So I was very close with one girl in college and I mean inseparable, but she had a really bad reputation for cheating, homewrecking and being promiscuous. When I left for an exchange semester I was told that all of my friends did not hang out with her, she was asked to leave a party, they all follow me on social media but not her, and the only people who showed up to her birthday were her roommates and my ex and his friends who I asked to go. Some of her closest friends have fallen out with her and complain about her to me, and it was difficult for me to convince 2 of my friends to live with her (and me). We will be together again this upcoming year, living together and remaining friends.
I’m worried how it will affect me socially, as I was always invited to things even in front of her while she was ignored, and people would only speak to her to ask how I was.
Because our identities are so intertwined, I worry that others will assume that I act like her. When they get to know me, this is not the case, and most boys I have dated did not like her. I usually maintain good relationships with them and their friends and they make jokes about how I should take back their friend and be in a relationship, but with her they just make jokes about her cheating or call her easy.
I know that rumours travel fast in college, and next year I want to focus on my work, I have a position in a society, and will be moving forward in my career. I want to work out, read, see friends, but not party like I did when I was younger. And I want to get married, but I feel that the impression of me men will get from being her best friend will taint me.
Any tips on refining your reputation/self presentation and distancing yourself from your friend’s antics?

It’s not a small college but I think the community is pretty insular in terms of I think I know 90% of the people that I Should know. If I go to a party I usually know the majority or have a link to them, obviously there are those I don’t know but it’s hierarchical in a sense. I guess it’s more for the people who know me by name or from a photo and will judge based upon that before speaking to me. I know her side of the story in the majority of cases and have witnessed some of her behaviour. Some of it is unfounded, but some of it I can see why dislike for her has stemmed. I think it’s unfair, and I think she should act how she pleases. She’s a very dedicated and intelligent person and I like her as a friend in other aspects. I suppose it’s more anxiety about the rumour mill, rather than me personally being against how she conducts herself.

Thank you for this! I would say she is still continuing her behaviour now we are apart which worries me. I had the same experience as you, although they felt like my own choices as soon as I had separation from her I realised how much my personal outlook differed and how I am more traditional and changed my behaviour accordingly.

Cheating is abuse.
Homewreckers are complicit in the abuse of the betrayed spouse.
Your friend has low morals. Would you be friends with someone who verbally abuses their significant other? Would you be friends with someone who physically abuses their significant other? I’m not sure why cheating and homewrecking is given such a pass.
Your friend has shitty morals. She knowingly chooses to hurt other people.
I would sit her down and tell her, look, the nonsense has to stop. I value long-term relationships. I value commitment. I value honesty. And right now you’re the sort of person who goes around hurting other people and if that’s who you want to be I can’t hang out with you anymore.
Point blank. Women need to hold each other accountable. None of this quiet passive-aggressive “I’m just going to slowly stop talking to you” BS.
If you really want to improve your reputation, be honest. Be kind. Tell her, “Look, I can see you have some emotional issues that are causing you to hurt others. I’m willing to support you if you want to start acting right but I’m not gonna support you when you’re out here cheating on people and sleeping with guys who are already in relationships.”
Don’t be the sort of person who avoids these uncomfortable conversations for selfish purposes. We don’t want homewreckers and cheaters in this world. We should intervene in their lives and try to steer them on the right path. And if she gets mad and cuts you off, oh well, her loss.
