Please. Ever go out platonically with a group of women? The bill comes and they go silent. Seriously I've witnessed this for decades. The only women I've known to grab a check are some lesbians I've been friends with.

In my bill fold I keep a stack of $10 bills for just such an occasion. I make an announcement "My bill was X..." and I put down $10 beyond what my bill is plus a rounded up 20% tip. I make everyone know what I've paid and I get up and leave. Every fucking time they're left fucking with themselves over the bill. It's hilarious and tragic at the same time.

IMHO I think these are all too systematic to be coincidence. Consider this

At the time when men overwhelmingly were the sole breadwinners in families, it was encouraged to have joint accounts and people who didn't were frowned upon. Now women outnumber men in the college enrollments because of the hard left tendencies, brainwashing that being a man is a crime, a curriculum that rewards the female methods of learning and puts men in a gross disadvantage(though what they study is interesting to see, coddled people choose unrealistic majors that never result in a high paying job). Now that the women's participation in the workforce has increased, still not equal to men though, suddenly it is hip to have separate accounts and it is a sign of 'trust'.

Similar parallels are there in the workplace too.. first it is affirmative action to bring women to high paying jobs, for which they don't have the skill. But these industries had robust appraisal processes in place - you can get a job in Microsoft or Google but you need to perform to get a raise or the "performance bonus" which is the major part of the salary in these places, rightfully so. So, the next step is to discredit and scrap (or at least try to) these appraisal mechanisms because - "muh paygap". Now if these appraisal mechanisms fall and we reach true equality in outcome, equality of opprutinity be damned (equally damned the lives of millions of men), then I guess alimony (lifetime alimony!), Child support and other legal tragedies that only seem to befall men these days will also become unfashionable!. And it will be hip to not demand childsupport if the father is raising the child and alimony will become a real social evil which affects everyone's life.

Having one of these parasites in my home is too stressful and self flagellating. I will not suffer these vermin no matter how skewed the society is. MGTOW for life. And will never vote Democrat, even if Jesus and Buddha are running. I am aware of the Republican denial of climate change and corporate lackeyism - I will rather see the world burn bitches

Maybe that is the difference between millenials and older generations, my parents don't divvy up money, they buy what they need without trying to make sure they are spending the same amount.

I'd be interested to see how exactly this was quantified- whether by a % of income withheld or by an actual $ amount. At work so I can't delve too into the study at the moment. But in cases where the woman is the breadwinner and a % of income is withheld in separate accounts then in that case obviously the woman is going to A) withhold more and B) contribute more as opposed to both contributing a set $ amount and even more so likely in that case.

Regardless, long story short- prenup. Always.

My wife has always made more than me. We always had joint accounts.

I'm a stay at home Dad now and I won't lie, I feel guilty about buying something for myself. She has no problem with me picking up a new game, shoes or something but I just feel wrong.

I mentioned this is another comment but I know lots of other SAHDs and I haven't seen this issue at all. I have noticed it more in couples who don't have kids or plan too.

This should not be a surprise at all. And neither were the other recent slew of reports on how men do not apply for, let alone obtain, alimony (even though women make up 40% of main breadwinners among divorcing couples, men make up 3% of recipients).

But I would like to encourage everyone not to turn this into the battle of the sexes - look, women are stingier than men! Gotcha! Rather, we should add our own analysis to how gender roles bring about this state of affairs, what the consequences are, and what, if anything, we could or should do about it.

Both male and female gender roles stand in the way. Women have throughout evolution learned to value sexually features that reassure them that they will have protection and provision when they are at their most vulnerable (child birth and rearing). This instinct is superfluous nowadays, but that does not mean it is easy for a woman simply to ignore the fact that she is doing the provisioning. Similarly, men might find it emasculating to have to rely on their wives and hesitate to insist on their rights the way a housewife would. All house husbands I know have stories about not only self doubt, but snide comments from others and at times passive aggression from their wives - often in the shape of high expectations on what the house should look like and meals taste. The wives often turn into a parody of that 1950's working husband that plumps down in his armchair asking for his slippers. And the wives, in turn, tell me about battling with creeping feelings of shame and reluctance to admit too publicly that their husband is not working.

As I understand it, an unplanned life event that makes the wife the main breadwinner is strongly correlated with divorce rates. And yet although this kind of tension has to be resolved for anything resembling equality of opportunities and expectations, we somehow do not talk about it. Instead, we all seem stuck in some notion that staying at home is of less value and somehow oppressive. That is not only logically perverse, but counterproductive and progress-inhibiting.

Who, apart from Germans, even knows the name of Merkel's husband (btw a prominent academic in his own right)? Yet we all know Macron's and Cameron's wives well. That should tell us something.
