There was a man about 15 years older than me (I’m 29) I met at a singles Meetup back in December. We got to talking and I found out he works for a competitor of the company I used to work for managing stocks. I told him I was looking to explore other opportunities for a few different reasons and he encouraged me to keep looking and gave me some information about the culture when he was there.
It was a group-type of event so it was social in the sense that sometimes we talked in groups, and sometimes 1:1. It was obvious he was attracted to me as I could tell, but he wasn’t crossing the line.
Towards the end of the night, it was a group of us (2 women, 2 men) discussing RSU’s and he broke down that process. When we he finished talking (when we were all about to leave), he wrote his phone number down and gave it to each of us if we had any questions about it. He pulled me aside and said he’d really like to talk to me more. So, the next morning I sent him a text with my name.
He responded saying he really enjoyed our conversation and he’s happy to go over equity compensation and the RSU process if I’d like to. I said OK. Dude finds me on LinkedIn a couple days later and reiterates what he said and that I can use his network if I’d like or if I needed an introduction. I say yes, and he said he’d set something up after the holidays.
Today he reached out again via LinkedIn saying to let him know the best way to connect, gave me his personal email and phone number again then reiterated he’d love to help me.
I responded and gave him my email address and said we should start there. There’s a few things I’d love to get his help on.
So is this appropriate from an FDS stance? What’s up with the weird dance? Kind of a tricky situation. I’m thinking if nothing happens, best move is to follow up via email and try to take it from there because I do want to get the ball rolling. He works for a very well known, good company with some very good connections based on what I saw on LinkedIn so if he truly does have an in, I’d gladly explore that opportunity without being a fan girl. Any thoughts? Comments?
Just a side note: Most men in business are in fact dogs just FYI. I didn’t get that vibe from him. Yet. Usually if men have wanted to help me in business, I let them lead on that and then decide if this is helpful or if they’re trying to be creepy. Always comes out at some point. They will go out of their way if they’re that interested.
