most of the time I don't even think they mean it, they just say it to put the person they're arguing with on the defensive to prove they aren't. best thing I can think of is to agree (even though it isn't true) and run with it but it's a double edged sword. either they'll realize it doesn't work and have to backpedal and actually argue your point, or they'll say "see I told you" and declare victory.
