How do people feel about Women only gyms?

I only dislike the double-standard.

Of course, the guy who is suing is suing because his gym offers special women-only hours, but no equivalent men-only hours. He agrees that this would be okay if women were charged more, since they get their own special time, or if men were charged less because they do not. I completely agree.

I have no problem with women-only spaces.

What I do have a problem with is why men-only spaces are apparently an affront to society/misogynistic/sexist/etc.

I'm okay with gender segregation in some gyms, as long as there is equal facilitation of each gender - i.e. a women's room and a men's room.

Anything less than complete parity is discriminatory. That's all there is to it.

Women fought hard to break down the doors to gain admittance to traditional male enclaves, and then they turned right around and insisted they need "women only spaces" -- gyms, hotel floors, buses, taxis, train cars . . . . The only interest these things advance is that of commerce. It does no favors for our daughters to teach them they are so weak or "different" that they need to be protected from men. In this country, the law forbids such segregation for places of public accommodation, and the law ought to be enforced.

When my daughter was young I wanted to get a gym membership. I checked out GoodLife. All of the gyms with daycare facilities, in Toronto, were women only. I called them up to ask why and was told that there wasn't any demand for gyms with child care facilities that allow men. I told them that they can start their demand tally now.

A year later I called back, still nothing. Also, none of the gyms at the groery stores in my city allowed men, which was also a pain.

Now, about 10 years later, it looks like that has changed, the child care part anyway.

If women-only gyms are paid for only by women, that's fine. When they try to get men to pay for women-only hours with the dues of male members, that's where it goes wrong.

I actually think women only gyms are fine, as long as there is an equal alternative for men.

Imagine if a restaurant only had a womens bathroom.

There was a story a while back about some kid who wanted to use the gym, but every time he went it was womens only. They literally said that even though it was the only convenient time he could go (due to school hours), he couldn't because he was a guy.

The problem with the discussion of the validity of single gender spaces is often its being determined more by WHO the space is for rather than WHAT is going on in those spaces.

Honestly I have no problem with women only gyms. I'd even find if there were no male only gyms...as long as there is room to actually push for them. But as we have seen ttime and time again there is a hypocritical stance that women only spaces need to be protected and men only spaces must bbe destroyed. That stance and the hypocrisy that supports it is tbe problem.

If it means fewer women in the gym I go to I am happy. The fact that I live in a society where discrimination against women is taboo but discrimination against men is OK makes me unhappy.

I don't think there should be entirely Women only gyms unless there is another gym within walking distance. Women's only classes and maybe even time periods like on a Thursday or something.

Either businesses and organizations are allowed to discriminate, or they are not. I will accept it either way, but I will not accept a double standard of either. So. If we're going to have women's only whatever, then we are going to have to accept men's only whatever as well. It's. Really. Fucking. Simple.

I'm the administrator of one of Australia's biggest gyms. We are a unisex brans with a large focus of being inclusive. From my experience women only gyms do not offer the results people are looking for, starting with the simple stuff like weight loss people come in to me all the time asking why it doesn't work there. Getting along in somebody's training you might have strength and conditioning, rehab , prehab or other specialized work. These terms and what they intale sre virtually unheard of in womens gyms. Why? Well you've got an apologists culture thats all about making people feel comfortable and not ever addressing issues on a serious level. Their recruitment guidelines stink of cronie-ism where the value of a potential employee is based on their ability to talk about this or that.

Basically these places wouldn't be in operation where it not for people like me running my business and generating market interest and awareness. Its a shame these scum bags get the overflow and not some sincere people out there.

The only problem I have with them aside from the double standard is I worry about it discouraging people from exercising and let us be honest we have an obesity epidemic in America. It could possibly make it easier for people to exercise via feeling less judged by the other sex but it also keeps people out who want to use that gym because it is in a good location but can not due to gender.

At the gym I go they have a room on the first floor near the woman's locker room. For the longest time I thought it was. The new owners of the gym took the frosting off the glass door so you can see into it as you are going up to the first floor. Last week a woman was in there doing lunges about 4 feet from the door scoffing and glaring anytime she made eye contact with a man, I was confused...

It is against the law to deny services offered to the general public to a specific group based on race or sex or religion in most places (increasingly also on the basis of sexuality). If the gym is a private club it would be legal. If it advertises generally to the public, illegal, unless it also has a male-only equivalent service.

My gym has a womens only room at the gym with cardio, weights, machines, etc. It almost never gets used. Then the gym holds all their stupid zumba classes and crap like that IN THE BASKETBALL COURT. They have a million classes so basically people who want to play basketball have to come after like 10pm at night if they want to play. They could just get rid of the womens room that never gets used and hold classes in there, but nope that would make too much sense.

I'm inclined to believe that the real reason woman only hours for gyms would be appealing to most women is not because they would actually want to use the gym without men around, but actually for the complete opposite reason. Since there would be less time for men to use the gym, it guarantees that more of them would be around at certain hours.
