Aren't you all tired of the obsession to put women in stem

Once again, it is a case of feminists "missing" an obvious reason for why men are over-represented in those fields, even if you were to agree with their blank slate lunacy. The fact is that while women's role have been liberated and any woman wishing to go in any kind of male dominated/ traditional role will receive an overwhelming amount of support and praise for it.

On the other hands, men haven't been liberated from their traditional gender roles. We still need to be protectors and providers. And any man trying to go into a female dominated/traditional role will get derided, mocked, shamed, and so on. And so, necessarily, men all congregate to the same areas and dominate those roles. If you want more equal proportions, one obvious thing to do would be to liberate men's roles. The more role they are spread across, the lower the proportion of them can be in any one given field. And given all that has already been done to push women into STEM, it will require far more effort getting the same increase in the proportion of women by increasing their numbers.

I remember going to a Big data and AI conference and during the keynote one speaker who talked about "diversity and inclusion".

According to her, the problem was white males. Because they were the overwhelming majority of AI and Big data engineers. Problem is, the room in front of her, probably ~3,000 people, all working in Big Data and AI were a majority of Indians and Asian.

She has a representative sample in front of her of Big Data and AI workers, it is absolutely obvious that the majority is not white male.... but she concludes that it's all the white male fault.

Yeah, I’m largely tired of it. I’d support a more neutral “women are free to go into STEM if they want to” approach but painting STEM as inherently misogynistic and disallowing the idea of any possibility that men might be naturally more inclined to gravitate towards STEM fields (something which there is lots of biological and social evidence towards) is grating to me.

I think subconsciously a lot of women are somewhat afraid of more manual jobs and want nice, comfortable - and most importantly, safe - office jobs. STEM has jobs like that in droves, it tends to pay quite well, and those roles aren't considered subordinate to men, like receptionist/secretary or other admin roles often are.

So here's where the push really comes from: Feminism wants women to close the earnings gap (not the wage gap, which is a myth, but the earnings gap, which is real) by taking on more highly paying roles, but women don't usually want the higher-paying roles that also come with high personal risk to safety (construction work, mining, security etc). So feminism has recognised it needs to push women into STEM, where they can be highly paid and still sit in a cosy office or lab, because it simply won't succeed in pushing women onto construction sites or into mines. STEM is one of the few arenas where they can have both high pay and low risk to personal safety.

It's exhausting, because it's not true equality. As with most things pushed by feminism, it's all high-reward:low-risk for women while simultaneously failing to address the high-risk:low-reward roles that men have to take on because women usually refuse to.

Just a bit of history for you all. I graduated in mech eng as a man in 86. Women got lots of special treats already back then. Scholarships, access to the dean, special welcoming induction events, femsoc with that being their own society though I don't know what that meant.

They also got premier access to the job placement as well as eventual jobs. IBM, Dow Chemicals, Exxon... Girls first.

So nothing new.

In countries that are supposedly less equal, like India and China, women are actually significantly more likely to go into STEM and other typically male-dominated fields than they are in more developed nations like much of Europe, Japan, and North America. Even in less developed nations, wealthy women are significantly less likely to take jobs in otherwise male-dominated work. So it seems that having the means to live well changes women's priorities. There is nothing wrong with that, so long as we acknowledge that not all women are the same and some do want to enter typically male-dominated fields. As long as that door is left open, nobody is doing anything wrong.

The goal is for mass male unemployment and underemployment.

Think about it, if you're going to continue to have female dominated fields such as mental health, social work, human resources, education, nursing, so on and so forth and they also want to have gender parody in male dominated fields then the likely implications will be mass male unemployment and or underemployment.

supposed discrimination against women in tech/stem IS ACTUALLY THE OPPOSITE,

Are there any tech companies with more women than men employees? My partner works in tech and woman are still the minority in every workplace he has been in.

Having said that, I don't personally agree with quotas. Equality of opportunity, not outcome. Otherwise, we just have the government assigning us to our careers, which no one wants.
