Double Standard with work

I'm a full time student studying 20 hours a week and people still expect me to work - especially my girlfriend's family, it's all they ever talk about!

EDIT: For clarification, I'm in class 20 hours per week, and generally have about 20 hours per week of homework and studying in preparation for exams and clinical practice.

The very first thing I thought when reading your girlfriend's mom's question was "You've had what ?... 20 years ? Get cracking !" Of course , I probably would have said it too which is why I will probably remain single for the rest of my life . Ha ha

My girlfriend's mom is the same way. I told her we're not married, and her daughter isn't disabled. So I will only need to be making enough money to support myself, and I'm living quite comfortably. I never understood that, do you think your daughter is that stupid that she can't support herself?

That seems like normal parent behavior...especially if she's asian, I can attest to my sisters getting the same treatment "when you get real job for fancy degree, huh!?"

It seems to be a generational way of thinking that is slowly (too slowly) being phased out of societal expectations. My husband only works part time and my family and his family look down on him for it. I feel that he contributes to our marriage/household in ways that are not just financial and have no problem with him not being the major breadwinner in our marriage.

My dad and grandma give me shit about getting a job all the time. My dad has worked at a dead-end job with no benefits for his entire working life (while getting a degree in business management with a minor in accounting, which he doesn't use at all), starting on a part time basis in junior or senior year of high school. He hasn't had a raise in my lifetime (I'm 20), and he makes somewhere around $35k before taxes. My grandma expects that it will be as simple as walking in any store and filling in an application (based on her experience getting a part time job at around 16 at a record store in the late 1940s, her sole working experience). Between school class time and homework, I spend about 60 hours a week either in a lecture or doing homework. Its not like the job market is great around here, especially for someone with no real resume worthy experience trying to get a first job. It took my friend nine months of applying to finally get a part time job at El Pollo Loco.

TL;DR a lot of older people don't get that you can't always just walk in somewhere and be given a job for just filling out an application, especially if they haven't been involved in the job market for decades

Were you living with your folks/were they paying for your school?

This might just be a case of "go into adult life" and they may likely treat all their children that way.
