The impression I get is that most people are highly risk-averse. However, I'm not really risk-averse. In general, my lifestyle is very risk taking especially if the potential reward is high. I don't play the lottery because I know the math is engineered to take people's money and have people lose the overwhelming majority of the time. That's not what I mean. I do take lots of risks otherwise though in daily life as a sort of lifestyle. I weigh the drawbacks with the potential rewards and have a somewhat high risk tolerance. I definitely do not live within conventional lines and cultural norms; I'm willing to live unconventionally if the payoffs are plausibly great. And more than that, I'm unwilling to live conventionally if conventional is clearly limiting and I think it is most of the time.

For example, the 'bamboo ceiling' in the US is a situation where Asian-Americans tend to be high earners statistically, but never the highest earners. And actually I'm not sure there are any billionaire Asian-Americans at all. There's this idea of risk aversion limiting Asian-Americans professionally. I will admit though, being risk-averse also minimizes negative outcomes. So being very risk adverse basically means you won't ever really personally suffer unless limiting yourself to live within the lines harms your mental health.

Anyway, studies show women are more risk adverse especially financially. So it would seem to me that a risk taking man would be generally disliked. Though I'm not talking about finances specifically, I am talking generally but that also includes finance. For example, back in ~ 2013 or 2014 I learned about cryptocurrencies and was willing to buy multiple graphics cards and cheap computer parts and burn electricity to mine coins clearly before anyone accepted them as valuable. And it was a simple and easy decision for me to make. And it turns out it was the right decision as the coins jumped in value a ton over the following 7 years or so. At that time in 2013 people looked at me like I was an idiot for mining cryptocurrencies. 🤷🏻‍♂️ This is what I mean.

Not every decision is right. But my willingness to take risks is fairly high, so I don't mind being wrong. I just update my beliefs with new information and keep going. I feel comfortable taking risks. Living conventionally makes me feel smothered and stressed out.
