It happened to my best friend. Did not sign up, didn't get to do student loans for college. Had to pay out-of-pocket and use private loans.
He's also banned for life to work for the Fed government or its contractors.
And since we're engineers, it's not a trivial ban. Happily, he made it and has a great job now, but it was a rough ride.

I know a lot of people that make bank working for Uncle Sam as engineers. With lots of time off and a great schedule also. And if you work for a contractor, you can make even more.

The "contractors make more" is an almost universal myth in current government contractors outside of engineers, unfortunately, even in other STEM fields. The REAL benefit of being a contractor is your company can fire you any day of the week and not give you two weeks. Governments love contractors because they provide nothing but yearly lump contracts pay to your employer. I get 3 days of holiday a year (New Year's Day, Christmas Day, Thanksgiving day) I don't accumulate PTO and make 17/ an hour. I am a college grad and currently working on my CyberSec Masters. The well-paid contractors have all moved to the private industry and are being paid far better than we are now lol. You will go into a government office now and you will see contractors who are young af and make nothing and work all the time, and older people in merit positions because they can't be fired and are making double the amount.
TLDR; Don't go into a contract position with the government unless you really need a job

I agree, however, a government contract for an order for a product is completely different from a contract role where you are just given to the government from an employment company. Working for a private company for the government is probably where people get the idea that contractors make more, this is the only case I find where there is any benefit, but this is because the company cares about employees far more than a staffing agency where maximizing profits means paying your employees for as little as possible. Also most jobs working with the government require a security clearance. You need a sponsor for one generally and I can say without a shadow of a doubt a staffing agency would not dream of sponsoring you.
So yes I agree and should have been more specific a "contractor" and a "contract worker" are two separate roles and there is a huge difference between the two. But the government won't tell you that and neither will an employer most of the time.

You are ineligible for federal financial aid unless you sign up.
As an alternative method of encouraging or coercing registration, Solomon Amendment laws were passed requiring that in order to receive financial aid, federal grants and loans, certain government benefits, eligibility for most federal employment, and (if the person is an immigrant) eligibility for citizenship, a young man had to be registered (or had to have been registered, if they are over 26 but were required to register between 18 and 26) with the Selective Service. Those who were required to register, but failed to do so before they turned 26, are no longer allowed to register, and thus may be permanently barred from federal jobs and other benefits, unless they can show to the Selective Service that their failure was not knowing and willful. There is a procedure to provide an "information letter" to the Selective Service for those in these situations, for example recent citizens who entered the US after their 26th birthday. The federal law requiring Selective Service registration as a condition of federal financial aid for higher education was overridden in December 2020, and the questions about Selective Service registration status on the FAFSA form will be eliminated by July 1, 2023.

Currently the US Military is less than 1% of the population, during the Vietnam War it was just under 2%, during the Korean War it was over 2% and for WWII it was close to 9%. If it kicks off big there will be a significant expansion.

I never said I was offended.
What I said was that you lack integrity. Willingly getting the advantages of a situation while knowing you will try to avoid the responsibilities that comes with it. That makes you a hypocrite, even if powerful people are hypocrites, you shouldn't want to lower yourself to them, as they have more power and will make you pay the price of those responsibilities, even if they can't be responsible themselves.
You should try to advocate for a system that is both fair and doesn't require to partake in it knowing you won't respect it.

If there is a war, and it may be, politicians want to have all available weapons, because wars happen. In 1900 people said it would be the century without wars. 14 years later the great war started.
Feminist always say "get rid of the damn thing" because they know it will never go away. Not in the next 100 years, at least. And it's a way to avoid talking about "if we have the draft, let's make it for both men and women". If we are talking about ending it, anyway, why should we double in the meantime?
