A sign at my local shopping mall... the second line seems very unnecessary [self repost from /r/WTF]

I actually nearly got in to a fist fight with another man over this. I have two small daughters and they pee more than a man with prostate problems. So we head to the restroom at the food court and see that the mens room is closed for cleaning. So when I turn around I see that there is a family restroom. I think to myself "Great! This was made for some one in my situation." As I go to open the door, a man standing next to the entrance says "Hey, there's women in there." I give him a nod, completely dismiss what he is saying, and enter the restroom. When I enter, I see said women lounging around, doing their makeup, and chatting. The man then enters the restroom and begins to scream at me saying that he warned me that there were women in here. I reply to him that this is a family restroom, not just a woman's lounge, and take my girls in to the bathroom stall. The man exits the restroom, but I can hear him continuing to scream about me being in here while women are present. My girls handle their business, wash their hands, and we exit the restroom. On cue the man confronts me as we exit the restroom, informing me of how lucky I am that I am with my children, otherwise he would be kicking my ass. While I am thinking about how ironic his statement is, due to the fact that had I not had my children I wouldn't have been in the family restroom ( or women's restroom the sequel, depending on your perspective), this man had apparently drawn the attention of mall security. Security tries to calm the man down to no avail. They eventually have to restrain the man and carry him away. All the while screaming "There was women in there, there was women in there!!!"

I was asked to leave a family area because I was making some mothers nervous.

My wife was nursing our infant son, and she specifically wanted me in there with her, although I can't remember the reason.

That was over 10 years ago, so it's nothing new.

But if that second line wasn't there, dads may not know they're welcome. If a woman starts yelling about how there is a man in the lounge...he can point to the sign and shut her up.

Actually I am glad that the sign is there. I don't take it as condescending but rather that the mall is trying to say "We aren't stupid and won't call security/the police if we see a man and his children in the lounge together." It also probably prevents a lot of otherwise bitchy helicopter mothers from freaking out and running to bother the first official looking person they see.

While I see your point, I appreciate that the mall is making a positive effort to be inclusive here. Until such a time when fathers are not second-class parents, it is helpful to specifically include them.

Good sign, some women need reminding that dad's also look after children. Then again seeing the look on women's faces as I walk into the room and see their boobs never gets boring. Always uncomfortable though. But yh never boring.
