My ex was very into Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro. He always hated that I spoke against both and told him to seek out better voices to mimic.

I've been listening to Jordan Peterson because I'm interested in analysing why guys are so enthralled by him. What does he tell young men to do? Get up, make their bed, become a productive member of society. Basic shit that is obvious as fuck that their mothers have probably already been telling them to do for years. However coming from Peterson, the men in the comments are like 'This advice helped cure my depression! Jordan Peterson understands me!' Etc. Etc.

I think in the consciousness of these men, Peterson represents a father figure that they desperately need. I was watching a video where he has a conversation with some young men and the common theme is they come from broken homes where the father was absent. This was one video so it could be classed as anecdotal evidence but I was struck by how many comments under the video mentioned crying in catharsis at the video or feeling like Peterson understood them. The other common theme were comments like 'feminists will never understand this, they think men are privileged.'

It was really interesting to see, that to these men - that is, men who grew up without a father figure (or with a toxic father in their lives), men who are unable to express their emotions, men who also seem to be socio-economically disadvantaged - Peterson, and the cult around him, offers a 'safe space' culture where you can admit to crying, or processing your emotions or you can admit to being angry and frustrated at the world and blaming the liberals or feminists while Peterson offers intelligent sounding opinions about why, in contrast to men, women have apparently never been oppressed. Yes he literally said that in his video. It's always easier to blame the 'other' (be people of a different colour to you, or different sexuality to you, or insert 'X' bogeyman here) than to really disentangle your trauma through an intersectional discussion about why the capitalist patriarchy might be making you miserable.

These men are suffering from the capitalist patriarchy and they don't see it. They can't express their emotions, they have absent father figures, they don't feel like they have a meaning or purpose in life, they don't have jobs that pay them enough money. They see women outperforming men at university and go 'AHA! See women aren't oppressed at all!' when the reality is so much more complex than that and one example of a disadvantaged class succeeding after decades of oppression is not evidence that women have it good in life, or that they have it easier. If anything, this highlights their complete lack of understanding of the female experience and a complete ignorance to the struggles their mothers have had to endure in order to raise them. Their mothers' burnout from shouldering the responsibility of two parents probably also means that they haven't been able to invest as much in their sons as they would have liked (not blaming mums here, it's a hard job).

Back to how the patriarchy has failed them and how they fail to see it: They have been taught to 'man up' by the patriarchy; they have been taught not to cry by the patriarchy; their fathers have deserted their families because the patriarchy glamourises men who can sleep with as many women as possible; they don't know how to be responsible for themselves because their absent fathers were never taught about, or never deigned to take on the emotional labour of a household in the first place, and they never learned by example from him because he was absent; they don't make enough money because, well, we're all going through late stage capitalism where the middle classes have been eroded and jobs are getting automated. When you're struggling with this sort of trauma and depression, having people say 'You've got it easy, what do men have to complain about??' is obviously triggering to them. They're too angry, or frustrated, or depressed to have the emotional bandwidth or inclination to consider that other people may also be suffering, and that perhaps we live in a system that is failing people across the socio-economic, gender or sexuality spectrum.

Peterson has some interesting ideas in his talks, even some things I've enjoyed learning about. If you watch his videos I'm sure you'll find them interesting, as I did. But too often he conflates his own personal opinion as academic gospel and worse than that, his opinions are taken as academic gospel by his cult-like following. I think a healthy dose of skepticism is always needed when it comes to famous scientific figures, especially as, despite being the man who offers thousands of men solutions to escape depression, he himself had to check into rehab for depression and drug abuse.

A man who assaulted me has linked Jordan Peterson before and paid for backstage passes at a Ben Shapiro event, and I find that to be so embarrassing for him that it’s finally helping me to not be afraid of him anymore after all these years.
