I definitely do not agree with the cocaine issue. And if we are only talking about cases of 16 year old with 40 year olds with cocaine involved, I'll definitely agree that is bad all around. It is the 16/40 cases without cocaine.

I don't think a 16 year old has the state of mind to weigh the consequences of entering a relationship with a 40 year old appropriately

Many adults don't have what it takes to measure such relationships (especially people who are bi-polar and who enter into destructive relationships). Should we ban these people as well?

Now, I'll admit that I am biased here because I went to a specialty high school which served as an academic magnet, so the average 16 year old I knew when I was 16 was a definite cut above the rest. But what I do remember is that most of the 16 year olds I knew in high school were more mature than most of the 18-20 year olds I met at college.

If at all possible, I would say we should have a system based on maturity and not age, but no such system has been purposed that has any chance of working well (I've actually did a study in college on the ability to mentally disabled adults to consent to sex, and there were actual systems purposed to make sure a mentally disabled adult was able to consent to sex. But there are two major problems with applying those systems enlarge. First, it would be too expensive. Second, most of their standards are so low any 16 year old could pass them. Hell, I know some of my younger preteen cousins who would be able to pass those standards. As a complete side note, while I was studying the issue of mentally disabled adults and sex, I was in contact with a woman who has spent years working with such individuals and she says that the sexual abuse is rampart among the people, even in cases where only the highest functioning mentally disabled adults are allowed to consent to sex.)

I'm pretty sure that in your area age of consent is 16, but upgraded to 18 if you're in a position of authority over the minor.

While I know this is the case in some states, I don't believe it is the case where I live. Might need to go double check one day.

That's how the law is generally written, because otherwise young people would be getting taken advantage of by teachers, cops, etc even more than they already are.

Even 18 year olds get taken advantage of plenty. Exactly how do we determine that enough people are getting taken advantage of to make some act illegal?

And people are also peeved because there is an enormous double standard when it comes to the gender of the abuser.

I fully agree we need to do away with double standards due to gender.

And sex + pot + alcohol is great as long as you take it easy on the booze, because booze and weed = spins.

Meh, I consider it unsafe just because people are less likely to have safe sex under those circumstances. Now, if you happen to be a partner you have trusted for a long time and are okay with the notion of an accidental pregnancy, then the issue isn't as big, but normally I say have a bit of caution.

You can only be tried as an adult at 16 in extremely severe cases where letting someone go free in a year or two would be a travesty of justice. For most crimes, you're going to be in the juvenile system.

It seems for any major crime it is par for the course to try them as an adult. For things like petty theft, not so much.

I hear you on the drivers licenses - I think they're a compromise because getting around without a car in America is extremely difficult. Most European nations don't let people under 18 drive.

If they aren't mature enough to handle it, doesn't matter how difficult it will be for them to get around, they should not be putting other people in danger. Personally speaking, I almost never drove alone until I was out of high school.

On the other hand, if they are mature enough to drive, then they are mature enough to do these other things. Especially the no alcohol til 21 issue.

Hahah, no but seriously I'm not saying their isn't some truth to the fact that he may have been groomed I'm saying that most of what men want at 16 years old is drugs, sex, and booze. I was a 16 year old boy once and minus the drugs (at the time) booze and sex were the only thing on my mind. And I have a thing for older women, and some of my teachers were pretty hot. I'm saying that girls are apt to do the same thing at times. Maybe not all girls, but some, are crazy. Some girls like older men as well, and like to party. And some girls just have a hidden agenda and want to get people fired, whether it be for bad grades, unrequited affection or whatever. I'm not saying there isn't any validity to what you're saying. I'm merely stating that he's 16, young, horny, and probably looking to party. Girls can be the same way. What you're doing by saying "So if a male teacher does this to a female student, using drugs and altering her state of mind, enticing her [grooming for you dumbasses out there,] is she "knowing what she's getting herself into?" is playing a double standard. So why don't you rethink about the way the world works, in reality, instead of acting like an ass and arguing with someone on the internet.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that not all girls are as innocent as the media tends to make them out to be. And they ruin it for those who are truly victims in a rape case. The same goes for males in this situation. If the teenager being "raped" in this situation was confronted about the incident by his parents, principal, or other teachers he may have lied and said that he did it under pressure, or was chided into doing it. I use quotations because in many of these situations it's hard to tell whether or not the person is actually a victim. I don't agree with what happened, but it was for the court to decide what the punishment was, whether or not this kid was actually raped, and whether or not the woman should be punished accordingly. She got off easy, I agree, she placated the double standard of court favoritism towards women and got off easy. I'm merely saying that not every case of so-called rape is actually rape. Am I making myself more clear on this situation as to my beliefs? I agree that the teenager may or may have not been raped. But the decision must have been based on some evidence. And yes men do get treated unfairly in similar cases, but it's only recently that women are being found in these situations because in the past people tended to look the other way, or look away in disbelief.

1) Yes. If you're 16 you should have some grasp of the law. You are old enough to drive but not old enough to know sex laws about minors?

2) You're twisting words, naturally. This is a statement about society saying that these actions are perfectly fine. The fact that this boy was cool with everything is a testament to the worsening of society and its morality.

3) Precisely. The woman knowingly broke the law and acted in an illegal manner. What shocked me was that the boy was not the one to come forward, but the husband who found out. I am not defending the woman, I am addressing the fact that the boy at 16 found nothing wrong with this behavior and made no attempts to break the cycle or seek help.

I realize this is /r/MensRights and anything that even looks remotely like I might be defending this woman gets me downvoted to oblivion, but people need to realize that this problem is multi-pronged and a symptom of a sickness in society. It is her fault for engaging in this activity, but, in a perfect society, the boy would have turned her down knowing these activities to be morally wrong and illegal. We give children a lot of responsibility then never properly prepare them for the realworld.

Sex has more serious consequences for boys then for girls: The double standard should be inverted!

In this modern age boys need more protection then girls (due to slower maturation, existing laws and scientific progress)

adolescent girls mature faster then boys, physically, intellectually and psychologically. Legal age for marriage was, and still is much lower for girls then for boys in most countries in the world (Marriagable Age | Wikipedia, Elisabethan marriage customs, Historical Age of Marriage). This has also to do with gender roles with the more mature man the provider and protector.

Boys, on the other hand are totally powerless once a woman got pregnant. Boys/men have absolutely no chance to avoid the serious trauma of decades of enforced ruinous child support and alimony duty with no automatic visitation rights to even see the child or influencing how the money is spent.

No rights but payment duties enforced by police and prison, not much different from slavery.
