We should absolutely be posting more feminist analysis + writing in this sub. I’m part of a few other radfem subs and Brady, Steinem, bell hooks, MacKinnon, Dworkin, Greer, Dines, Wolf et al should be posted more often imo. I miss second wave feminism.

Oh I thought this was hilarious when I read this in school and sad when I read this now. This should be required reading for relationship therapy, for assessing what you really want out of a partner and why.

this essay is also exactly why alimony or extra tax credit is needed for stay at home parents for the sheer amount of unpaid labor that goes into it.

This is an FDS oldie but goodie. I always enjoy seeing it because I know it will be the first time that many new and young FDSers see it and absorb the weight of it.

I was this Wife. I was a good Wife until I decided I was more than only someone's Wife. I can't regret everything, as I learned innumerable life skills: being a Wife is truly a difficult, laborious sink-or-swim experience that only the tough can survive and thrive in. Now I do it all -- have a career AND adult successfully. I can't say the same for my (X)Husband.

Funny you bring this up, my English Comp class just had me read Kate Chopin's short story "The Story of An Hour." For those who aren't familiar, it's about a woman who recently learned her husband died in an accident and reacts with joy. Not even out of malice toward her husband but because she is finally "free." Keep in mind this took place in the 19th century, and a woman's life was very different from today. It ends with the husband returning home, having not been near the accident at all, and the woman dies from a heart attack.

This is why women are the prize. Because we allow men to be successful with what we bring to a marriage and a man does not provide this to us in return. Marriage is skewed heavily to favor men so we should be exceptionally careful before entering into marriage with a man.

It's interesting that she's essentially describing the life of an upper middle class man. They would be the ones doing graduate studies while their wife works to support them with the expectation that after his graduation he'll make enough money for her to be a housewife. It sounds like a good deal, but it also sounds like that's just a fraction of men.

It also makes me think we have to be less efficient today than before as individual. Back then one individual (the upper middle-class man) was really two people working for one person, with his wife working as his assistant. Then women were like "I can do it myself", but women had to do without an assistant. And now men have to do it alone as well.

The part about sex though that remains completely unchanged? Man wants enthusiastic sex any time he feels like it, woman is attentive to his pleasure, and then she must not ask for it when he doesn't feel like having sex.
