Angel and spike were always LVM.... look how they treated poor "crazy" Drusilla. Loved seeing Buffy kick their asses on the regular, tho.

When I watched Buffy the first time I loved her with Spike. Yes I know it was an awfully toxic relationship, I just loved their chemistry and somehow I never liked Angel lol Of course now looking back I know that all the relationships were a cluster fuck.

Spike redeemed himself (what he did was awful, and he's nowhere near being HV, but I feel like that was kind of the point of his character). The other men in the show did not. Joss W. is horrible, but he did give us really dynamic female characters (a few were definitely a miss).

I always found it weird that JW decided to make the main protagonist FIFTEEN (she was younger when Angel first saw her and became attracted to her) when she and Angel fell in "love". Though it isn't much better, Spike and Buffy started their VERY toxic "relationship" when Buffy was an adult. The only male character that was close to being HV was Giles.

I will say this; vampires were SUPPOSED to be LV. They had no souls (I won't get into Angel because I hated him more than Spike tbh). They're EVIL. I really do think the love pairings were meant to be toxic, and we weren't supposed to root for them. I remember watching as a young teenager and being like, "All these people are a mess lol".

I love Buffy with all my heart. I'm glad she ended up alone (I don't consider the comics Canon).

The logical part of me wholeheartedly agrees with you. Of course, all of the relationships Buffy was in (in her teens to early twenties) were horrible and toxic. But the fan girl in me who literally grew up on Buffy will always love these characters...All in all I’m team Buffy. I also loveeee the women on this show. For all the bad Joss Whedon’s done I still think he writes women much better than most male directors/screenwriters. And I think Giles is a good example of a HVM!

I remember watching Buffy as a kid and I thought all the romance was a waste of time and distracting from the real plot.

Angel - At first I liked him because be looked like the mysterious, caring-deep-down guy, but my impression of him changed because he was always sulking in the corners and being a "woe is me" character. I didn't get why the scenes between Buffy and him had to be so somber all the time.

Spike - For most of the seasons I thought he was a clown who pretended to love her so he could trick her, just as he had done before. It's funny that I didn't even feel disgust for him, just that he was an irrelevant clown. I didn't always watch it when it was on TV so I unknowingly skipped the episode where he tried to rape her. After he gets a soul I started warming up to his character more but I didn't believe that he had totally changed until he sacrificed himself and died lol. In the last season he's the one that stands up for her too when her friends turn on her and he stopped acting like a clown. I'd say that he got close to being HV at the end but there wasn't enough screen-time of it to really tell.

I love Angel, but only in his spin-off show. He is TERRIBLE, both as a love interest and just as a character (so boring, yet so offensive. How?) in Buffy itself. Joss doesn’t know how to write romance, because he doesn’t know how to see women as people.
