I think it would do a lot for men. Women would have to bring more to the table than just sex. Not saying all women do that but the old holding out to punish a man or get your way would not longer apply. Plus it would do a lot for women not having to deal with the law and pimps. Their body they should be able to to what they want with it.

A few countries have legalized prostitution, and most people there seem to agree that it is positive for everyone. Here's a collection of observations, make what you want of it.

1) Reduces exploitation and foreign prostitutes. If there is a legal and an illegal way, men are more likely to chose the legal one, therefore reducing trafficking and crime.

2) Sex workers have to submit to health checks, which can be good but also constraining. Add to this the possibility of income tax and some service tax, and you see how legalized prostitution will be more expensive and more constraining.

3) Less arrests, of both men and women. You'll notice that feminists always say the prostitutes should never be held criminally responsible, and that only men should face penalties. This happens in some places, and is to my knowledge the only service whose offer is legal but purchase is not.

4) Erosion of family values. I know, it makes me sound like a priest, but in countries where prostitution is legal, marriage rates are at lows, divorce rates at highs and single parenthood very common. Correlation or something more?

Who cares? It should be legalized regardless because it's consensual adults and it's their bodies (and when I say legalized I don't mean that stupid Swedish model that arrests johns but not prostitutes).

There would be no change. It would however help both men and women by keeping them out of the courts.

I don't think committed relationships would become obsolete(though marriage has always been "obsolete" as far as I'm concerned), as there would still be plenty of men and women who do care for each other and would want to pursue committed relationships with one another(regardless of whether or not children are involved). Prostitution might even be used as a tool to strengthen relationships(as an easily accessible means for sexual experimentation and/or knowledge between couples).

Both genders would have a lot to gain from legalizing prostitution but I do think men, especially with the way things are now, would especially benefit from this. When it comes to sex and dating, women truly are privileged(i.e. not only is it commonly and abundantly available to them, significantly more so than men, but women are also compensated, pampered and relieved of responsibility for enjoying their own sexuality and have grown to expect these things from men) and women are the ones "holding out on sex" with men, whether for emotional, financial or social gain/manipulation, as well. Legalizing prostitution(or any other alternatives for intimacy/sex) would be a pretty significant step towards restoring that balance between genders(perhaps even to the point where a man's attention or sexuality might be considered of equal value to a womans) or dissolve a lot of the leverage that women use against men. This would also help a lot of men, who would otherwise have little to no opportunities to do so because they are men, fulfill a basic human need.

That's not to say that this wouldn't also help women as well, women could and would also benefit from those same services if it was available to them as well. Possibly gaining an appreciation for men and sex, as well as new sense of personal responsibility in their sex lives, might also help them grow in the long term(with themselves and with men).

Prostitutes/escorts themselves might also benefit from it, both in providing better working conditions(safer environments, safer means, etc), better means of support(calling proper authorities for abusive customers/theft wouldn't be an issue) and a greater possible clientele could help them in countless different ways. The only draw back would be that legalizing prostitution could create a more competitive environment where escorts might not be able to get away with charging as much as they would otherwise.

None of these situations exist in Nevada. Granted, street walking and outside-of-brothel-prostitution is illegal, but on the whole, it's like everywhere else, except old dirty miners can have sex too.
