As someone who has played much sports, there is nothing remotely sexual about this gesture in this context. It means effectively, "good job". Nothing more, nothing less.

Another point to team "females will never understand banter". Better never to try and joke or be friendly with a feminist guys, you'll be jailed for sexual harrassment because you looked at her funny or used a disrespectful tone of voice.

The best way to distinguish if this is a gender related issue is to ask oneself if he had been in court for a probation violation stemming from a charge of headbutting his brother (also domestic abuse) would a) the judge have had the same reactions and b) would we be making the same arguments for and against it?

Personally, I think the judge is allowing emotion to rule over logic and also shows a bit of entitled attitude. The judge has a position of authority over others and feels that others should recognize this. When not shown this recognition the judge feels that it is appropriate to use force to garner the desired recognition of authority.

This isn't a gender issue. It's a judge who happens to be female being a douchebag because she got her feelings hurt. There is no law that says anyone must respect the judge. They must comply but not respect.

This has nothing to do with the person being either black or male. It has to do with the fact that he is in court slapping his lawyers ass. In a courtroom; the judge is god; and you act appropriately.

He did not show his 'contrition' for his crime by slapping his lawyers ass in front of the judge; who was offering a plea-deal much less than what the law mandated.

It's innapropriate behavior for a court of law. Idc if slapping ass is an Athlete thing or not, its not appropriate to slap the ass of your attorney. As for the judge being anti-male. I don't think thats the case. Seems to be Johnson was making a mockery of the court bc his scummy lawyer got him. Apparently the judge diddnt think it was so funny. Its good to see one these athletes who think themselves invincible get more than a slap on the rist for disrespecting the legal system.

I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but athlete culture or not, slapping someone's ass is not at all appropriate in a courtroom.

While I agree that it looks harmless, an unwelcomed slap on the ass is indeed sexual harassment. If the lawyer was female, no one would laugh, and it wouldn't even be second-guessed that this guy deserved what he got. This subreddit often proclaims that genders shouldn't matter, and that assault is assault. To see people dismissing this as though it were the judge that was in the wrong here is very disappointing.

I for one, applaud this judge for showing a "no nonsense" approach to this kind of behaviour. It wouldn't be appropriate if a Man slapped his Female lawyer's ass. It wouldn't be appropriate if a Woman slapped his Male lawyer's ass. Therefore, it's not appropriate just because they were two Men.
