Long story short, I have a friend that's married with kids. The husband, who I don't know, apparently suffered brain damage in a plane crash or something and now the marriage is basically over. I say basically because they are still married.
Today my friend informed me that she's moving across the country to be with another man, and, I presume, taking her kids with her.
I don't know that she's even talked to her husband or family about this, she's just going to pack up and move.
I want to contact the father, who by all accounts is great with the kids, and let him know that he can file a motion with the courts to have to children returned to their home state.
I would love some feedback on this.
Edit: The brain damage has effected his intelligence, yes, but from first hand accounts other than the wife, he is capable of taking care of the kids and is a good father.

I'm curious, and not trying to catch you out at all, but your statement sounds very black v. white, right v. wrong, etc.
Hypothetically, what if your partner was in a horrible accident and rendered significantly impacted mentally to the point they truly aren't the person you fell in love with and made vows to? What if they were impaired to the point they were in a permanent Terri Shiavo-esq coma?
In a less extreme situation, what if your partner developed a significant mental illness but refused to treat it despite your intervention?
I don't know...there are so many situations that I can see that leaving your partner is not ethically wrong.
I do agree with you that marriage vows are taken so lightly these days that it's bordering on the absurd. I place marriage on the bottom of my to-do list for similar reasons.

I disagree with you here. If the person I fell in love with and married was to somehow end up in a Terri Shiavo-esq state, then, eventually, after my grieving was fully realized (which could be years) , I would move on. I would still try to keep them in my life because they were (once) significant, but I would try to find love again.
To enslave myself to a partner who no longer knows I exist is masochism. I would be damning myself to misery and I deserve better than to die alone like that.
To run with the Terri Shiavo theme, if you were faced with an identical situation, would you "pull the plug" so to speak? I gather that you would be a "pro-life" person in this situation (correct me if I'm wrong).
