I’m so tired of reading these stories about postpartum psychosis leading to familicide. When this same shit shows up in the news again and again, there’s clearly a problem at a deeper level than any one individual’s actions. This is symptomatic of not only a severely ill person but also an ill society. Doctors knew she was a danger to herself and her family—the family was specifically instructed that she was not to be left unsupervised. (Edit: I misread one of the lines in the article about this; the family was never told to keep her under supervision. It seems like they certainly should have been told so, though, since someone taking thirteen psychiatric medications is clearly in a bad spot.) We’ve seen this a few times now, where the husband thinks his wife is doing well and steps out of the house despite doctor advice (edit: it wasn’t against medical advice in this case, though it has been in a number of others) only to come back to what I suppose is just about the worst thing anyone could experience.

She was identified as a risk but remained at home under family supervision, which the family was apparently not equipped for. The husband here says that on the day in question, his wife was unusually happy, making him believe she was recovering enough to be safe around the children. A medical professional might have instead identified that same happiness as a red flag; it’s common for those who die by suicide to be unusually happy before the end because they’ve already released the burden of living. This is ultimately a failure of the medical system, which despite identifying the risk left this family without the resources necessary to deal with her condition. The medication cocktail she was on (the article says she was taking thirteen psychiatric drugs for this problem) was clearly wreaking havoc on her brain. It should have never been on her husband to babysit her in the first place when she needed sustained medical attention.

She’s obviously to blame; don’t get me wrong here. But if we don’t change things at the institutional level to effectively deal with these all-too-common situations, it’s just going to keep happening, and at that point I wonder if we don’t all share some responsibility for failing these children.

It's hard to know until more evidence comes out. From what I've read she was a loving wife & mother & they were a happy family until her last baby. Post partum depression/psychosis is no joke. It's well establish how crazy some women get with the chemical in balance in the brain after having a baby. She was under the mental health team & her husband was doing everything he could by all accounts. I can't imagine the trauma he must of suffered coming back to that. My heart breaks for him. His whole family wiped out in half hour. I feel they were let down by the midwives & drs, she clearly should of been sectioned.

Anyone ever notice how when it's a woman who kills her kids, it's "sad" and "a tragedy," and they feel "so bad" for the father, but when it's a man who kills his kids, he's "a monster" and we need to talk about the overreaching problem of male family annihilators?

When a woman does something bad, she's a victim of circumstance and it's always a sad story.

When a man does something bad, he's pure evil.

The sad thing is it's mostly women who enable other women with this too. There's even a post on TwoX right now about a woman who admits she's been yelling at and abusing her husband, and everyone is telling her it's not her fault and it's because she has iSsUeS.

Before anyone decides to misinterpret this post, I think both should be considered terrible people. Every person in human history who ever did anything bad had circumstances. Those circumstances only count when it's a woman.

Was prescribed one tablet of Pregabalin that induced suicidal nightmares I had never experienced before: it's difficult to believe it is possible to want to kill yourself in a dream, when you would never consider that in life, yet it happened.

I'm willing to believe it is possible for chemical imbalances to override what would be normal behaviour in other circumstances.

However, such things need to be treated until such time as a person is no longer a threat to anyone else and prevented from being in a triggering situation again.

I believe the perpetrator’s psyche meds played the significant part in this case. I’m a supporter of this community but can’t get behind the public (male or otherwise) service message here that women can get away with literal murder as the main takeaway of these horrifying events. We’d all be much better served in my opinion to keep a close eye on family and friends who are taking powerful medications, especially SSRI’s, and exhibiting uncharacteristic behavior.

Postpartum depression ain’t no joke. I don’t know if that explains this woman’s behavior, but it is a serious problem and can lead to tragedies like this. I can’t tell you any details about how I personally know this but I can suggest that you read about it. Doctors often miss the seriousness of it with tragic results. Again, in this case, I don’t know because I can only go by what the news says. However, it’s very real and possible.

Mental health is never an excuse for someone’s actions, however, this goes to show the severe mental health crisis happening in America right now. It’s such a shame that there’s not enough quality help for the people struggling with their mental health. This crisis took away a fathers 3 kids, I can’t even begin to fathom how heart wrenching it is to experience that. This woman obviously premeditated the whole thing, but nobody who is actually sane would plan a murder out like that in cold blood. Postpartum psychosis is dangerous, it’s not uncommon to hear different tones of hallucinations. Some experience hearing god, or the devil, some hear people they know. You lose touch with reality slowly, and start believing your own delusions.

I think I see everyone as a victim in this situation, a person who’s mental health deteriorated to the point they didn’t have remorse anymore, a father who lost all his children, and the children who lost their futures. Maybe I’m the odd one here, but I think that it’s sad thinking that if we had better and more effective ways to treat mental health they could’ve just been a happy family. This doesn’t just apply to postpartum psychosis, but to any condition which steals the remorse and empathy in a person enough to commit such an unfathomable crime. School shooters is another issue that brings this topic back up all the time, while people are focused on gun rights nobody is focusing on the mental health crisis.
