Has anybody read the Handmaid’s Tale? I’d love to discuss it from a rpw perspective

I haven't, I watched the first and second series though.

I wouldn't have thought it pro-RPW in anyway. The wives are expected to tolerate the husbands having sex with another woman whilst she watches, which is hardly meeting RP women's wishes for commitment and fidelity. The handmaids are not allowed to fall in love and create their own committed families, nor are all the various servants.

I dont see that there's anything positive for RP women in it? No woman, regardless of her position, is truly happy here, at least by the series.

If anything, the whole plotline is a warning about letting too much religion and male societal control cause the mass punishment and subjugation of women and some men. I dont think RP women want a Gilead much more than BP women.

Does the book differ?

It's a feminist dystopia that Ive never found particularly compelling.

The premise for the set up of Gilead is that there are severe reproductive issues. They address it by giving women who have been proven fertile to the ruling elite to have babies, taking away their other children and adopting them out in the process.

In talking about pregnancy as women's biological destiny, the commander is viewing it more from a male perspective. Women don't want to spread their seed and go to work to provide while someone else raises the kid (as a rule). Women want to have children not pregnancies. Being a broodmare is not desirable.

That said, I imagine that there is a possible incentive structure that could encourage young women to be egg donor/surrogates before moving on to form their own family. Women do those things separately now so there is no reason to think that changes in a time of low fertility.

And in the days of IVF the concept of having sex while the wife looks on is a highly antiquated one. Even in the 80s this seemed to be thrown in to make the whole senario as dystopian as possible.

I’ve read somewhere that much of the book was based different historical and world events and one analogue for the time was the Iranian revolution.

The religious crackdown that occurred was very different to the way educated women in the city lived.

I read it many years ago. I may take another look at it. I do remember that it comes from the perspective that right-wing men are abusive to women, which is the opposite of reality, but I didn't have enough experience with men to know that at the time. Any physical or verbal abuse that I've received from men was from "liberals." Any insistence that I must do a man's work even at the detriment of my health or risk my safety for the sake of male feelings was from male "feminists" and other lefties. Bit of a rant, but you get my point.

I think the left wing are leaning closer to these sorts of behaviors these days than the right wing if you ask me. Have you seen how they supply babies for adoption in Norway and the UK? Look at some of the things that Bill Gates and the UN are doing. It's exactly like the handmaid's tale.
