First, if this really made you cry then you need to get a handle on your emotions.

Woman in sex work has been normalized. You can disagree with it and not engage with it but you aren't living in the real world if you think that sex work isn't a huge industry in 2022.

Use this as an opportunity to learn better emotional regulation rather than freaking out that some dude is envious of the ease with which women's bodies can make money.

Modern day Feminism has said that women should not be judged for their choices of labor and wage earnings.

A very large majority of men have with open arms or begrudgingly accepted this as fact. The room mate sounds like he has open armed accepted this.

Is it possible OP, that you were feeling upset with society in general; that your eyes had been opened to some unpleasant truths about human nature lately, and encountering another person with another perspective that further tarnished your world view just set you off? It is hard sometimes when you care deeply about the well being of society and I hope you are able to hold on that compassion. However, you have to let go of how you want to see the world and see it for what it is, if you are going to make any productive change. I agree that using ones intellect is an admirable goal, but you don't seem to realize that a lot of manual labor is skilled labor and that takes training in both intellectual and physical realms.

Men are not women, and many men have difficulty understanding women and women's lives. This man, is just thinking "Wow, if I could make money doing sex-type work, that would be so EASY compared to what I do now. I could make tons of money, more than I do currently!". He cannot look at it from a woman's point of view and cannot understand why a woman does not see sex-type work in the same way that he sees sex-type work. Sometimes, if you point out to a man, that he does in fact have the same opportunity to earn with sex-type work, if he targets male "customers/clients", he may be able to get a little taste of how many women feel.

If this made you cry, you need to seek guidance on how to properly manage your emotions. Across the world people have different opinions on controversial topics and you will always run into people with different opinions and values than yours. You don't have to engage with them, but you have to be able to ignore them and not let your feelings get so hurt.

I agree manual labor contributes to our society. Manual labor is how packages get sorted in warehouse to make sure we all receive our Amazon 2 day deliveries and goods get produced. Is the same true of ballet? It is an art form that takes years to perfect, but how does it contribute? It fulfills the lives of those who perform and direct it, and brings joy to those who consume it, but it is at the end of the day a nonessential service. The same argument could be made about stripping, it brings joy (however temporarily) to those who consume and fulfills those who perform and direct it. Just because you don't see it as a valid art form that brings you joy, does not mean others see it that way.

I don't really believe in contributing to society, and as someone who's strongly anti-capitalist, I'd say that most careers are demeaning. It's just a matter of degree.

The guy getting paid $15/hr damaging their body at a warehouse is just as exploited as the woman stripping. We just don't care as much about less visceral forms of exploitation, especially if they're happening to men.

The idea that some labor is 'productive' and some isn't seems like mostly nonsense to me, but again, I don't believe in contributing to society. Maybe I'd feel differently if this wasn't a capitalist society.

If a girl sells something that was considered her sacred temple then letting a thousands of people into said temple it is no longer sacred.
