She's a therapist who has no idea about childrens' developmental stages. I used to play guns and swords and violence all the time as a child. As an adult I have been in 0 fights, have never hit another person in anger and have only fired a gun once or twice. Anecdotal for sure, but I had a normal boy's childhood and guess what? I'm not a violent monster today because my parents taught me how to respect and act toward other people.

More dedicate people than you Vered have tried to raise boys to be girls. And they have all failed.

Despite what your degree in therapy told you there are biological differences between boys and girls.

Imagine an experiment where we tried to force girls to act like boys, be more aggressive, solitary, and competitive, acted concerned when they wanted to be girls, and generally tried to force them in to a role that they were clearly rejecting. That'd be horrible, borderline child abuse right?

I didn't see anything referring to girls on the part of the author, so the title seems like projection. It is disappointing that typically male centric hobbies and toys are demonized though.

She's a therapist and like most social workers , psychologists , academics , and gender studies majors , she has no clue whatsoever what any of the crap she's an "expert" in actually looks like in real life.

I mean , these are people who bought every last word about how gender was a social construct. All that time buried in a book and being lectured to about how the world would be such a better place if only women were in charge has had the usual effect of convincing themselves that any of it was actually true in any way.

Why is anybody surprised ?

I remember watching "Heavy Metal" as a kid, and thinking about how the city that called upon the woman flying the pterodactyl deserved what came their way.

As a kid, I saw their puny civilization as one that couldn't hold up to the barbarians at the gate, and instinctively knew that it was their duty to have protected themselves. My opinion now is more nuanced, but the need for defense has remained unchanged.

I can tell you, this understanding came from a deep place. That kind of deep knowing is ingrained. No one taught it to me. You are born into it. It's not learned. It is a piece of my core.

Maybe it's an exclusively male insight.. maybe it's more specific to my family tree. Maybe it's like being gay. You're just born that way regardless of gender. I really can't say.

But I do know that an attempt to stifle that knowledge would result in a rejection of the teacher, and the lesson. There are few ultimate "truths" known to mankind, and the need for proper defense is one of them. Those born with it can't let it go anymore than a human's desire for love, inclusion, or understanding.

The idea that we have outgrown the need for people with this ingrained understanding is laughably naive. It's self flattery at the price of self deception.

Truly a losing combination.

The trend of treating boys like girls is astounding to me from a social impact perspective.

Truly, it is pulling the beams from the dam to build new houses below it. Don't they know what the dam holds back?

There is no such thing as a universally tolerant society. Only a society that tolerates different things. A tolerant society does not cease being bigoted. It is bigoted in different ways.

America today tolerates different things. It tolerates little boys dressing up as little girls at school, but not little boys pointing pencils and making machine gun noises on the playground.

The little boy whose mother dressed him up in girlish clothes once used to be a figure of contempt while the little boy pretending to be a marine was the future of the nation. In the cases of most young boys, the elements of power and security go hand in hand. Its no surprise that during their development they have 'battles' and 'fights' with their toys or using their imagination. Its coded in us to see ourselves as protectors, as ones who use power to ensure our survival and the defeat of those who seek to harm us.

The lady who wrote this article needs to get a grip. She's just like those parents who refuse to let their sons play with dolls for fear they might turn out gay.

Seriously, why can't people understand that playing a game does not make you a violent monster?

My girlfriend has two brothers, 12 and 13, who love violent shooting video games, they play paintball regularly, and own about a hundred different types of nerf guns that they have wars with their friends. Yet these boys are some of the most mild-mannered kids I've ever seen. They hate real violence and i've only ever seen them hit each other.

Parents need to understand that children are not that stupid. Despite what they may think, a child is capable of independent thought and doesn't blindly believe and follow everything they see as real.

Eh, I'm inclined to think that culture's role is somewhat underplayed by some people here (to be fair, the majority of feminists overestimate culture's role so I guess you could say 'necessary corrective'), but really, how can one be horrified at this? Its gender-typical play.

You raise a child in a world which socially considers him worthless until he proves himself through earning "real manhood" by protecting innocent women/children and teaches him that physical violence is the road to earning social worth. I mean, the kid has watched Star Wars so he's hardly not been raised in a cultural vaccum.

Combine this with biological tendencies and you REALLY shouldn't be surprised.

Not only that, but the mother should remember that children aren't as silly as is often presumed - dinosaurs fighting makes a lot more logical sense than dinosaurs getting along and making an agreement to share a living space!
