As if Title IX wasn't toxic enough in the athletic field, now it will limit academic fields as well. Not only academic fields, but also the amount of scientists we produce. I guess science is exactly 50/50 on the gender scale.

So that means that they're going to put a cap on the number of women who get accepted to programs predominately dominated by females right? Cause that would only be right... Right?

For anyone interested, I did some "napkin math" after reading another article talking about applying Title IX to the hard sciences, math and engineering.

Currently men make up ~40% of the whole university graduates. Supposing that 30% of graduates are in these hard sciences which this would apply to (i think this is a generous estimate). Under current numbers women are represented 10-20% in these fields, and men 80-90%.

Using that data, we can see that if this was turned into a quota system, where it was more like 50 / 50, we would see men's higher education rates plummet to ~32.5%, and the relative number of graduating women increase to 67.5% (assuming the number of women/men enrolled in the other degree programs remained the same).

This would be truly tragic, because it would result in not only fewer opportunities for men, but it would also likely result in a required reworking of the math and science curriculum, and a likely drop in the overall math / science graduation rates.

When men are completely pushed out of universities, can we start saying that the system is gynocentric and not get laughed at?

(Edit - noticed a % was for women not men, math didn't change, not that I showed my work or anything.)

Okay, so I can't find a single source for these claims that isn't a blog. And I can't even find a lot of blogs claiming this. I can't even confirm the quote from Obama.

Can anyone else provide me with an objective source supporting these claims?

EDIT: Alright, I at least found the Newweek op-ed. I have no idea why it didn't come up the first time I googled.

Women make up the majority of students in Universities (60-70%); how is it that we're going to limit male enrollment in the few areas where they are still a majority without limiting female enrollment in underrepresented male fields? Do they want women to be an even greater majority in higher-education?

Liberal war on science? Really? We want to get political here, when every conservative government in North America is pushing and succeeding at cutting science education and research across the board?

I agree that limiting any form of science enrollment is counter productive, but to label this as a liberal war on science is really, really pathetic.

This is certainly dumb and sexist, but science in America is limited by available funding, not by the number of students educated in science by a longshot.

Calling this a liberal war on science is stupid. If you're worried about science, the amount of grant support (both overall, and in terms of support for basic science in particular) available to actual scientists should be your number one concern. And the left usually is much, much better than the right about this sort of thing.

Let's stop pretending liberals have any representation or power in the US. Obama is not a liberal. There are few if any liberals in congress. Kucinich, Feingold, Weiner, Kennedy, and Frank (and more) are all gone.
