This post doesn't come with any data or article. It was inspired by a pretty depressed sounding young man on another sub who said the following:

And as I sit after a long day of work to game with a few of my similar-lifed boys, we see powerful female characters being absolutely disgusting with men, whilst our male characters have to save the women.

I'm curious what people think about videogames today, in terms of the way they portray men.

Would you agree with this characterisation? Do you think the way games portray men is healthy? Better/worse than other media?

Has there been recent changes in games? And what would you like to see instead? What are some good / bad examples?

If your opinion is that complaining about media is a waste of time and something only feminists do, that's fine. I do think that media influences a lot.

Personally, I'm from a generation when gaming wasn't as mainstream. I enjoyed point-and-click adventures in the 90s and basically walked away from most popular games once the FPS was invented and the original Doom came out. Suddenly the whole industry seemed to be about marketing and violence. I never got into online gaming, but played a few RTSs and JRPGs over the years. I still play retro-styled games - currently enjoying Eastward.

The thing is, I've seen how important games are for a lot of boys. I suspect that they have replaced a lot of other media when it comes to exposing boys to storytelling and characters.

One kid in my class messed up the hard disk on his PS4 and his entire life in Skyrim was gone just like that. It seemed like it was the end of the world for him.

EDIT: Appreciate the discussion so far. There's a number of comments about how women are portrayed. What about how men are? I realise that a game protagonist sometimes feels like a blank canvas since the player is controlling their actions.
