Just that. In my pickme days I was overly agreeable. I would go through great lengths to prove myself to people who dismissed me. I would rack my brain coming up with ways to prove that I wasn’t the easy bimbo they thought I was. I would pursue and try to convince the men that rejected me that I was not the woman they thought I was. (Side note, never pursue) I was, at most times, placed into a box, a category. Rarely recognized as a multidimensional individual. It wasn’t just men that did this, either. Other women who I respected and self proclaimed feminists. I feel that many people put women into categories with strict rules and a script to follow. That we aren’t individuals with unique experiences and ideas ,but dolls that come in a few varieties. I stopped proving myself to these people. I only invest my mental energy in people who see my worth. I no longer demand respect, I go where it is already given. I no longer get into long debates to defend my views to less informed, ill meaning people who will dismiss me, anyway. I only discuss my views to equally informed well meaning people that can provide meaningful feedback. I only value people who value me. Respect is a two-way street.
