She happened to be pregnant when she got laid off. That's all. Not because, or anything like that. Of course she makes that the focal point and it gets a damn article. Lay offs suck. It's horrible for everyone impacted, not just her because she happened to be pregnant when it hit.

Human societies revolve around seeing children turn into adults, really just that simple and not a bad thing when you see it in that light. That doesn't mean that they do not abuse it as much as they can and that ain't something I agree with.

Similar thing I’ve encountered. This place where I’m working, I sometimes take interviews when we hire new people. A woman who’s 5 months pregnant comes in for an interview. Great interview but I had to ask. She tells me she’s not pregnant and that’s just her body shape. Two months later she’s requesting maternity leave. Immediately had her fired for lying because I knew she was pregnant and I knew her pregnancy didn’t just start.

I’ve seen pregnant women enough times to be able to tell the difference between a woman who’s pregnant and a woman who’s got belly fat. Her husband wants to talk to me and my boss about it and tries to scare us and my workplace by saying he wouldn’t mind taking it to court. Told him to go ahead because she’s the one in the wrong for lying about something and it would just do more harm than good for him and his wife who he should consider since she’s with child. Ended up backing away and taking back his tough guy attitude.

If living under a patriarchy means men holding doors open for women, giving their seats to women, making sure women and children are rescued first, paying alimony to divorcees, single men in cities making less than single women in cities, and men dropping out of higher education at an alarming rate, I'd like to sign up to be a woman living under that patriarchy.

One of my coworkers is pregnant right now and she is insufferable with the expectations and demands she has of others. Worse yet, my male coworkers have shamed me for not giving her special treatment. I really want to tell them, "I'm sorry, but you're not special just because you let some guy nut inside of you." But of course I'd like to keep my job.

This is not a gender issue at all, why make it one?

Both men and women get used and abused by big companies. If you get pregnant, or your house burns down, or if your child dies, companies will consider you a liability and "let you go"

It's a big problem, but I don't think it has anything to do with female entitlement.

As a woman, i have to agree with OP. I don’t have kids and the logic behind maternity leave baffles me. Why does her choice to have a child have to cost the company money? She gets paid leave and she can come back to her job. As someone who didn’t coat the company money, do I get a bonus for that? Nope. I can’t believe this was newsworthy.

I’m trying to figure out where she say’s that she shouldn’t have been fired because she was pregnant. The google employee in question said nothing of the sort, and has a right to be upset she lost her job right before she goes through such a life changing experience, not to mention expensive.

As for favor towards women that are pregnant, I’m fairly confident that it should be a thing and it should be for their husbands. We should do our best to ensure that people who are going to have children are as equipped as best as they can be. Nothing entitled about wanting the best start you can have for your child.

Yep. Life throws curve balls at everyone. I know many people who picked up their lives, moved for a job, bought a house and then was laid off. These things happen. Unfortunately, in life we all take risks, and many times it doesn't pay off. We get up and move on. Layoffs suck for all that are involved. I was given 30-day severance with 3 small kids and a stay at home wife, my sister gave me a couple thousand dollars to get through, made a little bit on the side helping people.
