations.

Sorry, not to offend, but I've never heard of a person suffering life-long mental and physical trauma because he was circumcised as an infant. I've never read a book written by someone about, "How I survived as a circumcision victim."

My problem here is not the issue, but how far into the absurd some people can get with any issue. It's when you take it to such extremes like, "doctors who perform these procedures should be jailed," and, "circumcision is a violen attack that has devastating and permanent psychological damage" that rational people stop taking you seriously.

[–]SilencingNarrative 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

comparing the removal of a small piece of flesh with things like thumbscrews

If someone held you down, and pulled out out of your fingernails, would you consider that torture?

What if someone took a knife and cut off one of your earlobes? Its just a small piece of flesh, right?

[–]Ovedya2011 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

That's a little needle going through your earlobe. Comparing that to having the lobe cut off is like comparing a flu shot to having the skin on your arm stripped away.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You can't inflict trauma on an infant just because they won't have a conscious memory of it and think you have done them no harm. Trauma leaves emotional scars.

[–]Ovedya2011 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

They also sell aborted fetuses for medical research. Are you anti-abortion? For the sake of your argument I hope so. Also, IIRC some cosmetics contain ground up beetles, and perfume contains sperm whale bile fluid (found in their shit basically).

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Whichever your stance is on abortion, you can't be for circumcision.

I'm mainly team human.

The topic is circumcision.

[–]Ovedya2011 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I'm talking about choice. Since your main points are about choice and "intact" human beings, you surely can't be pro-choice and anti-circumcision, since the issue is about an infant's right to choose. If every infant deserves to be "intact," shouldn't they also have the essential right to be born in the first place? Also, I would say that "intact" also includes the right to be born with any defects that could surgically be corrected, such as having a dysfunctional heart valve, or "hole in the heart" (aka. "Blue babies"). Who are we to intervene in a situation where a child is born as they are, or, "intact"?

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Foreskin is a normal part of anatomy. Those other things are not.

You really, really suck at this comparison / analogy thing.

[–]SaiHottari 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

When your son stopped crying, are you sure that was because the pain was over? Or was it because he became dissociated, mentally disconnected, to cope with the pain?

You don't need to answer. Just think about that possibility.

[–]Ovedya2011 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Infants don't possess coping mechanisms. Those are learned behaviors.

[–]SaiHottari 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Dissociation is a neurological reflex to prevent overload (to put it simply). It's the last safeguard before death by shock. Do some research on the subject. As stomach churning as it may be, it will likely be a game changer for you.

[–]Ovedya2011 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

In the billions of circumcisions performed in the last 2,000+ years, please tell me the percentage of infants that have died strictly from shock associated with the procedure, either clinically or otherwise.

I doubt that there is even a statistic that quantifies this idea.

[–]SaiHottari 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're dodging me. Dissociation exists as a failsafe. Only without such a failsafe would infants die from pain alone. So because we have it, the number of infants who die from shock during a particular procedure is obviously going to be low.

Overall, circumcision costs about 110 infant deaths per year, compared to the other leading cause of neonatal death; SIDS, which kills about 115. -Source is a Thymos study that is currently having internet domain renewal issues.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Even if the number was 1, that's too much to me for a cosmetic procedure forced on babies.

And there's more issues than death, but you are clearly willfully ignorant and hopeless to discuss this with further.

but I've never heard of a person suffering life-long mental and physical trauma because he was circumcised as an infant.

Just because you haven't hear such stories doesn't mean they do not exist. I've heard and read more than one of those. I've also read that research suggests that circumcision as an infant is indeed connected to a restructuring of the brain comparable to that of surviving severe trauma. A higher sensitivity to pain, mood disorders, attention deficit and anxiety problems have all been correlated with circumcision, as have been PTSD, anger management issues, depression and intimacy issues. And that's "just" the psychological angle.

It is, however, very hard to get any evidence to solidify that line of research because obtaining it would mean circumcising little boys as part of it. And while this has been suggested a couple of times (as far as I am aware), those projects never get off the ground because doing them would violate both Human Rights and the Hippocratic Oath.

I agree that circumcision isn't necessarily torture. With torture, I associate an intent to make suffer and that isn't a given. It's obliviousness to the harm caused that's still an issue for circumcision, though - as well as the fact that it is mutilation. And there is no way around that: A healthy, functional part of your body is irreversibly cut off.

And that means, in my book, that the issue is not one that you can be "not for or against". It's an issue of condoning something or not. By being neither for or against, you are still condoning it. Or, as the Romans used to say: Qui tacet, consentire videtur: He who stays silent is taken to agree.

So, even if I agree that circumcision isn't torture: It still is mutilation and child abuse. And I think that is why so many circumcised adults, or parents that had their own children circumcised, seem to have such a problem seeing it as what it indeed is. Because that would mean they (or their parents) abused and mutilated their own child, or at least let others abuse and mutilate it. And for someone that has a self-view of responsible and caring parent, that is no easy pill to swallow. Much easier to downplay the issue or try to get off the playing field entirely by saying "I really have no opinion in this". Sure. You do that, and thus do your part to ensure that the next generation of men still don't have basic human rights.

[–]Ovedya2011 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Thank you for a reasoned, rational response. While I'm not convinced that the undeveloped child's brain has the capacity for the same level of emotional and psychological trauma suffered by victims of serious abuse or war, I understand the concern over what may be an uneccessary surgical procedure. To take it to the level of child abuse or as a human rights violation, however, is just too extreme, IMO. As a religious right, though, at least in countries where the state cannot intervene in religious observances (I'm thinking mainly the U.S.) I don't see circumcision ever going away.

[–]Muesli_nom 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

To take it to the level of child abuse or as a human rights violation, however, is just too extreme, IMO.

But it is. One part of "Human Rights" is the right to bodily integrity, and that right is being violated. I understand you are cut. I am not. And I can tell you: If someone took that "itty bitty piece of skin" away from me, I would be out for blood. It's about as "minor" as my pinky or an eye for me. I've made the comparison to gouging out an eye somewhere else in this thread. And for me, that's not hyperbole. I am not saying that to make anyone upset that they'd circumcised their own son. I mean, unless you knew about what you were doing to him, I do not blame you - and I doubt your son would, too. I blame the doctors that should have known better. Anyway: I am saying that in an effort to make you understand that it is indeed an important part of my body, not just something comparable to a lock of hair that you can cut off without anyone caring too much about it.

As a religious right, though, at least in countries where the state cannot intervene in religious observances (I'm thinking mainly the U.S.) I don't see circumcision ever going away.

That's one major problem with that whole thing. Even in countries that have little problem in curtailing the rights of religion (thinking of my own here, Germany), the uproar from religious groups was enough for our lawmakers to turn their backs on Human Rights. Which is a sad state of affairs, and more fitting into the dark ages than into a supposedly modern and enlightened country. And that issue still is not done here, and indeed is one factor that still takes its toll on Everyjoe's trust in our political parties and system.

However, over 75% of Germans were against the law that made circumcision explicitly legal - so there's hope on the civic side of the issue: Inform the public about the procedure, and more and more people will abstain from it. Because most people are indeed good parents, and will always do what is best for their children, even if it goes against their religion. For example, there's a growing movement in Judaism that has moved away from circumcision (they do a "Brit Shalom" in its stead).

edit: Also, thank you for taking my claims on circumcision harm on trust. Still, I'd feel remiss if I didn't link at least one article about it that is properly sourced: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/moral-landscapes/201501/circumcision-s-psychological-damage

Okay, let's play a game. Let's say your parents gouge out one of your eyes before you're two weeks old. You have no memory of the event, you can still see, you cannot develop any issues on the eye that is gone, and you don't have to care at all for an eyeball you don't have. A socket is easier to clean that an intact eye, yes?

You have no memory of what it's like to have two eyes, so you see nothing wrong with having only one.

Do you maybe understand with this comparison why people who insist that circumcision isn't anything to worry about seem absolutely Stockholme'd to me?

Having your eye gouged out gives you limitations, but not having a foreskin doesn't

But it does. It makes the entire penis less sensitive (and here). It also affects Erectile Dysfunction. Have you never wondered why the US consumes about half of Pfitzer's yearly production of Viagra world-wide, but only accounts for about 5% of its population? Or why they lobbied to get Viagra "over the counter" status in Israel?

Further limitations may include the inability to masturbate or have sex without lube. Or premature ejaculation.

I'd count all of those as pretty significant limitations.

Only temporarily. As soon as he's a legal adult, he's free to drop out of school all he wants. Or do any legal drug he wants. And with illegal drugs, it was never your choice anyhow - it's the state's.

So fuck me, right? I'm a terrible parent.

No. I think you're someone who thinks of himself as a good parent, and genuinely does his best to be one, and suddenly is confronted with the fact that he did irreversible harm to his kid, and thus is now trying to justify himself something he didn't even consider to be bad at the time. I dunno about you, but I hope your son will one day be a step ahead of you, and understand how damaging circumcision is before having your grandson cut.

There's little use crying over spilled milk, but we should take care to not spill any more just by remaining ignorant about what caused the spillage.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

let me just say that I'm neither for or against this issue

Yet you did it. I'd take a proper stance sometime, because if your son ever asks you why you did it. Like I did with my father, and you answer "I don't really know why" then that's not going to be of any comfort at all.

It is a human rights violation, regardless of what mental gymnastics you put yourself through to feel better about [probably] yourself, your parents for doing it [if they did] and the fact you also did it to your child who had no choice in how their body is for the rest of their life.

There are many men that have lifelong trauma as a result of their genital mutilation. Google "Skin bridges" for one example, some men don't have enough skin left after so when they get an erection it's painful because the skin is so tight, maybe you should have did some research before forcing this on your child.

And I'm very much not happy about my penis being dry, having a scar, the fact they fucked up the peehole in the process, or that it's hard for me to feel anything with lube, and being gay lube is a necessity.

"circumcision is a violen attack that has devastating and permanent psychological damage" that rational people stop taking you seriously.

Rational people would already understand that this is true about mutilating the genitals of defenseless children. Irrational people are the ones that strive to justify continuing to mutilate children. "They don't remember" is not logical, because then that justifies doing anything to children before they retain full memories. But that trauma still affects their brain.

[–]Ovedya2011 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I doubt tha my son will ever ask my why I had him circumcised. In any case if he does, I'll tell him.

As far as botched surgical procedures are concerned, they happen across the entire spectrum. It's fucked up, but it's also just a fact of life.

It is neither logical, or reasonable, to assume that every child that has ever been circumcised suffered mental trauma. It's not even something that can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

As far as human rights, I'll go back to an argument I made yesterday. If people are against circumcision, they should also be 100% against abortion. If a child deserves to be intact, then the unborn also has that right.

Either stance on abortion, you cannot be for circumcision.

[–]Ovedya2011 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It was your argument that every child deserves to be intact. Logically you still couldn't argue that abortion is every bit as much a human rights violation.

Abortion is a different topic, and has many more variables.

[–]Ragmer 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah you've never heard of it happening! So it can't POSSIBLY be true! And I've never seen a black swan, so those can't be real! And I've never seen the curve of the earth, so it MUST be flat. Yeah. I get it.

I know I'm going to get downvoted like absolute fucking crazy for this, but I don't care. This entire article is argumentum ad passiones, otherwise known as the appeal to emotion fallacy.

The main argument boils down to "the kid doesn't like it or understands what's going on, so therefore this is morally wrong." The fatal flaw in this reasoning is that I could easily apply this argument to any kind of life-saving procedure that they sometimes perform on newborns (or even young kids, for that matter). Should doctors not be allowed to fix ruptured intestines or partially collapsed lungs on the same basis of reasoning?

And the pictures. Oh my god the pictures. It's like saying "Here look at this photo of someone having their dislocated arm shoved back into the socket! They're in so much pain! Clearly this is evil torture and wrong." Or "Look at this this photo of really gross heart surgery. Doesn't that just seem wrong?"

Using words like "torture" is intellectually dishonest. It's extremely hyperbolic and inaccurate. I'm guessing (or at least I hope) that people realize that torture is not the actual intent of the procedure. Use accurate language please.

Let's take a look at the list of supposed "symptoms of psychological damage" shall we? First of all, I and many people I know are circumcised and we have none of these problems. Can anyone honestly say that they've experienced this? Seriously, I want to know because that seems highly unusual to me. If this were real, a LOT more people would be experiencing this problems instead of literally no one ever hearing about this. Secondly, how can we really know that these issues are related to circumcision? There's so many, and they're so vague, and they could easily be caused by lots of factors. Correlation is not causation.

Now I'm about to dive into personal anecdotal evidence territory here. And before you get mad, remember that anecdotal evidence is useful to disprove an absolute statement.

I have zero problems in the department of sexual pleasure. In fact, if anything, I finish way to quickly (like a couple minutes). I've never had sex (and obviously sex feels even better) so this is something I really stress about. I worry that I'll embarrass myself really badly and not give her a chance to finish. There are times that I wish I could be less sensitive. I've talked to my male friends and they've confirmed this viewpoint.

And sorry, the facts indicate it prevents all sorts of ailments and infections.

The fatal flaw with this reasoning is that circumcision isn't anywhere near a life-saving procedure

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The point I was making is that if you want to craft an argument about this, it needs to be something other than an emotional appeal. Because the basis of the article's argument is "scary, gross, painful, confusing!"

Yes, of course it's not a life-saving procedure, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have merit. A better example might have been like, "I can easily apply this argument to any kind of surgery since all surgeries are painful, gross, and we don't know exactly what they're doing."

There is no merit to cutting healthy, functional genital tissue of infants.

[–]enigmatic360 -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. Western doctors aren't butchering infants. It's very precise and the anesthesia is applied. All I really see this as is an attempt to push an agenda while victimizing millions. Obviously it's different in the 3rd world but isn't everything?

[–]HotDealsInTexas 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

So, if doctors routinely amputated boys' pinkie fingers at birth, you'd be okay with it as long as it was done precisely and anesthesia was applied?

Also, source on anesthesia being used for circumcisions on infants? Everything I've seen said it was generally not used because "babies won't remember the pain."

[–]enigmatic360 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's a little ridiculous. Maybe your little toe would be a more apt comparison. You know something you wouldn't realize is missing until someone points out you're a torture victim.

Looks like you need an anatomy lesson:

What is the Structure & Function of The Foreskin? (Circumcision) - 19:20

DAMAGE

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Doubt the pinkie finger would be missed that much. It's not nearly as important as the thumb.

And not having foreskin drastically impairs someone's sexual function. No natural lubrication, no more initial protection [at birth it's fused to the head of the penis], no more protection from drying out or hardening glands, more friction during sex, less pleasure so you have to pound away to feel a tiny fraction of the pleasure you would with those 20k+ nerve endings intact...

Sounds impaired to me. You can still have sex [if you're lucky enough that you aren't one of the boys who die, or have completely botched circumcisions and get your dick cut off completely].

Just as you can still use your hand without a pinkie. May not be as good without it, but you'd make do.

I'm not doing shit on "your" behalf, I'm doing it on behalf of voiceless children being mutilated for life, for no reason and sure as hell against their consent. And yes, religion is no reason. Your beliefs only apply to your own body and life, not someone else's.

Stop trying to play a victim dear. Believe what you want. hack your dick off for all I care, it's yours and if you're an adult you are free to do what you want with your body. But stop trying to justify the mutilation of babies.

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, that's a good point about the anesthesia. They act like the doctors don't use it.

What I don't get is why though? What's the point of a manipulative rhetoric like this?

Getting sick? What was the diagnosis?

There is no benefits to cutting a healthy child.

Getting sick? What was the diagnosis?

Doesn't justify doing it to healthy children.

It doesn't reduce those things, even if it did, babies don't have sex.

Cut off your hand, reduce hand cancer.

Phimosis cannot be diagnosed in children.

And if you cut off the foreskin, no shit you can't get phimosis or paraphimosis, there's no foreskin. That can be treated without surgery, or non-circumcision surgery.

WebMD thinks every symptom is cancer, I don't think that's a good source of information

I have been an advocate for male DV victims and opponent of misandry since 1990s. But neither I (Jew), nor millions of religious Jews, nor 1.7 billion Muslims will tolerate an attack on our Religious Freedom.

Circumcision also greatly reduces HIV transmission.

Circumcision also greatly reduces HIV transmission.

You just keep telling yourself that. Religion is one thing, but there is no health benefit to the practice. By the way, I'm atheist.

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The freedom of religion argument makes no sense. Babies aren't religious. You can't practice your religion on other people.

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yet, you support violence against male children.

Babies aren't religious, you violate their freedom of religion.

You can't practice your religion on other people.

Cutting a piece of your dick off does not reduce HIV transmission.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well my religious beliefs don't allow anyone in the universe to mutilate genitals that do not belong to them. In yet, my religious beliefs are being infringed on!

Just as the would be slave owners, who have religious text that supports their ability to do so. And even stone women! :D

Stop infringing on my religious right to oppress you. Your beliefs begin and end with your own life and body. You can't enforce your religious beliefs on someone else, with irreversible cosmetic surgery. Well, sadly you can but you should not be allowed to. If they want to as an adult, and actually give a shit about your religion and isn't an atheist, or something else entirely, then they can do it then. btw, not all Jews practice it.

Circumcision also greatly reduces HIV transmission.

No it doesn't. Although it does increase the incidence of herpes.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Your religious freedom ends when your knife comes into contact with someone else's body.
